Really not a bad hire under the circumstances. Their AD was struggling something fierce. Was about to call Clemson to see if assistant coaches were available.

Not sure why people think hiring assistants is bad. Almost like they have too much pride to not hire a proven head coach. Stupid, I say. Bob Stoops and Mark Richt agree with me.

Butch Jones followed Brian Kelly to both CMU and UC. Simply sustained his success. We'll see how he does building up a program, now.

Actually he almost totally restocked the roster when Kelley left for ND, and opened up recruiting in Memphis and Atlanta for UC, two areas they'd never broken into previously. Not to mention the fact he's considered among coaches to be one of the best overall program managers in the country.

But yea, I'm sure it's just Kelley.

Knoxville over Boulder!

Butch Jones from Cincy. Not a terrible hire

@GoVolsXtra: It's official: Tennessee Vols hire Butch Jones as football coach (via @govols247) http://t.co/OwSOPssLire.

He turned down 13.5 million and Boulder, CO to live in Knoxville, TN. I know both are rebuilding programs, but as a city Boulder wins every day of the week.

18mill > 13.5 million. Not to mention UT fball >>>>> CU.

Colorado's program has been neglected for the last decade. They need some serious facility upgrades to compete in the Pac12, and the school is already short on money.

Agree. I know CO hasn't been very good lately, but I would have gone that route. There are a lot of good coaches in the SEC right now and they can't all win. Might have a better chance in the PAC 12.

Tennessee is down, but they're in 100 times better shape than Colorado. That is the most pathetic excuse for a football program in any of the 5 major conferences. And there's not another one even close really.

So he's pissed that he now has JShort's editor? "Mike Aresco is the warm-hearted mentor you always wanted. He's the anthesis of the modern conference commissioner." "CIncinatti"

Isn't he the guy who left Cincinnati high and dry, undefeated, to play Florida in the Sugar (and get totally annihilated) and went straight to Notre Dame a couple years ago?

Tennessee probably made a pretty good hire and won't have to spend a relative ton of money to get him.

Except that Tennessee is an elite national football program and Colorado is not. But you're right ... Boulder is a nicer town than Knoxville. And if you like snow and cold weather, it's really nice. Maybe he doesn't.

That sucks for y'all. If he can come in and win your boy, D'Vinner. It is over in Memphis for y'all. He will have Adams working double time too.

And less reason to be. But I can understand their displeasure before. He should've at least coached the Sugar. They would have done better. He really screwed them.

It's the second one. He really is that toxic. And not just to major programs. The Clarion Ledger had an article about USM's coaching search earlier this week. It mentioned about 8 potential candidates. None of them were Bobby Petrino. He is almost unhireable by anyone.

Restocked it with what? I've seen Cincinnati play this year. The only SEC teams they would even have a chance to beat are Kentucky & Auburn. Even those would be close games. This guy got his *** kicked by a Derrick Dooley team with a losing record just last year. Tennessee will be looking for another new coach in 3 years.

Know it alls are quick to get fussy...

I'm sure he will do something way cooler than something the general public could think of to cheer up. Something really good and smug.

Looks like you got about as far as I did. No way you could make me read the rest of that, when those two were present so early.

You have no clue how far Colorado has fallen. UK and Auburn would've beat them by 3 TD's this year. My wife graduated from there and I keep up with their team. They are beyond awful.

The rebuilding job in Boulder is going to be a 5 or 6 year deal. They have 0 talent on that roster.

CU was an elite program too. CU now is UT 5 years into the future.

Both are historically significant programs neglected and run into the ground. It's a shame really.

Big difference between Colorado and Tennessee. Colorado was elite for about 15 years. But historically, they have not been anywhere near it. Tennessee has been elite for most of its history. Also, UT draws 100K+ for games. Colorado doesn't even draw half that many and didn't even when their teams were good. It's much harder for a school like Tennessee to fall as far, or stay down as long, as Colorado.

Sure I do, they were 1-11 this year. Yes it will take a lot of time and their administration should know that. TN won't be patient, they are expecting good things early. To each their own though. Jones picked TN so he must feel like you.
