The board cannot include any current p4 head coach likely to make the playoffs. PSU cannot afford to wait and essentially cancel the 2026 season and possibly 2027 as well.
That's just not how the world works now. Listen to the BWI podcast this week and Nate and Fitz explain it

Missing the portal and high school sign on periods will literally be a disaster for PSU. There is no rescuing the 2026 season at that point. The team would be composed of very low level talent.

Rhule (stays at Neb)
Elko (no chance. Stays at TexasAM)
Campbell solid choice
Hartline would likely take the job if offered
Meyer (not in a million year)
Drinkwitz (Nope. Stays in the SEC)
Brohm is not leaving his alma mater
Forget anyone on the staff

Campbell, Chesney, Sumrall, Golesh, are likely on their "board" along with Brady. Given that I am not an insider I do not know if they are putting out feelers to NFL coordinators, like Brady, who would consider a return to college for a HC gig

Give it to Terry Smith and let him build his staff.
Love Terry Smith but has never been a head coach except at the HS level. Not saying that is always a prerequisite. If he can in light of all the issues and distractions get the team to play competitively against tOSU and Indiana that would definitely make it a worth careful consideration.

Agree with Elko. Think Drink and Brohm would leave.

And give him 3 to 4 years before a controversy surfaces. But the main question......are there enough loose, easy coeds to get Urban to coach at PSU ?? He's a scumbag.
A "scumbag." Are we hiring a football coach or anointing a new Pope?

You know, Meyer probably would have yet another NC under his belt, but Ohio State was under sanctions (not Meyer's doing, but Tressel's) when Meyer's team was undefeated in 2012. Had Penn State handled the Sandusky mess better, we could've had Meyer as coach and had NCs of our own during the 2010s, and a better program today.

Drink is next on the list of all the SEC programs after Kiffin. Why would he turn down an offer from Florida, LSU, or Arkansas (home state) or Auburn if/when it opens to go up north?

Brohm is from Kentucky and played at Louisville. Much of his extended family are alumni. Why would he leave?

Very, very doubtful.

I totally agree. Meyer, like he has done at every college stop, would turn this program into a "major" force in short order because he'd be a magnet for transfers and recruits. Also, if you watch his segments with DiNardo on BTN, he obviously still is keeping up on the Big 10 and what works and doesn't work.

Joe Brady with the blessing of Pegula.
Why would he be better than even Chesney or the Tulane coach, who have run successful programs, albeit at a lower level? Those coaches already would have ready made staffs to come with them with their recruiting and transfer contacts. Brady has the smell of the O'Brien situation all over again; if he would be even somewhat succecssful, he'd probably leave for an NFL job in a NY minute.

Round 1- Dec 19-20
Round 2- Jan 1
Portal- Jan 2-16
‘High School Sign On Period’ doesn’t matter anymore
The portal opens for 30 days for that team whenever a coach leaves

Drink gets one of those jobs, probably stays. But he might see the Penn State job as a better job.

Brohm is interesting in that you only get one go-round, and if he thinks he can win a national title in one place but not the other, he could certainly go to Penn State. It might be the last chance he gets to run a blue blood program.

He has a really good situation now at Louisville; he has a talented program that plays in a very nice stadium with a good fan base in a major conference at a school in a big city that just happens to be his alma mater.

I would be very interested in hearing your compelling reasons why DeBoer would make such a severe downgrade in position.
He doesn’t like being there. Or he loses 2 more games this year and his seat starts getting hot. Or it’s not as much of a downgrade as you think.

Nate and Sean keep talking about him. If Elko is on the list, DeBoer should be too

The only way i can see DeBoer available is if they blow a few games and Bama makes a run at Swinney

Yes, I'm sure that he hates being at the helm of the greatest program in CFB and dreams of pumping out the overflowing septic tank that is PSU. Following the title tradition of Bryant and Saban when you can associate your legacy with such media darlings as Paterno and Franklin. They build statues and name stuff after winners there, and they stay that way.

No, that wouldn't be a downgrade at all.

He does. But that doesn’t mean his ears are closed to all opportunities, and I wouldn’t rule it out is all I’m saying. It’s as likely as anything right now.

Is Elko playing his way out of consideration? Whether he wants the job or not, we can't wait until A&M is eliminated from the playoffs, can we?
If whether or not a Coach is still coaching after Thanksgiving is a criteria, the decision makers are more "lost" than one could imagine.

Swinney has lost a bit shine as of late, but could still happen if Bama gets desperate to fill a position. DeBoer would have to lose their remaining 4 games. I don't see that happening, they are on a 7 game win streak including 4 straight against ranked teams.

”More than anything, the pace at which the carousel is moving stands out. Consider the Penn State coaching search, only 18 days old. We barely had time to digest the magnitude of James Franklin's firing after 11-plus seasons at PSU -- and a College Football Playoff semifinal appearance in January -- before potential replacement Curt Cignetti agreed to a new eight-year, $93 million contract with Indiana. A day later, Nebraska's Matt Rhule -- considered by many to be the favored target for Penn State athletic director Pat Kraft -- saw the Cornhuskers lose 24-6 at Minnesota, their sixth consecutive defeat to the Golden Gophers. Then Rhule agreed to his own extension on Oct. 30.

Where will Penn State turn now? And how will Texas A&M's surge under Mike Elko, a New Jersey native who played college football at Penn, impact the search? Who else is working their way into the mix?”

I wonder how nebby athletic supporters are reacting to Rhule’s extension.

Again. He is from Kentucky. He went to Louisville and his extended family are Louisville alum. He is paid 5.9m annually and will surely get a bump. He has the team at 6 and 1 and he is in the ACC, arguably a much easier path to the playoffs. He is not leaving.

From many sources the fit is not great. He is from South Dakota and not a good old southern boy. If you think that does not matter in Alabama, think again. Now, if he wins like Saban did, they will build him a statue next to Saban and Bear, but if he falters again this year, the pitchforks will be out. Having said that, he is on track to play for the SEC championship and a CFP playoff berth, so I do not think this is realistic

I agree it would be a massive downgrade for him, but getting out of Alabama may be appealing.

Here are the upgrades over Franklin. There are no additional choices than these as far as upgrades:

Elko
Brohm
Hartline
Drinkwitz
Meyer

That's it. Not Campbell, not Chesney who is winning with Curts recruits, and not any of the group of 5 guys.

Rhule is off the board. New deal has $15M buyout this year.
If CJF gets a new job immediately his buyout drops to basically zero. If so, a $15M buyout for Rhule wouldn't be a problem should PSU still want him.
