All good points. I think to be successful in college, it helps tremendously to be mobile.

8-5
9-4
8-5
Louisville's record their 3 seasons with Lamar Jackson starting.

8-6
8-5
Wyoming with Josh Allen starting

7-6
5-7
Texas Tech with Patrick Mahomes starting

12-1 (CFP)
11-2
10-2
Notre Dame with Ian Book starting.

14-1 (Champs)
15-0 (Champs)
UGA with Stetson Bennett starting

There's just no correlation. Too many other factors.

Joe has been dead for almost a decade and a half. I'm not sure I buy that there is this massive pot of gold at the end of the Paterno Booster Rainbow that Rhule somehow magically unlocks.

Let’s not start counting money that may not come to fruition.

Of course. But having a multidimensional QB sure does make it harder for the defense. Your also taking W/L records by TEAMS that may or may not have had much other talent besides QB. On the other hand, I contend that UGA did not win because of Stetson Bennett.

Agreed. And Franklin ran offenses that required it, making the commitment to Drew and Clifford even more puzzling. Just tired of this narrative that we lose because we aren't churning out Lamar and Josh Allen esque QBs every cycle.

Lots of names being thrown around. I say, don’t force it. If Kraft can’t get his man, don’t hire anyone. Put the program on pause until you can get who you want, however long it takes.

True. You just need someone who can run when they have to. Move the sticks etc. Clifford ran a fair amount when he first got the starting job, then it felt like they pulled him back from doing that because the depth behind him wasn’t good.

I'm not disagreeing QBs have been a let down, but this NFL achievement=college success idea isn't born out in reality.

Which program currently has this reputation as a pipeline for QBs to make the NFL and do something meaningful when they get there?

CJ Stroud is the first OSU QB do ever do something in the NFL, ever. I think Collins may have better stats NFL stats than every former Buckeye qb combined. It's NFL bust after bust after bust.

Michigan? No
Bama? Saban is gone, and even then its Hurts who transferred out and Tua, who is going to be brain dead. The rest are busts.
Clemson? You've got Lawrence drafted in 2021 and Watson in 2017. The only other QB drafted under Dabo since 2009 is Tahj Boyd.
UGA? Nope.
LSU? Burrow was under Ed O. Daniels under Kelly.
Texas? Nope
USC? No, although you can argue it's Riley's reputation wherever he goes.

So we need to hire Lincoln Riley.
Almost every school you named has had QBs do more meaningful things in the NFL. Your definition of meaningful apparently is different from mine. For example, you didn't mention Justin Fields who has started games in multiple seasons for multiple teams. Is he a top NFL QB? No. But he's seen far more meaningful action and has done substantially more than any PSU NFL QB in 20 years. Who was the last PSU QB to get an NFL start? Kerry Collins?

Matt McGloin started a game or two for the Raiders.

I have no inside info and hope I'm wrong, but it's quite clear that many refuse to let the Paterno era go. Whether those fans are the same ones with the money to make a difference in hiring decisions, buyouts, NIL, etc., I do not know.

Thanks, forgot about that. The point is the same however, almost all schools the prior poster named have had a QB do more in the NFL than every PSU QB combined in the past 20-30 years.

Joe Paterno once said to wealthy alumni something like the following: ”We want your dollars, not your two cents”.

McSorley started some games for Arizona a few years ago. McGloin got starts.

Fields has started for absolutely god awful teams (I live in Chicago) and is about to get benched by the terrible Jets. Starting just seems like a low bar for meaningful. I get that starting is hard. So is getting drafted.

With that in mind. Kerry Collins has more starts/yards/completions/touchdowns than every Ohio State QB that's ever been drafted, combined.

Since the 2005 season Collins has better stats than Fields.

Both have 50 starts
Collins has 1 playoff start. Fields none.
Collins has 963 completions. Fields 770
Collins 55 TDs. Fields 49.

Let's just accept the fact that We Are not a QB factory but have existed near the top of the food chain since Joe became the HC and won two NC's. We don't have to be churning out NFL QB's to win NC's.

Do we have to churn out NFL QB's? I mean, MRob was nice, as was Trace.

No program is a modern qb factory. Oklahoma was, but not under the current staff.

Closest thing might be Oregon, but Lanning has never gotten a hs recruit drafted. All of his starters have been transfers.

I see Doug Pederson's name bounced around on X. Not the warmest personality I've been around. Seems to keep to himself (w/ his wife) alot. Doesn't play w/ the Blue Tee guys. Maybe I just need more time w/ him to come around.

Guy has no college coaching experience plus fired at his last two NFL jobs. I know he had a Super Bowl but hard pass.

Total BS, but everyone is allowed their opinion.

Franklin is gone, you gonna keep bitching until he is rehired by PS? Probably a long wait.
No, I’m actually going to ***** about the less than stellar person they hire instead because it’s likely going to go that way.

He’s been around successful football his whole life. There’s a pedigree there. His dad was HS coach in Ohio and he played at Div 2 powerhouse Mount Union. The more I read about him, the more I like him. He seems humble and focused and his teams have an identity. I’m on board. It just makes too much sense.
He has been there since the 2016 season and has had a few opportunities to leave. I am not sure how good those opportunities have been in terms of a top ten job like ours. I am encouraged that he is from Ohio and he seems to bring an element of toughness and grit that I think we have lacked under Franklin.

It could take a lot to pry him out of Ames. He and his family are settled there and the school likes him as evidenced by the recent contract extension. He has security in Ames.

I agree that he would be a good hire. My concern and admittedly I have not researched this aspect but how successful has he been developing QBs and a good or innovative offense? That is a kind of difficult to assess because he has lacked the talent that we have had. Also wondering how strong of a recruiter he is although that facet has changed with the NIL era. However, as a new coach in a new area of the country you will need to sell yourself, your vision, the university, the program, etc.
