Norries 4th and 6 call

Curious everyones initial thoughts when Norries had the O out there for 4th and 6 call. Honestly, I didn't agree with it at the time. I would have pinned them back at the 10 yd line and let the D go to work.

Hell of a call by Norries and a great playcall. Made me think of major league with a twist , " Norries, you have marbles!"

I thought it was gutsy and the right call. The easy call was to punt but he was playing to win. We needed to sustain something there as msu had run about 35 more plays than ru.

It was a good decision. He was coaching to win the game. The opposite of what we saw at PSU.

Was all for it. Glad to see some aggressive play calling and with the way our D had stepped up, being past mid field, and not having the greatest punts last night definitely thought it was the right call.

Most likely I would have punted as there was over 7 minutes left. But I give Coach W a lot of credit for playing to win.

It was absolutely the right call. Every statistical analysis shows that coaches are too conservative on 4th down and should go for it rather than punt way more often than they do. A punt is essentially a turnover. If Laviano had thrown the ball on that 4th down play, and it was picked off 20 yards downfield, everyone would be upset about the turnover. But that is exactly what a punt is. Sure, a punt might have pinned MSU inside the 10 yard line, but much more likely they would have had the ball near the 25 .... exactly the same as a 20-yard pass that was picked off.

I thought it was the right call at the time. Our offense had their D on their heels on that drive. We seemed to finally hit our groove had no problem with the call either way it went. The problem I have is if you knew you were going to go for it on fourth down that third and 5 play was a bad call.

Not even a question... IT WAS THE RIGHT CALL TO GO FOR IT!

First, it sends a message to our offense and our team that WE ARE PLAYING TO WIN! This is a positive going forward so that the mindset in that locker room is aggressive and not so reserved.

Second, our defense isn't the defense we have become accustomed to over the past decade (even though I believe it will become one of those defenses over the next 2 years with Austin becoming a legit top cornerback in the nation). We know that we are young and inexperienced so I definitely think it was smart to rely on the offense rather than the defense to make a big play.

I LOVED THAT CALL! When you're the underdog or have confidence in your team, you play to win. I believe if Flood is coaching that moment, he punts.

I didn't like the call at first either and usually I am a guy that doesn't like to see things played conservative. I just thought that at 7 and half minutes is too much time and if you miss it the game is over. Maybe at 4 and half I would definitely go for it. The defense seemed to be playing well so pinning them back might not be a bad option. Perhaps the coaching staff sensed the D was tiring which they looked like on that last drive. Was Norries asked that question in the post game presser

Parcells always used to go for more 4th downs than many (at that time). Seemed like he made most of them.

This. Always go for it here. Good coaches have figured this out.

For all his faults, Flood seems to do a pretty good job with the 4th down decisions.

Everyone in my section wanted to punt ... except my 18-year-old son, who wanted RU to go for it ... and he told us all exactly what play RU should run, and what combination of patterns RU's receivers should run. And the play run was exactly the way my son wanted ... and the ball went exactly where he predicted it would go, to the underneath receiver he thought was likely to be open.

Good to see all that PS4 Madden gaming he does paid off, LOL!

I absolutely thought we needed to go for it there, although my play idea was not what we ran. I was thinking roll Laviano out for a pass/run option with Carroo going long and a TE dragging underneath to give him two targets, or the ability to run for the 1st.

Of course, what we ran worked out well too.

Totally endorsed the move at that time. If we had a trusty punter and the '06 defense, maybe I'd punt, but having started with our backs to the end zone and matriculating the ball downfield well, I think it was absolutely the right call for a team looking to win and not settle.

Personally, I would have went with the QB spike there, but can understand he was saving it for a late game 4th down situation.

I actually think this play call was indicative of the way Flood calls games as well. Flood has shown a willingness to make very gutsy calls, but I nearly always think they are called at the wrong time. I put this in that category, even though it worked.
