Terry said it....he'll do anything to help Penn State be successful.Im kind of shocked by this really. I didn't think he could stay at this point.

This may be like BoB keeping Larry Johnson for a while....I am wondering if this is Campbell's call or something imposed/requested by PSU? I would hope/think Campbell is fully on board with it given the circumstances and perhaps he was convinced that keeping Terry will help to retain players for next year. Seems pretty early to have a definitive staff decision.
It doesn't hurt that our secondary has generally been pretty solid under Smith (assuming that will be his main responsibility)
Good analysis, I'm wondering if this years version was really just a 3-3 with a bigger LB that they called a DE. I havent seen them play or watched any film to determine that but maybe that was the case. They had great size on their line, 265, 325, 305, 285, so maybe it was a case of just getting the best guys on the field. They only managed 13 sacks on the year which bothers me a bit but they held Iowa to 3.4 yd/rush and 214 total yards while getting 3 of those sacks. They held BYU to 3.7/carry but gave up a couple long pass plays. Ultimately they only lost to BYU because they threw 3 picks and lost a fumble, out played them/played even for most of the game.Yeah, good point.
He based out of a 3-3 but he wasn't against attaching to a 4-3. I remember a game I studied a LONG time ago (bowl game against Memphis) where Memphis spent a lot of time in 2 tight early to try to fold them in 3-3. After a play or two they adjusted to what amounted to a standard 4-4 over (and went true 3-4 with the Safety attached in the fit at times).
Since then, and maybe he has changed/evolved much more, but I have always seen them as a "whatever we need to do to combat what the other team does well we will do" system.
Agree. That is either spin or an even bigger example of incompetence of Kraft. On second thought, maybe it did happenAnd no one bothered to follow up to get the right info on how the get a hold of him then? That makes no sense.
There was a write up of his DC's choice of big bodied DE versus the twitched up athletes PSU recruits and was largely because recruiting them to Ames was a high bar. I am curious what kind of scheme they run with better athletes.Good analysis, I'm wondering if this years version was really just a 3-3 with a bigger LB that they called a DE. Either way, it seems like the difference between him and Knowles is your last sentences in the first paragraph, he quickly changed after seeing what the other team was doing. JK did not do that this year.
Or maybe Kraft thought Campbell would be interested since he turned down a bunch of other jobs in the past….just trying to give Kraft some kind of benefit of the doubt.Agree. That is either spin or an even bigger example of incompetence of Kraft. On second thought, maybe it did happen
The less the better. Not going to convince anyone he isn’t a putz who got lucky,……so I’m expecting him to talk for 20 minutesHow about, “I’d like to introduce the next Coach for Penn State Football, Matt Campbell.”
Take it for what it's worth, and being an internet random that I am, I don't expect you or anyone to take my opinion all that seriously. That being said, I think that 90% of Knowles issues were personnel and, especially last week, effort.Good analysis, I'm wondering if this years version was really just a 3-3 with a bigger LB that they called a DE. I think he’ll use a couple million to make Liam Clifford a GA?With the staff salary pool, I hope Campbell takes full advantage and tries to get the best coaching staff he can, and not just import the ISU staff and give them big raises. He should be looking for the best OC, Wr, OL coaches available, and they don’t even need to be available, poach the best assistants wherever they are.
LJ sr. Was with O'Brien the whole time he was our coach. If you remember Johnson was a candidate for the HC job when O'Brien left. This may be like BoB keeping Larry Johnson for a while....
Given the changeover in personnel and the near empty recruiting class, I think there will be an opportunity to recruit some decent players from the portal.Take it for what it's worth, and being an internet random that I am, I don't expect you or anyone to take my opinion all that seriously. That being said, part of a coach's job is to keep guys playing hard or play the ones who will. But looking at the schedule, I really think the team, defensively, had 3 bad games: Ohio State (there ain't a DC alive that was going to do better that day, total mismatch personnel-wise), UCLA, and Rutgers. UCLA and Rutgers, I will never believe they were playing hard or focused. Terrible look, but it was a terrible and long season.
Iowa will look bad on paper, not doubt, but that is what Iowa is and does to most teams. The qb took advantage of some poor angles/bad tackling on 3 runs and that was that in that game. But you go into the 4th and you have gotten several stops and they're sitting on 10 points, that's a win for the Defense. I know they didn't get a stop at the end, but poor tackling and angles killed them.
I hope they keep Knowles and recruit, from ISU or elsewhere, the big double team eating tackles he prefers. Looks like a longshot now to do that, I get it. Comes with coach change. But when guys got after it and tackled, the system for most part took them to the ball. That wasn't a fluke against Indiana, they bothered them as much as anyone has or will all year on offense.
Oh well, good discussion and thank you for the kind words on the analysis. I am looking back over some of the stuff I wrote down what feels like yesterday but turns out was 2018(!) about what he did schematically, probably doesn't do any of it anymore anyways ha.
Edit: It is funny in that Iowa State has been one of the few teams to out-Iowa Iowa consistently head to head. They shut down that run pretty well year after year.
It’s not that uncommon for new coaches to retain one or two guys to provide some continuity. BOB actually kept both Johnson and VanderlindenThis may be like BoB keeping Larry Johnson for a while....
Yessir.Given the changeover in personnel and the near empty recruiting class, I think there will be an opportunity to recruit some decent players from the portal.
That’s because it’s probably not true.Seems like a follow up phone call could have done the trick.
I thought Chris Partridge played drums with his family’s band. No?No. I don't know him. I know he was a great recruiter. We need recruits.
He was fired after the Conner stallions bs. What do I care? Win baby.
Is he a good coach? Is he a dick?
That's one of my question marks as well, can the 3-3-5 work in the Big 10? I remember when Rich Rodriguez tried that at UM and it failed.
big 10 will see this defence and RUN BABY RUN, ALL GAME!!!!!!!That's one of my question marks as well, can the 3-3-5 work in the Big 10? I remember when Rich Rodriguez tried that at UM and it failed.
Landon did not look into Heacock's background very carefully. Heacock uses multiple fronts (3-3, 3-4, 4-3) depending on where he coached and what he had to work with. That's one of my question marks as well, can the 3-3-5 work in the Big 10? I remember when Rich Rodriguez tried that at UM and it failed.
Yes, yes you will. Will I get a link to anonymous rumors on message boards?
Reported by who? Some dude in his parents’ basement? This is the kind of "reporting" that leads to a thread reaching 8,000 posts in a matter of days.Thats what was reported, no clue.
Vanderlinden. There’s a guy I would bring back in a heartbeat. The linebackers were phenomenal during his tenure. It’s not that uncommon for new coaches to retain one or two guys to provide some continuity. BOB actually kept both Johnson and Vanderlinden
Do we want a big12 dc????Good. That means we can take their DC
Do we want a big12 dc????
We all know who’s not going to play in a meaningless bowl game. And they shouldn’t. Play a ton of young guys and have fun. They may not care about the actual game, but the extra practices can be very important assessment for the new staff. Regardless of who coaches the game (guessing it’ll be TS), Campbell should be able to get a jump start on next year and help decide who he wants to keep.
Why?I don't know about anyone else but ISU will be my second team to support. At least for a little while.
I’m struggling now. Trying to be unhappy about our football program, but I’m thrilled to have Campbell and hear that Smith will stay on. I love it.

I have never once in my life ever said anything even remotely hyperbolic.Perhaps the animosity between TS and any particular BOT member(s), AD, etc have been overblown? Perhaps there is nothing there…completely void of drama. I know that seems strange here considering not a single soul on this board is ever hyperbolic in any way/shape/form.

The BWICAC will be bitching by Xmas… count on it!There is still Kraft. We can funnel our hate to him until we find a weakness in the coaching staff to exploit.
I once has a yearlong “discussion” with a blowhard on another website who insisted I tell him he was right over and over because his opinions were facts. Finally I told him that he was showing serious narcissistic tendencies. His response was, “I am the least narcissistic person you’d ever meet.”I have never once in my life ever said anything even remotely hyperbolic.

Yeah Ron Vanderlinden is the guy he kept but eventually canned.LJ sr. Was with O'Brien the whole time he was our coach. If you remember Johnson was a candidate for the HC job when O'Brien left.
Still not following. ISU didn’t "give" us anything. Not sure why any PSU fan would now pull for the Cyclones. It’s called a gift
I put the guys name up in a previous post. Matt Fortuna, he is a reporter. If you would of actually followed a conversation and not just picked certain statements you would have known who. It's posting like you do without reading everything that makes posts reach 8,000.Reported by who? Some dude in his parents’ basement? He had some good receivers lined up before they all decomitted

Talk to me when you hit 30, redshirt.
His first recruiting class was Denmark's class who are rs freshman followed by Kobe Howard class who are true freshman. For me it's more the failure to develop WRs than to recruit them.
Just so I can get 30 posts in so I can continue to talk to you and continue my journey to All- Conference.Ouch! That hurt. You ran your mouth.
