I remember some people saying let's just let this play out before we consider McMullen gone. Did McMullen literally lie right to Riley? Really, you're gonna say something like that?
If you go and look at the associated press release from 04/09/16 it actually gives a clue as to the likely scenario (see a copy of the press release below). Why would Riley need to speak with McMullen in the coming week to get an update on his status? If McMullen told Riley he was just skipping spring ball and would be back in the fall, Riley would already know his status and there would be no reason to check back. My opinion: McMullen said he was done, Riley was giving McMullen a chance to change his mind before a formal announcement. I still think it's good to let things play out before jumping conclusions, but in this case, some peoples' conclusions were correct.
LINCOLN, Neb. -- Nebraska defensive lineman
Greg McMullen is taking a leave of absence from spring practice.
Coach Mike Riley said Saturday that McMullen is out indefinitely to address matters related to graduating this spring and getting into grad school.
McMullen will be entering his fifth season in the program this fall. He started all 26 games the past two seasons. He has been working at tackle this spring, after playing mostly defensive end.
Riley said he planned to speak with McMullen in the coming week to get an update on his status. The team's spring game is next Saturday."
