It matters in this sense: as @Plum Street mentioned, Penn State attracts fans because of its long tradition of success. People like rooting for winners. If we become successful, and if success is the key to attracting fans, perhaps we'll attract fans down here the way Penn State does. But it will be a struggle because we're not in the media market here.
Definitely being a great program in the area is what it’s all about. I mean Penn state had guys like Franco Harris and Shane Conlon. Meanwhile , rutgers had whitebus lol
Who would you root for ??

Yeah people don’t understand that there are more Temple fans, Penn, Drexel, Lasalle, St Joes, Villanova, and Penn state fans than there are RU fans. South Jersey residents don’t care about Rutgers really at all
There's a town called Vineland who might disagree with you. In fact, they just held a parade for their hometown hero, Isiah Pacheco.

That is really upsetting but from my anecdotal evidence, Penn State alums are more well off than RU alum and they are far more prouder of their school even after 40 years of child rape was discovered. That says more about our alumni base than theirs.
Maybe it means their minds are brain washed and much more twisted than ours'.

Yes, but wouldn't you agree that was based on his contribution to the Chiefs' Super Bowl victory much more than on his Rutgers days? If he had gone to Penn State, then had the same year with the Chiefs, don't you think he would have gotten the same parade?

I live five mins from Vineland…one town and maybe Egg Harbor City with the Melton brothers but that’s it. Not many towns in Atlantic or Cape May County care about Rutgers sports.

The response was aimed at "south Jersey residents don't care about Rutgers". Of course it's because he won a SB with the Chiefs, but I bet plenty in Vineland were rooting their asses for Pops while he was at Rutgers and thus cared about the team. ,

LOL!! $135 million from the boosters to buy college athletes???

No.
$135 million from boosters to fund the AD.
Coaches, facilities, recruiting trips.
Athletes get none of that money
$0.0

Somehow this is an acceptable uneven playing field.
But if the money went towards athletes, it's the downfall of society.

Many shore towns in Cape May County?? No there isn't a lot of RU Flags down there. Even South Jersey people are Penn State fans because they get their sports from Philadelphia based stations.
Like I said, you obviously never been Avalon.
I had to laugh when I read that. Cape May especially is Penn State East... Every single block you will see a Penn State flag hanging from a balcony or flagpost. every block!

Everything from Princeton, down South is Penn State Country. Even Princeton Health is affiliated with Penn Medicine.

Beach areas like Belmar, Deal, Lavalette, and Ortley Beach, hardly have any Rutgers flags.

What we need is for people to write $1000 NIL Checks. That really is the only thing that is going to make a difference.
You do realize that Penn State and Penn Medicine are two completely different entities right? Penn Medicine is an entity of UPenn, a fellow Ivy league school so it makes perfect sense to why princeton would be affiliated. UPenn and Penn State are not even close to the same thing Al...

Yes, Penn and Penn State are not the same thing. . . although @rutgersal is hardly the only one who confuses them. But is Princeton Medicine affiliated with Princeton as you seem to suggest? Remember that Princeton doesn't have a medical school.

Princeton Health has nothing to do with Princeton University. Two complete separate entities. Penn Medicine is apart of the University of Pennsylvania and does not have a relationship with Penn State.

Just pointing out that everything from Princeton down South is Philly/PA influenced.

Lol. I know south jersey stations covers Philly sports . I am saying people don’t make decisions on college footballl teams based on their local newscast. Otherwise, you would be a Penn state fan.

Shortbus may have staying power!!

So why do multiple neighbors of mine in Marlton who have no affiliation with Penn State consider themselves Penn State fans?

You’re clueless if you think that Philly outlets (Local News, NBC Sports Philly, Local radio) that cover Penn State as the hometown team while also not covering Rutgers doesn’t have an impact on the casual South Jersey sports fan. These casual fans are followers and will root/watch for the hometown team that gets the coverage.

It also helps that Penn state football wins and puts an entertaining product on the field (compared to Rutgers football).

Yea it’s pretty sickening.

I’m sure there are tons of RU Alumni that own property up and down the NJ coast (especially Central NJ) but our alums don’t have the same level of pride unfortunately.

It is not, however there's a very strong correlation as to why Penn Medicine has a branch their. By fellow Ivy League affiliation they have access to the resources and materials of Princeton, the Same way Rutgers has access with fellow Big 10 schools.

My whole point to the response was Al following up how everything south of Princeton is Penn State country and Penn Medicine being in Princeton... What does Penn Medicine have to do with "Penn State Country"? I'm serious here, what's the correlation? I suspect Al just assumed that Penn Medicine was some kind of affiliation to Penn State in making his argument, otherwise he never would have brought it up

Ben Franklin is said to have called New Jersey "a barrel tapped at both ends." There is a tendency for those "up North" to ignore the Philly tap and to think of New Jersey as just one big suburb of NYC. (When I dated NYC women through services like match.com, I had a terrible time convincing them that Cherry Hill was over two hours away.) Philly has a huge gravitational pull down here just as much as NYC does in the North. Really NJ is two separate states. The result is that Rutgers has little presence down here.

Why don’t you ask these “multiple” neighbors? I didn’t know you lived in a housing project

I don’t need to ask them. I know why.

Because they’re a bunch of followers and are easily influenced.

You have zero clue on this topic (and many others it seems as well).
You said you have “multiple “ neighbors . It’d fair to ask what you’re living situation is after that

Do you resort to being an immature loser when you realize you’re wrong?
How am I wrong ?
And I am not restoring to anything but asking you about the multiple neighbor comment that you made . You made some good points.
How do you have multiple neighbors?

Yes I have multiple people that live near me.

You’re a major dork. I forgot you’re the guy who thinks it’s funny/cool to refer to himself in third person.

Making sense now.
If you have “multiple” neighbors In Marlton, I would love to meet up with you at a hoops game

Just got back from Cape May and sadly there were a lot of Penn State and Nova flags. I did see a few people with Rutgers hats but not a lot of representation of Rutgers. Pride in their school is not a Rutgers strong point
