Spot on. Did Coach34 make you put in the Robert E Lee reference so that the Rebels could understand it?

Not sure I agree 32 dive, I think our coaches have the freedom to spend whatever they need in the recruiting process. I'm don't think Mullen would put up with not being able to. I think our low recruiting budget is more due to how we recruit mostly within a 5 hour radius of Starkville. Due to that, our spending in recruiting is just low. Perhaps what you are trying to say is that we need to recruit more nationally, and I would agree with that. However, that decision would have to come from out coaching staff, and not just solved by us throwing in another 300,000 in the recruiting budget.

By looking at the comparative size of our recruiting budget, I assumed the increase of budget by such amount would give us the ability to "cast a larger net". So yes, I assumed our lack of prior national recruiting was constrained by budget, not much stated philosophy of the 5 Hour Ener... err... Radius.

I agree with your article

I too think Miss State needs to be willing to pay quality defensive and offensive coordinators higher salaries - something in the 500k range would be a start. The problem as I see it is that we placed all of our eggs in one basket: the head coach salary basket. Mullen is paid very, very well. Unfortunately the assistants are not paid well at all compared to SEC level. Dan would be well served to consider this. Maybe he needs to channel his inner Obama and share a little wealth. Seriously, you get what you pay for. Good assistants can make a head coach look good.

That's the thing, Mullen's salary and salary for assistants is not an either/or situation. There is money there. If we are going to go "all in" with football, stadium expansion, football facility etc. we need to have the personnel in place to compete in the SEC. I don't know who should be retained, who should be relieved (although I have an opinion like everyone else), but Dan and Scott better get this figured out as well.

Pretty good article there Todd. Couldnt agree more. But Dan is an aquired taste for an assistant. He'd have to 'click' with the person pretty well before they'd be effective. Otherwise, even if the money is there, you dont get the effect you need. I thought that Dan would be just as good coaching this year with Tyler as he was with Relf, but that just didnt turn about to be the case. Dan is much more comfortable in the spread-read option offense that Relf ran. Add Dak's passing ability and I think we get 2-3 quality years out of Dak and our offense without much of a hitch. I know this also means we are benching our most prolific passer ever, but for whatever reason we want to choose, we dont have the wr tools right now or the power running game to support him. We have to be able to use a dual threat qb that has good rb and wr options to create mismatches along the line of scrimages.

As far as defense goes, our DC is going to have to be able to fine a way to get a bit more 'chaotic' and disguise pressure. I think we also learned a lesson when we lost good cover safeties.

All in all, you are correct that money matters andwe need to attract a better brand of assistant. I just hope Dan returns to what he's best at. Next year with the same gameplans and scheeme will produce, at most, 6 wins.

Reminds me of that ol' Bear Bryant quote:

""But it's still a coach's game. Make no mistake. You
start at the top. If you don't have a good one at the top, you don't have a cut
dog's chance. If you do, the rest falls into place. You have to have good
assistants
, and a lot of things, but first you have to have the chairman of the
board."

I as a fan expect us to be able to get good assistant coaches if we are paying them as much as I am proposing. Saban is an ******* to work for. He gets good assistants yes because he wins, but because they pay well. I would suspect that the coaches that would consider us would be willing to look past that for the money.
