Those Cult enablers can high tail back to Pennsyltucky .
Go RU !
You are insanely stupid. Especially when you say it's our Jersey Shore yet you have never been to Atlantic or Cape May County. Those two certainly are not your's as you have never seen them! You are a crazy old fool to argue about something you know zero about!!
I'm guessing you have a sign on your front lawn to get off my grass!! 🤣🤣

Avalon is loaded with PA residents. Just deal with facts and move on!
This! As a SJ resident, Atlantic county and Cape May county are inundated with Penn state fans and grads especially during the summertime with all the shoobies coming down and a lot of them owning shore homes. Nobody really cares about Rutgers in south Jersey

RU fans just have to accept that RU will never be popular here in Atlantic or cape may counties. It’s all Penn State. Hell my aunt and uncle are Penn state grads, lived in PA all their lives and just recently moved to North Wildwood. It’s what a lot of Penn state grads do; move to the Jersey shore down here.

I wouldn't go that far but it's definitely influenced heavily by Philly and there are a lot of philly transplants. Villanova is also followed in cbball.

It's not just a matter of Philly transplants. All of the local media in South Jersey are Philly media. Villanova, Temple, St. Joe's, Drexel and Penn are all treated as hometown teams. Rutgers isn't. So everyone in South Jersey, not just Philly transplants, is conditioned to see these teams as "theirs."

Yeah people don’t understand that there are more Temple fans, Penn, Drexel, Lasalle, St Joes, Villanova, and Penn state fans than there are RU fans. South Jersey residents don’t care about Rutgers really at all

Yes, I forgot the elephant in the room -- the Philadelphia media treat Penn State as their team, and of course that influences South Jerseyans.

Many shore towns in Cape May County?? No there isn't a lot of RU Flags down there. Even South Jersey people are Penn State fans because they get their sports from Philadelphia based stations.
Like I said, you obviously never been Avalon.
Who’s getting sports from “Philadelphia based stations ? What does that mean even mean ? Because some dude gives the Penn state store after the weather forecast.
I know plenty of Phillies and Phillies eagles fans that live closer to nyc than center city

That is really upsetting but from my anecdotal evidence, Penn State alums are more well off than RU alum and they are far more prouder of their school even after 40 years of child rape was discovered. That says more about our alumni base than theirs.

It means that when I turn on the Channel 10 news, the sports report is about Philadelphia teams. The "dude" gives the Penn State score and talks about what's happening with that team.. He does the same with the Phillies, etc. It means that when I open the Philadelphia Inquirer, the teams that it covers are Philadelphia teams. You may not be someone who watches local news or reads local newspapers, but there are plenty of people who still do one or the other. Even if they don't, they turn on their TV watch NBC Sports Philadelphia, which broadcasts and covers Philly teams and New York teams.

Yes, there are Phillies and Eagles fans who live closer to NYC than Center City. Similarly, there are Yankee and Giants fans who live closer to Center City than NYC. All the same, the demarcations between New York and Philly media mean that South Jersey has a lot more fans of Philly teams than NY teams, just as the rest of the state has more fans of NY teams than Philly teams.

I dislike saying this, but when I talk to alumni of both schools, I find that Penn State alums tend to have better things to say about their experience than Rutgers alums do.

So people become Penn state fans because of the local news ?
This makes no sense . And you’re wrong , lots of people are still not reading print newspapers . That industry is in shambles

Remember that South Jersey has no real media of its own. The local media is all Philly. The Philly media -and I made clear I'm not talking just about the newspapers -- treat the Philly teams and Penn State as the home teams. Rutgers is just one more opponent. Just come down to visit one of Philadelphia's many attractions and turn on the local TV. No matter what you may think, that has a real influence on people. I was never a Phillies or Eagles or 76ers fan until I moved to South Jersey, but since Philly coverage is all around me, I go along with it. People down here aren't Rutgers fans because they don't hear a word about Rutgers.

This is absolutely true. I grew up in Camden County and vacationed in Wildwood every year. I am not exaggerating. Until I was about 10 or 12, I never even knew Rutgers athletics existed. Seriously. Never heard of it.

Thanks for your support. To give credit to @Plum Street, there's more than media involved here. I live in Cherry Hill. If I want to see major league baseball, Philly is the most convenient place. So too with every other sport. As I got familiar with Philly teams, I became a fan. The media helped make me more familiar with Philly teams, and that made me more of a fan. I've moved around a fair amount, and I've adopted at least one local team every time. I lived in the Washington, D.C. area in 1983, and so I rooted for the Orioles against the Phillies in the World Series. But moving to Philly made me a Phillies fan.

There is an additional problem -- even now, there are New Jerseyans who feel little attachment to Rutgers; some aren't even sure if it's small or large.

Lol. I know south jersey stations covers Philly sports . I am saying people don’t make decisions on college footballl teams based on their local newscast. Otherwise, you would be a Penn state fan.

Wow. You are that stupid. A South Jersey person growing up got to see Penn State every Saturday and never a Rutgers game.
Why would I be Penn State fan? I grew up in NJ. Played golf and football at Rutgers. Hate Penn State! But jealous as well as they have multiple state support.
If people in South Jersey don't see Rutgers but see Penn State all the the time who do you think they are going to root for!
The stupidity on this thread is absolutely insane!

Long gone are the days of all you can watch is the 330 ABC game with Keith Jackson

By your logic , everyone should be Notre Dame fans because of theNBC deal

The latter half of this thread is our annual time warp to circa 2001 and the old rutgersfan.com...the So. Jersey/Philly fan and media coverage discussion is a ground that is mercilessly trampled every year.

Tradition of success probably helped a lot, but does it really matter? South Jersey is Penn State Country, though surprisingly, we’ve done a pretty good job recruiting there.

It matters in this sense: as @Plum Street mentioned, Penn State attracts fans because of its long tradition of success. People like rooting for winners. If we become successful, and if success is the key to attracting fans, perhaps we'll attract fans down here the way Penn State does. But it will be a struggle because we're not in the media market here.
