What about Indiana? I have been under the assumption that Indiana’s success was 97% portal, 2% perspiration, 1% inspiration.
Cignetti brought approximately 30 players with him from JMU that had already played together, under him and were national championship caliber players at the FCS level. He didn’t just grab random players from the portal. Now, could someone like Chesney do the same thing? Sure, however, I think duplicating what Cignetti did will be very difficult.

How much of Colorado’s results falls on Sanders?
The buck stops at Sanders, absolutely. He went for the easy fix by just brining in players and running off the current roster without trying to develop anyone and it backfired on him. I don’t feel bad for him whatsoever.

Me neither. I think he’s been as successful as he’s been as a coach due to who he is, not his ability.

I see him leaving at some point for NFL or just broadcasting. I do not see him staying in the College game.

No one's job. When you fire the HC and don't immediately name a replacement losing f'ing recruits is a risk you take. Terry can't offer any vision of the future for the program. Closest to being able to do that would be Kraft.

Let's not act like Franklin hasn't been in touch with people he needs to be in touch with in the meantime. You're not that naïve.

If he had high aspirations why hasn't he left for a DC job? He's been associate head coach through 3 DC replacement searches where he wasn't given the job. Passed over for outside hires each time.
As I said in a prior post Jackson Ford met with Kraft during a recruiting visit. You are correct, when you fire a coach and let the replacement hire drag out, you will lose recruits. Who is to hold the class together? Why didn’t do many verbals at other schools decommit? I submit that Kraft has not succeeded in persuading any of these kids that the program will be just fine and they should stay the course.

And Terry needed to be honest with the kids about James but he sided with James over the program he claimed to love
Oh look another post more ******** from Lando. Yeah that’s right the Penn State lifer sided with Franklin over Penn State.

Step back from the ledge! Get the right hire and we will get meaningful contributors that portal IN. I’ll give you that we lose out on a good recruiting class, but each year about 2 - 3 kids burn shirts and make somewhat meaningful contributions. The portal has made recruiting classes largely irrelevant. Kids transfer in and out each year.

A guy like Hartline likely doesn’t bring anyone from OSU bc he doesn’t want to burn bridges. But his tenure there has created tons of relationships with kids that went elsewhere for whatever reason. Suddenly he is the head guy at a school with maybe 90 open seats. Talent that is ready to contribute right away will come.
Not to be Debbie Downer here, but the reality is that the moment the games ended on Saturday, all these kids (particularly the high end ones) who plan on entering the portal already had their people contacting other schools trying to make their deals. This is a critical week, for both national signing day as well as the transfer portal, if we don't have a coach in the next day or so, our entire team next year will be made up with kids who couldn't make it in other schools and had no other options but to come to Penn State.

im not here to argue if this was Terrys job or not. Supposedly our NIL collective told the commits to look elsewhere. Some might say that’s indicative of knowing that the new guy is bringing his kids with him. Some might say it’s because they want the new guy to make his own decisions on who is offered. Since I think it’s Hartline and he won’t be bringing anyone with him, I am inclined to believe it’s the latter.
And the question with that is...if true, why didn't Terry know and report that to Kraft to force him out?

Lincoln Riley name is suddenly popping up frequently. Not sure I would want him. Partly depends on what coaches are left at this point. Is it his agent trying to get more money from USC or is he really considering it.

I love how everyone thinks the portal is this magic recipe for success. As Saban said a few weeks ago, you can’t live in the portal and have long term success. The portal is beneficial to help booster a roster than needs a player here and there or add depth. Thinking you can assemble an entire roster of portal players and win gets you Colorado like results.

I just don’t see him as a good coach. He thinks his past reputation as a player will bring him success as a coach and it doesn’t work that way.
oh I agree. Not a fan at all but someone will take him and his personality.

To me this feels like Kraft pushed all his chips in on Rhule and the minute Nebraska fell apart and he couldn’t sell this to the fanbase this search fell apart from the jump. I think Kraft imagined a Lane Kiffin scenario where he poaches Rhule right before the playoffs. You’re telling me the plan was to have a giant head start on this search, let every P4 fill their spots before and not have a coach on national signing day? I didn’t want Rhule but to me it was always Rhule and when that didn’t happen you’re seeing it in real time.

They didn't decommit because their coaches didn't have anywhere to go and those coaches weren't encouraging said players coaches and recruits to do so a month before they were fired. Turns out other than Kiffin and Franklin those coaches weren't scumbags.

For goodness sakes Rhule was NEVER an option. Hartline was NEVER an option. Drink was NEVER an option. There is no mystery man! Also, there is now no homerun hire, which was a term never used by the admin.

When they went undefeated or the issues after when we realized he's just an awful coach?
He hit one year then the next couple were absolute duds. No roster continuity. These are rentals at best. It’s hit big miss big. Ask Colorado and Wesr Virginia. Even LSU took big swings in the portal under BK the first couple years.

I get that but unless they’re RS Freshman but Juniors and Seniors either don’t play, portal out, graduate or go to NFL and you’re left with this reliance on the portal.
You aren't though...for a couple years you bring in 10 guys maybe slightly more but most years you should be bringing in 8-10

3-9 will look really good by then.

😞
One good thing is that our schedule in 2026 is horrible. Joke teams OOC (including the absolutely ridiculous away game at Temple ) then a Big Ten schedule without tOSU, Oregon or Indiana - seems crazy to put them in that category but here we are - with the big games being Michigan, USC and Washington. Rutgers, Purdue, Maryland, Northwestern all on the schedule.

We could be pretty meh and still have a winning record.

Fair question. I personally believe Kraft has had his guy for at least the last month (I believe it’s Hartline). Yet Terry was clearly in audition mode up until this last week where his body language changed.

The timing of this plus the de-commits doesn’t necessarily lineup unless you take the position that Terry has been completely in the dark. But as a guy who is supposedly our lead recruiter, I’m not sure how you keep him in the dark with current commitments during this transition. Where he wouldn’t catch wind of what was happening sooner. So again, the timeline doesn’t necessarily match.
