But what exactly does “connecting with the previous generation” mean? Franklin’s last three seasons all had double-digit wins. That only happened three times in the 15 seasons before he took over. What are people hoping to see that Franklin didn’t deliver, but supposedly existed before his tenure—aside from the two national championships in the '80s?
Lest we forget, a bunch of undefeated teams. And many bowl wins.

I'm 56 and look late 30s. I work a physical job. Just took another one. You keep moving around and it will keep you young. Take key vitamins. I plan on working til at least 72. I need purpose. 60 is the new 50.
So by your reckoning I must be somewhere around 70 or so. lol

Did he contact PS? Yup. What will come of it is the question. IMO he wouldn't be a terrible choice and better than some mentioned. But my guess would be that Kraft struck out on all of his top candidates for him to get a shot. I would most certainly take him over Matt Rhule.

I’m narrowing in on the idea that what PSU needs in a coach is someone who can inspire greater levels of NIL and attract better QB talent than what we normally get. Hopefully that combo exists and is available.

Of course those two characteristics alone do not get us over the hump, but they are critical and could be associated with other attributes the program needs to be strong in.

I have the impression that NIL and the like is better left to those admin/organizational types who are good at that, and the HC just makes the best uses of the dollars afforded him.

Not taking full advantage of what was given Franklin is one of the reasons he is gone. It's just my take but Franklin was too much of a psychologist and babysitter of egos with his players.

Elko to me represents the Home Run hire. Tough, experienced, head coach that comes with a good staff and multiple recruits. If we hire a coordinator, which i can get behind, there is going to a longer ramp up period before he can recruit his guys and assemble a staff.

Unfortunately I think the answer to the first part, the NIL deals, is Rhule. I think that's who all of the pro Paterno boosters are going to push for with Kraft. I agree that I'd prefer and offensive coach and developer of QBs. I'm tired of watching PSU offenses look stuck in the mud when other programs bring in first year starters and make them look Heisman worthy immediately. PSU needs to break with history and start building a reputation as a program that can put QBs into the NFL. Yes, I know every QB under Franklin made it to the NFL but none of them ever did anything meaningful there.

It"s going to be Matt Rhule. No, I'm not in the know but I've noticed the narrative changing about Rhule. "....sure he hasn't beaten top teams but he has coached teams at Temple and Baylor that didn't have Penn State resources." "Look where he has brought Nebraska!" . Plus the ongoing "he and his wife are both penn staters"....blah, blah, blah
PLEASE NO!

Does Elko bring his recruits if the NIL stays with aTm?

His offense at Nebraska looks like it’s trying to back up in mud. No bueno. OL is putrid.

I'm not disagreeing QBs have been a let down, but this NFL achievement=college success idea isn't born out in reality.

Which program currently has this reputation as a pipeline for QBs to make the NFL and do something meaningful when they get there?

CJ Stroud is the first OSU QB do ever do something in the NFL, ever. I think Collins may have better stats NFL stats than every former Buckeye qb combined. It's NFL bust after bust after bust.

Michigan? No
Bama? Saban is gone, and even then its Hurts who transferred out and Tua, who is going to be brain dead. The rest are busts.
Clemson? You've got Lawrence drafted in 2021 and Watson in 2017. The only other QB drafted under Dabo since 2009 is Tahj Boyd.
UGA? Nope.
LSU? Burrow was under Ed O. Daniels under Kelly.
Texas? Nope
USC? No, although you can argue it's Riley's reputation wherever he goes.

So we need to hire Lincoln Riley.

All good points. I think to be successful in college, it helps tremendously to be mobile.

Agree, that’s why I wouldn’t wanna be making the Coach decision. Kraft has a duty to find the guy. I can best put Penn State in position to win a championship, but is putting the team in the best position to win one due to having the best head coach or due to having 10 million extra dollars a year to get the best players?
I don’t know if the NIL $ flows in as much without Rhule

PSU alum members at work - one of them pretty tight w/ Hack - both say Rhule is the target. These guys know nothing though and Hack, well.

Joe has been dead for almost a decade and a half. I'm not sure I buy that there is this massive pot of gold at the end of the Paterno Booster Rainbow that Rhule somehow magically unlocks.
