OFF Topic, but am I the only one lost on this Superbowl halftime show?

What would you do differently? .. It's a game played by 20-30 year old players and classic rock bands are just too old to perform.

You can call last nights event "rap".. but in reality, it's "pop". Those acts were the biggest names for anyone who is 20 to 50 years old. I'm sorry that the 60+ crowd "didn't get it".
So if you don’t like something you “didn’t get it”? OK. LOL. That’s the sheep mentality. You’ve got to like this or you’re just don’t get it and you’re out of touch? Do you really not realize how blatantly ignorant that is?

And I’m not in the 60+ crowd.

I couldn't tell you who played the halftime show last year. But, that was one I will never forget. Best halftime show IMO.

I loved the halftime show. That's what it should be, hyper popular artists with songs the vast majority of people know the words to. I had all of those songs on burnt CD's written in sharpie in high school and college. Not sure anything will be better than the Prince show in the rain. But this was as close as they've gotten in a long time.

It's more so that you "didn't get" the fact that the working world.. aka 20-50 year olds, grew up with this music.

The gall to sit there in retirement age and balk at the music. I don't care if you don't like it, just understand that your age group doesn't matter as much as you think.

Yeah, we have the party of Christians that idolize a man who has cheated on every wife he has ever had and was caught in 4K talking about just grabbing women by the ***** with no consent.

oh, you meant the halftime show. Totally not racist.
I'm surprised it took 34 posts before somebody made this about racism, and Trump. This is how we have been divided, if someone disagrees, about anything, it's racism. Before the 34th post it was just about individual taste.

I enjoyed Snoop Dre and Eminem. 50 is a decent rapper, but he's nowhere near that level. Mary J is a legend, but with 5 rap artists out there why didn't they bring in a female rap artist as there are some to choose from. She didn't belong up there because of this not because she isn't extremely talented. Wtf is a Kendrick Lamar. Not a fan.

Lol what? Why?

Maybe this is the perfect example of why no one will ever agree with the halftime show.

Bruno Mars is safe pick like Michael Jackson was.. you know, before he touched kids.
You are correct, you can’t please everyone. That said, I can’t name you one single Bruno Mars song. I have no idea what he does. He was playing drums in the SB one year so he is a drummer I suppose?

You have no idea of my age group for one. And, I don’t care who did or didn’t like the show. You’re missing the entire point, which is simply that not liking it doesn’t mean anything other than you just didn’t like it. You and a few others are trying to pigeon hole people for simply having different musical tastes. The thread proves it with the stupid catch phrases of “out of touch”, “don’t get it”, and “old white guy”. The fact that you can’t see it for what it is says it all.

I guarantee you if you listened to his hits, you'd know them.

He's just a pop music guy. Plays catchy stuff that almost everyone enjoys. I've never purchased an album or even have one of his songs on a Spotify playlist.. but I know he's someone that almost everyone loves. And I recall that his 2014 halftime show was superb.

You should give him a listen. Not really usually my style of music, but he is exceptionally talented. Definitely worth expanding your musical tastes- in his case anyway

I don't care about the people who "don't like it".. thats fine. But there are plenty of people who turned it off, walked out of the room, and thought it should have been "their" music.

Lot of entitlement going around in society. You guys can have Fleetwood Mac next year.. don't worry.

Good lookin out. I’m a pretty open minded guy (modern country non withstanding). I actually worked in the music/entertainment industry for about a decade so appreciate talent and the production process.

Old White People and People with no teeth: What kind of garbage was that?
Middle Age People with College Education: I think that was the "bomb," or what ever the kids are calling it today.
Young People: That was bangin' sick. GOAT show ever!

Absolutely freaking right. Modern country is the worst **** to ever happen to music. It’s worse than disco was. Modern country artists are basically grifters (except for Tyler,cp, and sturgill).

Don’t forget about modern country’s love for hip hop drum tracks and country bros spitting ****** rap verses where they rhyme about bud light and trucks.

Of all genres, country has devolved the most over the last 25 years outside of the traditionalists you listed.

I can answer for me.

Bruno Mars is as mainstream vanilla pop as it gets and that’s not my cup of tea. I am a metal/rap guy by choice, but understand my preferred genres are too rough around the edges for the masses to enjoy, especially on a national stage.

I didn’t care for Bruno’s halftime show, but i also didn’t start a thread on a message board to let everyone know. I just went on with my day and tried to keep my opinion to myself so the people who did like could enjoy it without some detractor shitting all over it.

You probably are correct that a PG mainstream pop act is the safest bet to appeal to the most people, although it could be argued that last night’s performers was a mainstream as rap can get. The set list was very PG in comparison to the artists’ respective catalogs.

Sure. I mean, I'm a math-rock/post-hardcore/rap fan. No one in my top50 most played artists will ever sniff the SuperBowl stage. But I can still appreciate the wide range of music that someone like Bruno Mars can hit. It's not that, I, personally, want to have him there. I just think it satisfies the masses.

I enjoyed last nights show, though. I thought they did a good job, kept it clean, no issues aside from 50 cent turning into a chunker...

A truly horrible take on this topic. Especially when you choose to drag race into it. The discussion is about music and talent and what passes for entertainment.
And you aren't the one who gets to decide what is music, takes talent, and passes as entertainment. To insinuate that rap music doesn't take talent is just ignorant. It's the most lyrically dense genre of music out there and many rappers have the largest vocabularies of artists of any genres. The songs are often times complicated stories that rely on similes and metaphors while maintain complicated rhyme schemes throughout.

The producers are nothing less than musical historians who spend hours trying to find the perfect sample and weave multiple samples together to create a great beat. And before you start carrying on about how beats are just stolen music, Led Zeppelin's whole career was built on borrowing without credit and tweaking blues standards.

I liked it. I’d really like to see the closed captioning from it because I think Snoop invented some new words to keep from dropping some mf’s.

I do think that's partially true but not getting something shouldn't be an insult. Part of the reason people love what they do is because it just clicks with them or they really relate to it. There is a lot of music or art out there that I don't get and that's fine.

The issue is people who "don't get it" dismissing the music as talentless trash that isn't really music. Even if you don't get something you should be able to appreciate the art for what it is and acknowledge the talent it takes to make it.

I don’t play guitar, but that guitar player did not seem to be doing much. Was he playing?
I believe technically all the music for any halftime show is almost always prerecorded because the NFL is so controlling about the show. But the beats last night did have a live music competent to them, but it probably was prerecorded like they all are. Just like in 2014 when all the Chili Peppers instrumentals were prerecorded.

Speaking of the Chilli Peppers, heard a new song and started laughing. I like the Peppers, but this song was crap.

I’ve been a music junkie since my early teens, so nigh on 50 years now. Nothing I saw or heard last night would I call music.

If you think they are talented, that’s fine, and I’ll take your word for it. If you found it entertaining, also fine. But to call it music because the person talking into the mic has a big vocabulary, and the producers that mixed the sound on a laptop are great historians, makes me chuckle.

And I already know all about Led Zeppelin and all their borrowed (I call it stolen) Blues lyrics, riffs, and sometimes entire songs. But they played music on musical instruments. And they were very, very good at it.

I had to laugh about 50, but not too loud. Because I’m much bigger than I was in 2003 and I’m not talking about added muscle.
