At this point the entire search has been botched regardless of the pick. All the recruits are gone, the seniors are gone, and a good number of kids are going to portal out, no matter who he gets. Kraft failed.

Why did every other coach in his position hold the class together?
Who's job was it?
Had he held the class together someone might hire him someday to be a HC but clearly he's not capable...but we can agree to disagree.
A week ago--the class fell apart LONG before thatGee, name all these other programs whose former coach landed at another P4 job for $8.5 mil/year and an NIL Budget? ZERO - that's how many you freaking moron.

Golesh was a successful position coach in P4 for years and then was a successful offensive coordinator for Tennessee. He is a lot more qualified than Chesney for a power football head coach job.Golesh hasn't really done anything special. Chesney is a better option from the lower HC ranks.
He did't though--he spent his career as a HC at Gateway then was going through a normal progression. He clearly wanted to be a HC. He was prepared to be a DC though if we're being honest but he had high aspirations--listen to him.If he wanted to be a HC one day maybe he should have gotten on it before he was approaching 60 instead of spending his entire career coaching a position group. Hell maybe a DC job even? He was only passed over as DC 3 times in the last 5 seasons here.
You don't know who or what held classes together at other schools. Billy Napier and Brian Kelly not being in positions to poach their old classes certainly didn't hurt.

Why does everyone act like Franklin signed with Va Tech a month ago--the class fell apart long before that.

Your inability to deal with reality is hysterical but also a genuine cause for concern
It can't be no one's job. That doesn't even make senseNo one's job. When you fire the HC and don't immediately name a replacement losing f'ing recruits is a risk you take. Terry can't offer any vision of the future for the program. Closest to being able to do that would be Kraft.
Let's not act like Franklin hasn't been in touch with people he needs to be in touch with in the meantime. You're not that naïve.
Again, when did the kids decommit? It's a simple questionWhat a dip**** - accuses others of not dealing with reality when his response is utterly irrelevant to the question asked and is completely incomprehensible making no sense whatsoever relative to the REALITY of the question posed.
Only a moron troll like yourself can postulate that it makes no difference that the former coach who recruited all of the existing roster and 2026 class landed at another P4 Program paying him $8.5mm/yr with a REAL NIL Budget (unlike your fantasy bs NIL budget that you claim Terry Smith posseses) only 5 weeks after being fired. You telling others that they aren't living in reality is beyond rich. LMAO
It can't be no one's job. That doesn't even make sense
You risk losing recruiting when you keep a guy who just lost to UCLA and Northwestern. Everything is a risk but that doesn't alter Terry was responsible for maintaining the class.
I never said Franklin didn't do that--nor did I imply that. If Terry wanted the job, or even to be considered, he had to keep the class together. He failed--just like he did on the field against Iowa, Ohio State and especially Indiana....and Rutgers too if we're being honest.
Again, when did the kids decommit? It's a simple question
You aren't living in reality kiddo
He had an inventory and failed--he wasn't put in a position to fail. See Florida, LSU, Arkansas, etc.Sure it can. If you're a car salesman and you work at a dealer where you have no inventory, it might still be your job to sell cars, but its not reasonable to expect big numbers out of you and your boss has put you in a position to fail.
So you agree Franklin's date of hire by VT is irrelevant since he was likely in touch with people prior.
What's getting bad?I do hope everyone who bitched about Franklin nonstop really enjoys how bad this may get. You all deserve it.
I will take my chances. I was over BGJ’s act.I do hope everyone who bitched about Franklin nonstop really enjoys how bad this may get. You all deserve it.
What's getting bad?
I also don't think many people complained about him nonstop--I didn't want him fired until he lost to Northwestern.
Had he fired AK after the Oregon game he might still have a job
I think it's funny you and other supposed Penn State fans are hoping it gets bad
I do hope everyone who bitched about Franklin nonstop really enjoys how bad this may get. You all deserve it.
Why are you so worried about the 2026 recruiting class? The portal makes that irrelevant. Those kids weren't guaranteed to me here long term anyway. That wasn't directed at you and I don't want it to get bad. I said it may get bad, which is the reality of the situation. Penn State currently has the 121st class in the country and is looking at not have a HC in place for signing day. It's not great. Hopefully Kraft has something up his sleeve.
Had he hired Terry instead of Knowles as DC he might still have a job.
How would it have been Franklin's job? What? Stop drinkingThey're all going to cry about Franklin hiring Smith after Krafty The Clown chose not to give Smith the job. Somehow it's Franklin's and Smith's job to keep all the current players and recruits in place when Krafty said he didn't want them???? Just sadly laughable....
He had an inventory and failed--he wasn't put in a position to fail. See Florida, LSU, Arkansas, etc.
His date of hire isn't irrelevant because kids aren't just following him when he doesn't have a job.
And Terry should have been honest about James to keep them here but...
And the future is everything Penn State is--he doesn't need a coach--see LSU....see FloridaHe has no inventory. Inventory is the future. He has no future to sell. All he has is a bunch of deposits for a model that was cancelled with no replacement. You put the deposit down for a convertible? Well it might be that, or an suv, or a minivan. Just stick with us.
Quality Education, still Penn State, and football facilities, and history. And the future is everything Penn State is--he doesn't need a coach--see LSU....see Florida
Explain how they did it...
There's no need to make excuses for Terry--he failed. Period.
Why are you so worried about the 2026 recruiting class? The portal makes that irrelevant. Those kids weren't guaranteed to me here long term anyway.
It's a single class--it doesn't matter.
Terry wasn't capable of being the DC--you could argue he should have kept Tom Allen I suppose
Knowles wasn't why they lost to Oregon or Northwestern though

He's not...he thinks he isTerry wasn't capable of being the DC 11 months ago but now he's suddenly HC material. ok.
Portal is unlikely to make up for what could be one of the worst classes in all of college football, plus the attrition we're going to see from our own, unless the new coach has a roster they're going to raid the **** out of. Not having a portal window after spring ball is going to hurt, and I'd rather the new staff not start in a hole.
And Terry needed to be honest with the kids about James but he sided with James over the program he claimed to loveI clearly don't like Terry (as HC material) so I'm not making excuses for him.
Florida and LSU are more attractive schools than Penn State and kids committed to the school vs the coach? How's that for a reason. Penn State not as attractive as everyone here seems to think it is. Franklin is a players coach and his recruiting classes tended to be full of kids who wanted to play for him. Hell he got Huhn on board with trolling Penn State tomorrow for his “announcement”
With that view then Chesney should have been hired couple weeks ago as soon as Elko dropped out. Just leave immediately and forget your team. JMU has another game to play. How is letting him finish the last game any different from him finishing games 9-12 for example? If Chesney is the guy a deal has been in the works for a couple weeks. You make it sound like he won't start until February. If Kraft agreed to wait a week so to not hurt feelings at JMU, then he’s not qualified to be the AD at PSU, cause that’s absolutely insane, which i highly doubt that’s the case. Signing day is Wednesday, if Chesney is the hire then he starts immediately. This is Penn State for godsake. Ohio State would never think like this.
Step back from the ledge! Get the right hire and we will get meaningful contributors that portal IN. I’ll give you that we lose out on a good recruiting class, but each year about 2 - 3 kids burn shirts and make somewhat meaningful contributions. The portal has made recruiting classes largely irrelevant. Kids transfer in and out each year.At this point the entire search has been botched regardless of the pick. All the recruits are gone, the seniors are gone, and a good number of kids are going to portal out, no matter who he gets. Kraft failed.

What about Indiana? I have been under the assumption that Indiana’s success was 97% portal, 2% perspiration, 1% inspiration.I love how everyone thinks the portal is this magic recipe for success. As Saban said a few weeks ago, you can’t live in the portal and have long term success. The portal is beneficial to help booster a roster than needs a player here and there or add depth. Thinking you can assemble an entire roster of portal players and win gets you Colorado like results.
Why would Diaz leave a football powerhouse like Duke for Penn State? The longer it drags on, the more I'd be convinced that it is a current head coach with a pending CCG who wants to do right by those players and not disrupt that. There would be no reason for a non-head coach not to leave or at least be announced.
Granted the same sentiment would also apply if said team is going to the CFP but if you are going to take over a new team, you can't wait until late December to get going. So I think in the slim chance the coach in question is heading a CFP team, they'd have to leave before the playoffs.
So anyway, I'm guessing that if Kraft is actually organized and doing a good job that it is Chesney or Sitake (or I guess DeBour as a huge longshot). If someone is not already in the bag then Kraft has f'ed up big time.
Edit: I'd also put Diaz as a real possibility as one of the coaches with a game next week.
I do hope everyone who bitched about Franklin nonstop really enjoys how bad this may get. You all deserve it.
Maybe, if we’re hiring God. He (or she) accomplished a lot in 7 days.Doesn't matter in the big picture. Do we beat Michigan or Washington or USC next year if our coach was hired today but we lose to them if he is hired in a week?
And the Gaff. Don’t forget the Gaff!Quality Education, still Penn State, and football facilities, and history.
Yes, the gaff pitchers of 501 Blue. I wish I was having one this morning. And the Gaff. Don’t forget the Gaff!
How much of Colorado’s results falls on Sanders?I love how everyone thinks the portal is this magic recipe for success.
