Not a big deal, very much replaceable and ultimately, not that surprising, given the current landscape of college basketball.

The RU roster needs to play a faster and quicker version of basketball, that can push the ball and get shots in transition. Griffiths is really now properly slotted as the starting SG or 2G and we don't have to have him anywhere near the 4 spot.

Yea the kid was our best shooter by far on a team that struggled offensively and won multiple games for us with game winning shots at the buzzer.

2 years from now this isn’t a big deal.

Next year - this will hurt.

I agree that we shouldn't be surprised by anything these days
Bright side - gives us a chance to get more athletic and get a defensive wing in the portal that wouldn't have considered us with Cam in the picture
Down side is we're unlikely to find another shooter of his caliber

Hard to figure out his reasoning - maybe Cam knows something about Cliff that we don't?
I can't imagine him being a more important part of the offense at any good high major.
He's leaving for NIL money elsewhere, nothing to do with Cliff

The current landscape of college basketball (NIL and portal) is really putting a hit on my enjoyment of the sport

I’m not gonna predict the long term impact - maybe the younger folks like this “free agency world” we are in right now - but personally I hate it

I wish we could know all the numbers. How much NIL money is on the team now? What is Spencer getting? Who are the biggest donors and what are they putting up? What does it cost to get a top recruit? Is it a one year agreement? The fact this all happens in the shadows is so, so bad for college sports.

Wish him well. Great half a season for us.

Many of us are monthly members of our collective...we have big donors buying kids like Ace. But this unfettered endless free agency is absurd. If kids want to get paid, let's draw up some contracts.
Many of us are but the vast majority do nothing but post on a message board and mostly to complain.

Replaceable? Hmm.

We just lost our only legit shooter on a horrible offensive team. He isn’t athletic, but is deceptive defensively and is a very smart player. Easily the worst loss we could have had other than Cliff.

Tbh, its hard to blame the kids. It shouldve never gotten to this. If someone offers a 22 year old $250K (random number, no inside info) to dribble a basketball for 4 months, its hard to turn down.

TBH, if youre a good player why arent you entering the portal every off season, fielding offer$ and then going back to your program and say, “match or im out”. They match, you stay, they wont, you go.
Agree 100%. It's actually the most rational move a player can make. It's clearly a business, and this is a business decision, and it's entirely logical that he would do it.

There's literally nothing you won't attempt to spin, Greg. It's.a crushing blow no matter for any NCAA hopes for the upcoming season no matter how many words you'll type about it to dismiss its significance.

It's a basketball evaluation, we have guards and a Top 20/40 shooting guard arriving....we have a Top 200 incoming guard in JaMicheal Davis and have an emerging sophomore in Derek Simpson.....we also have Noah Fernandes......and I assume, Paul Mulcahy is back. That's 6 guards if you had Spencer.....why is this surprising??

The basketball evaluation says we have an adequate or better shooter/player in Griffiths. Are you saying Griffiths is not a good shooter or cannot play the 2G position?

One of the more intriguing “where does he land” transfers of the portal season imo.

I think if we polled the board it would be a wide range of programs.

There's a big difference between a true freshman and a red shirt senior...right? One was playing in high school gyms in 2023, and one was hitting game winning threes at #1 Purdue. I would assume that's a part of the evaluation

We are saying he is a FRESHMAN. He may not be ready to start on Day 1. We are a NCAA team with Griffiths and Spencer (assuming Cliff returns), , and an NIT team otherwise.

Highly disagree.
For once we were going to put 2 legitimate shooters on the floor. Now we are not.

Apparently ed cooley was guaranteed around $2.5-3mill a year in pay for play payroll with GTown.

Sad but true. And this won’t help Rutgers.

Arriving. They won't adjust to college play overnight. Cam is a proven commodity and a very good player. It's a big, big loss. Stop the nonsense.

This blows and as big of a fan to Rutgers I am really rethinking my long term plan of wanting to attend live to games anymore. NIL is destroying my interest and I rather watch from my TV saving 5 figured every year than watch what’s going on.
No loyalty to a school anymore and to me while I don’t fault the players you just can’t get attached to them anymore. It has nothing tk with the school on their jersey anymore.

We have potentially 2 of the top 5 high school kids coming in 12 months. Stay the course. This is just a rough part of the current reality.

If this happened two months ago- maybe.
But it’s slim pickings right now. Not a good take Hawk.

You're not paying attention, with Mulcahy back, there's 6 guards with Spencer. There's no room for 6 guards.

The notion that we are without a shooting guard is absurd. If you told me Griffiths wasn't coming in, then I would be concerned.

I wouldn't pay Spencer big money to stay, he's not more valuable than Griffiths, or other guards like Fernandes, Simpson.

The roster needs a 4/5, not asking Mulcahy or Griffiths to play the 4, because Spencer is your 1 position player, who can't play the PG or isn't a combo guard.

Everyone is saying NIL BUT - the portal/not having to sit out a year AND the COVID year are more important
There sare so many transfers last year and this year because the portal is still new and there are so many Grad transfers because of the COVID year.

Once the COVID year works itself through, we'll see fewer and fewer transfers and it will level out at half or less what we've seen the last two years - once they only get 1 for "free" until they graduate and don't get the extra year.

Our mods confirmed Ace Bailey had multiple million dollar NIL offers before committing to RU. So now you know.

We should still be good for a little while. Especially if we get Harper for a year. After that, I fear the “haves” will further separate themselves from the “have nots”. The key now is for Pike to try to find a replacement for Cam for next season sifting through the slim pickins. Not confident. UNC’s Love is available :) I believe but if we didn’t have enough for Cam, we certainly won’t have enough for him.

I have to say I am shocked. The way the team looked to be constructed he should have had a very big year next year. He no longer needed to bring the ball up, and with additional shooters on the floor, other teams would no longer focus on him the way they did last year, which should have opened up a lot of shots for him. Maybe we can still get him to come back.

So much for all the Paul, Simpson and Gavin arguments and predictions we all had.
Both Paul and Gavin are going to get major minutes and Simpson will likely play more as well.
