I thought I would revisit this since we are almost complete with the season. I had the oppurtunity to see a lot of area teams this season and there are some teams that will represent the area well in the playoffs. Please add your thoughts below.
1. Mt. Airy - obvisouly number one. They have completely dominated their competition this season. Explosive offense and suffocating defense. Well balanced offense and one of the best coaches teams in the area if not the best. This team is a legitimate state title contender in both 1A and 1AA. The Bears are hungry.
2. Wilkes Central - I'm aware they lost to Surry Central by one point early in the year but this is opinionated and I can say I doubt they would lose that game again with confidence. They changed their defensive scheme and this team is probably the most balanced in the area led by a great sophomore QB with many weapons to deliver the ball too. Parsons was the most exciting player I've seen.
3. East Wilkes - again, I know they also lost to Surry Central by one to start the year but a lot has changed. I believe they had 6 turnovers that game. East Wilkes is exterenley well coached and super versitale in their offensive attack. You don't see a lot of teams throw out of the triple option but they do and do it well. Their defense is sound, fundamental and aggressive. They don't beat themselves.
4. Surry Central - the Golden Eagles have improved tremendously since last season. They are loaded with seniors and experience and a coach that's been there forever. I think another game with Mt Airy would be much closer if they played again. They may make some noise in the playoffs.
5. West Stokes - Can't leave WS out. Didn't get a chance to see them but I feel confident placing them here. I know they have a great coach and contuity with their staff and system. Solid program with a young team. Wildcat fans should be excited for the future.
6. North Wilkes - this team has probably improved more than anyone this season. They have a bruising tailback that has ran for a gazillion yards but have now made some changes and opened their "O" up a little bit more with some young sophomores including Ethan Brown. People forget that NW is young and will continue to improve. Coach Chipman has them headed in the right direction.
7. East Surry - I don't think anyone expected to ES to replicate last seasons mark with the mount of graduations they had but as always they are still a solid team. Coach Diamond continues to show why he is one of the best to do it. They have a big game this Friday and you never know what could happen when those 2 get together. Another young team that continues to improve.
8. North Surry - they Greyhounds have been in every game they lost this season. They are much better than their record indicates. They are led by one of the best players in the area in Avery Johnson who is a fantasist of and exciting QB.
9. West Wilkes - Never would of thought I would of seen a day when all four Wilkes County schools have winning records but here they are. West is a solid team with a balanced offense and strong on the o and d lines. They are seanior laden but experience goes a long way. They have a big game Friday as well with an oppurtunity to make a statement.
10(a). Alleghany - the Trojans started off the year strong but hit a speed bump once conference play started. They are well coached and can play with you if you let them hang around ala. Wilkes Central game. A young team with some good talent.
10(b). Forbush - Coach Johnson does a great job with the Falcons but they just aren't as talented as some of the other teams in the area. They play in a tough conference with Carver, West Stokes, SC and NS. I think they would have a much better record in the MVAC.
