Every candidate that's been named, aside from Freeman, Elko and Deboer is a 50/50 hire, it's just something PSU has to deal with now.
Very fair first sentence.
This was always the argument against firing a coach that typically won 9-10 games a season. The risk of doing so didn't outweigh the reward once you factor in the likelihood of finding a guy that would be better. None of the surefire homerun coaches - Day, Smart, Saban - were ever a possibility to hire and the next tier who we have apparently reached out to will be difficult to pry away from their current programs. That leaves you with a pool of candidates that all have risks, the most common one being that they have the same flaw as Franklin... they struggle as an underdog against top opponents.

Does Kraft want a high ceiling, or high floor, from his next hire? We just fired a guy with a high floor, so the assumption is he would want a high ceiling guy. The flipside is all of the high ceiling guys are also have a low floor, except for those 3-4 premium guys that PSU has zero chance of hiring.
My question is what do you consider as the “high floor” of Franklin? This year wasn’t looking so good.

There is no way his floor is higher than any of the potential candidates, and I don’t think his future ceiling at PSU would have been as high as his past success.

Your argument is based on nothing by saying they would get trounced every week. They were one stop away from winning every game he lost this season…that’s hardly getting trounced. They got trounced against OSU and Franklin wasn’t there.

That's fair enough. Maybe they would have still fought and lost them all close like they have except OSU.

Still, they would be 3-6 with next year supposedly being even worse. Would have seemed very hopeless. I heard a lot of people at the Northwestern game saying they would not spend any more money on this as long as he was still coaching. I would have still bought tickets, but I'm a glutton for punishment and donuts.

Again, it’s just your opinion….there’s no way to prove he would be 3-6. I think he would have been 5-4, so my argument is as valid as yours.

Why be positive?

😞
It’s not about being positive, it’s about people posting “so and so is never going to come to Penn State” or “so and so is never going to leave their current job.” None of us know…we can all speculate and that’s fine, but to post like you’re in the know is lame.

No, an opinion is “I don’t think so and so will come to Penn State” or “I doubt so and so will leave his job.” Saying “he isn’t leaving Bama to come here” is not an opinion, it’s a statement of fact and posting a statement of fact while having no clue is lame.

Attaboy. Last three years were 11 wins, 10 wins, 13 wins and the bitching and moaning from you and your ilk was louder than ever.
Fun with numbers. Interestingly, I had a similar conversation with my boss today about some numbers that were being presented in a way that made a certain department look bad. I could have easily presented them with the opposite conclusion.

So, you chose a rather arbitrary 3 year span to make Franklin appear excellent (and honestly he did very well over that span).
How about the 6 year span of 20-25? You could say half of those seasons (20, 21, 25) were putrid and he don't look so great.

How about if I said a coach over 11 complete seasons, had 1 conference title, 3 seasons with 2 losses, and no seasons with 1 loss? Would you rate that coach as good?

I challenge you to provide the posts of mine complaining about Franklin’s success in any of the seasons from ‘22-‘24.
I complained because in those years his biggest win was against Utah in a irrelevant Rose Bowl.

versus OSU 0-3
versus Michigan 0-2
versus ND 0-1

Thank you BGJ for the memories!

Since it's already out there DeBoer has gone through his background checks.
Everyone has a price to leave their current position. But is he willing to leave his team, or make the announcement, during the playoffs, because I cannot imagine we’re willing to wait until after the playoffs. At that point the team will be gutted to the point that numerically it’s going to be hard to have a roster for next year let alone be competitive in any way whatsoever in 2026 or 2027. The logistics of it just seem impossible to me.

The Iowa and Indiana games could have gone either way. There's no way of knowing. What can be done about it now? If they decided to bring him back, does he have to come back to get the $50 million?

Put another way, would anyone be happy hiring that resume at Penn State today?

Same.
And it wasn’t just losing. I felt good after Indiana last week. Not because we lost or kept it close, but because for the first time in what seems like forever we controlled play for long stretches against a B10 heavyweight. We had them on their heels! Took away things they liked to do!

It was invigorating not giving up 400 yards rushing to a really good running team. Or making the team (gasp) drop back to pass to beat you.

The comedy that has been Michigan and Ohio State games for years.

I know right?

Cig has turned the world on its side.

I don’t think they’ll beat Ohio State but I won’t by surprised either.
I would be stunned if Ohio State does not boat race Indiana. Indiana has done an excellent job maximizing their blue chip players and play excellent complimentary football, but the talent level is simply not at the level of OSU. Smith and Tate are nightmare match ups for any defensive scheme. OSU's Achilles heel is their run game, but even one dimensional how does any team control those two aliens with Sayin playing the way he is?

Their game probably will be similar to their game last season, although IU may be a little more prepared to play a game like that this season.

Holy F. You are starting to act like some of the crazy Fers on here. Get your head out of your ***.

So is that statement a fact or an opinion? I say it is an opinion, like my other posts and like 97% of all posts by all posters.

So stop acting like a fn ******* with your lame line ****. That is a fact, not an opinion.

Can't disagree with this post at all, good post IMO. I would be stunned if it was a boat racing, but your analysis makes a lot of sense.

I think Indiana can stay in the game because they can control the clock/ball on offense and stop the run on defense.

PSU showed the way to beat Indiana. OSU coaching staff watched that game over and over we can be sure. Unlike AK, OSU will actually run many of the PSU plays again to see if Indiana has adjusted at all. It may be close for a half. I expect OSU to run away in the 2nd half.

Could be.

Don't shortchange our Nittany Lions last week, though. I think, had Ohio State come to Happy Valley, and the offense FINALLY decided to open it up, you would see a close game between Penn State and Ohio State. I also think that playing some of the younger guys on defense helped a lot.

Shortchange? I am giving them full credit. They came to play last week like we expected all season long. They showed a lot of wholes and gaps in Indiana and OSU will take full advantage of those this week.
