To tell you the truth, after seeing several of our recruits on the field this season versus some of the other top ranked Mississippi HS talent, I'm very excited about the guys that we have committed. Is the 2014 class stellar? No, but it is very very solid with good players at need positions. Mullen and his staff have shown an ability to judge and develop talent. If you spend too much time gazing at the stars, you miss what's happening here on Earth. This is a very good group for a small incoming class regardless of whether we get anyone else. A 6'4" 310 lb kid that can run a 4.8 40-yard dash is a real legit athlete. That means he has the physical tools. I doubt you can run a 4.8 now or in your prime. The thing about HS lineman on either side is that very few actually know or consistently use technique. They dominate HS by size and brute strength, but in college they have to be athletic and use more technique. You never know which young men have the internal fortitude and drive to learn their craft well enough to become starters in the SEC. I will also say that in many cases, the kids that don't develop aren't "misses" or screw ups or not talented, other circumstances such as injury, family issues, interest in academics, relationships affect their development. They can be great kids and good athletes but not make it to the top level for many reasons. That's why you see 4- and 5-star OL underperform. Do they have the physical tools? Yes, but other circumstances dictate their top end performance. Judging recruiting classes based solely on stars awarded by sportswriters and bloggers, many of which have not played collegiate football, is pure folly. Take the time to go to a few games, watch some game film yourself, and then make some judgements. I saw Rod Taylor play this year and he may develop into a great college OL, but in the game I personally observed, he was average…just bigger than everyone else. That doesn't mean we wouldn't want a guy with his size and athletic ability, but it does mean that judging talent is subjective…not objective or factual.
