There has never been a time when this many big jobs were open, and the season is barely half over. There might be another 3 or so added before its done. Wish I was a coach. Market rate is about to pop.

Agree, but, will it be any different next year? Also we CAN'T let The Terps get too much of a head start on us IMHO.
Can't remember a year when so many prominent coaches either resigned or were fired mid-year. It's the resignations that have me a bit puzzled. Things aren't going Spurrier's way, so he quits, or is there something else in this story (maybe personal or family issue?).?
Yes and no. We would not likely be competing with programs like USC or Miami--or UCF--for a coach so their situations kind of don't affect us.

Meh. More than enough coaches out there at our price point. Plus we ain't interviewing the same guys as USC and most likely USc. We are a better job than UCF and on par with Miami and Maryland. We know Maryland says they will spend crazy money but let's see what happens there.
You really think Oregon will fire their coach a year removed from playing for the title? And Auburn 2 years removed from the same? They'll both get another year.

a good AD can always find a coach. maybe the candidate doesn't come piping hot with hype, but sometimes that's a good thing.
likewise, you don't make a move this year and perhaps your best candidate who would actually consider RU is off the table in Schiano.

I don't think Auburn and Oregon are making any changes despite their struggles this year.
UVA for sure is possible and maybe Purdue as well. Indiana is another one too if Wilson doesn't make a bowl. Syracuse too. VT if Beamer retires but they may elevate Bud Foster.
Virginia for sure but think Hazel gets one more year. If we keep Flood I'd throw a good chunk of change and London for DC

There's new, young coaches making there marks out there. People here often tend to think of older, notorious retreads as the only options
I've liked Herman for for a few years and Fuente was my top name this year. If there is so much competition and I have to reach further down into my pretend AD bag.
These aren't my favorite names as of now but they could have been given more time. If you have to make the hire now then after the two above I'd go with one of vkj91's faves in Dino Babers and Doug Meacham the TCU OC.
Meacham has done well with offenses where ever he has been in his career and he's done it with different qbs too. Babers has done well with different qbs at his two stops as HC as well. I would like to see it over more time from both of them but if you don't have a choice I'd guess those would be my next two choices after the top 2.
One thing though is absolutely imperative with both of them and any spread coach frankly. They must bring in a quality DC with them. Mind you, don't assume throwing money at the problem automatically solves it. Muschamp in his first year at Auburn hasn't improved their defense much and he got paid a ton. It may happen over time but it certainly didn't happen right away. Have to be fair and give him time though.
I wouldn't want Babers to bring his DC with him, I'd probably be open to someone from the TCU staff if Meacham wanted that considering Patterson's previous track record on defense. Whatever it is, it has to be someone who can create a mediocre defense. I like the spread but I also understand and accept that a weaker defense is a likely byproduct of using it.
I'm okay with a defense ranked in the top 50-65 area paired with around a top 15 offense. I think if you have that you're likely to land up in a good spot more times than not. It can't be a defense ranked in the 80+ range or eventually it'll catch up to you or you'll just end up being like Indiana. I don't need top 25 defense just give me mediocre with that top offense and I'm satisfied so that would absolute key for these spread coaches.

Give me Tom Hermann as our coach. Already has a top 25 team in his first year and knows the OSU offense really well. I think he would do great in the B1G and would get recruits. Also would give us 2 Hermanns..haha
Because this year is an anomalie. I don't think there has ever been this many big openings.
We will be away ahead by this time next year.

Until we can get a competitive budget to hire middle of the pack assistants and coordinators corrected for cost of living, I don't think it makes sense to make the move. I'd like to see us hire a DC in the meantime that can run a top 20 defense.
That's the administrations strategy minus some white knight coming in. It's all about the subsidy. No real moves are getting made until we are getting paid.

Didn't half the Pac 12 fire their coaches a couple years ago when they got the huge tv contract? With Flood scheduled to get a raise to $1.6 mm next year, keeping him isn't exactly cheap anymore.
