I thought I would revisit this since we are almost complete with the season. I had the oppurtunity to see a lot of area teams this season and there are some teams that will represent the area well in the playoffs. Please add your thoughts below.

1. Mt. Airy - obvisouly number one. They have completely dominated their competition this season. Explosive offense and suffocating defense. Well balanced offense and one of the best coaches teams in the area if not the best. This team is a legitimate state title contender in both 1A and 1AA. The Bears are hungry.

2. Wilkes Central - I'm aware they lost to Surry Central by one point early in the year but this is opinionated and I can say I doubt they would lose that game again with confidence. They changed their defensive scheme and this team is probably the most balanced in the area led by a great sophomore QB with many weapons to deliver the ball too. Parsons was the most exciting player I've seen.

3. East Wilkes - again, I know they also lost to Surry Central by one to start the year but a lot has changed. I believe they had 6 turnovers that game. East Wilkes is exterenley well coached and super versitale in their offensive attack. You don't see a lot of teams throw out of the triple option but they do and do it well. Their defense is sound, fundamental and aggressive. They don't beat themselves.

4. Surry Central - the Golden Eagles have improved tremendously since last season. They are loaded with seniors and experience and a coach that's been there forever. I think another game with Mt Airy would be much closer if they played again. They may make some noise in the playoffs.

5. West Stokes - Can't leave WS out. Didn't get a chance to see them but I feel confident placing them here. I know they have a great coach and contuity with their staff and system. Solid program with a young team. Wildcat fans should be excited for the future.

6. North Wilkes - this team has probably improved more than anyone this season. They have a bruising tailback that has ran for a gazillion yards but have now made some changes and opened their "O" up a little bit more with some young sophomores including Ethan Brown. People forget that NW is young and will continue to improve. Coach Chipman has them headed in the right direction.

7. East Surry - I don't think anyone expected to ES to replicate last seasons mark with the mount of graduations they had but as always they are still a solid team. Coach Diamond continues to show why he is one of the best to do it. They have a big game this Friday and you never know what could happen when those 2 get together. Another young team that continues to improve.

8. North Surry - they Greyhounds have been in every game they lost this season. They are much better than their record indicates. They are led by one of the best players in the area in Avery Johnson who is a fantasist of and exciting QB.

9. West Wilkes - Never would of thought I would of seen a day when all four Wilkes County schools have winning records but here they are. West is a solid team with a balanced offense and strong on the o and d lines. They are seanior laden but experience goes a long way. They have a big game Friday as well with an oppurtunity to make a statement.

10(a). Alleghany - the Trojans started off the year strong but hit a speed bump once conference play started. They are well coached and can play with you if you let them hang around ala. Wilkes Central game. A young team with some good talent.

10(b). Forbush - Coach Johnson does a great job with the Falcons but they just aren't as talented as some of the other teams in the area. They play in a tough conference with Carver, West Stokes, SC and NS. I think they would have a much better record in the MVAC.

Pretty good assessment. I would put Surry Central at #2 due to the fact that they beat your current 2 and 3 head to head and are also conference champions. As far as East Surry goes, last year was a great group of kids and the team was senior heavy. This years team is very young. I believe we will return 10 starters on defense next season and 9 starters on offense, so the future is bright. For our team to be potentially 8-3 or at worse 7-4 after the end of the regular season is a true testament to the quality of kids we have and the job our coaches have done coaching them up. I love the fact that a 7-4 or 8-3 season for East is a down year when the majority of the teams would love to have a down year with that record.

I don't know what you consider NW, but I think Walkertown is underrated. I guess you are not including teams near Winston-Salem, but West Stokes is on your list. Walkertown is only about a half hour from several of these teams. They are due north of Winston-Salem and due south of North and South Stokes. I feel Walkertown is better than several of these teams. They are not finished by any stretch of the imagination.

I also know we don't talk about Watauga (7-3 - 4A) since they are the only true northwest school in the Northwest 3A/4A conference and all their opponents are to the south. If you use Highway 421 as the southern border for consideration, then Forbush and the Wilkesboro schools are on the southern edge of the area and Watauga (Boone) is also on the 421 corridor and by the map it is north of Wilkesboro and definitely west of all of us. According to the Max Preps Power rankings, they would be #1 in the Northwest.

The reason I put WC and EW above SC was personal opinion. WC lost at Surry Central by one point and they were without one of the best athletes in the area in Tyler Boles. Today I think WC wins that game especially on a neutral field.

After last night I would move SC above East Wilkes and also move East Surry up.

Not including Forsyth Schoosl. They are certainly Piedmont and not Northwest - even considered leaving Stokes schools out of it but they are traditionally in these conferences. As for Watauga, they are 4A. They should be miles ahead and better than every school in the area. I'm not including them.

After last night I would rank the schools as following:

1A: MA
1B: Wilkes Central
2: Surry Central
3: West Stokes
4. East Surry
5: West Wilkes
6: East Wilkes
7: North Wilkes
8: North Surry
9: Ashe
9: Forbush
10: Starmount
