behind Dungy. Supposedly they really want Dungy because of his image and the impact he could have on the PSU image. Looking at him as the #1 candidate with Mullen the 2nd choice.

He won in Indy because he had one of the greatest QBs ever. Not to mention his time in Tampa. Even that half baked-Croom-wanna-be-retard they currentlyhave as a coach "took" them to a Super Bowl with Manning.

Look at how great that team is now. This season alone tells me that Dungy is/was all hype. Not to mention they would be stupid to hire someone that has been out of the college game this long.

But I guess it's more of a PR move for them than anything else.

I was told I would be wetting my pants if we hired Dungy, but I don't see it.

He hasn't coached in college, at least not in a long time. Not to mention his success was based on a QB and a system that he won't have in college.

I could halfway understand it at PSU for the PR purposes, but I see him being a huge risk if any college team were to take a chance on that type of hire.

Not to mention the fact that he's probably too honest for the college game. See Croom's recruiting before he finally figured out that he needed someone to work behind the scenes.

He took Tampa Bay to the playoffs four of his six years there. They hadn't even had a winning season in the 15 prior to him getting there. And he did that with Shaun King. Defense is what he's always been known for, and that's why Indy wanted him. He did well enough to get them a Super Bowl. Peyton gets far too much credit, and Dungy doesn't get enough.

His squeaky clean, no nonsens, helped Mike Vick, image has to be appealing. Plus, it may be a hire thatwould ease some of therecruits' parents fears.

Croom, Weiss, Sherman, etc. It just seems that one they areingrainedwith the NFL-style of football its much harder to go back to the college game and be successful.

But he also lost his job and had another coach win the Super Bowl a year later.

I just don't believe that he deserves all of the hype he recieves.

They got tired of just going to the playoffs. That's like us firing Mullen for being tired of taking us to bowl games.

I don't think PSU will go after Richt. Nor do I think he'd want to go there. But it would be funny if he did and UGA called Kirby Smart back (think he's a UGA alum), leaving the Rebs to start anew.

I wonder if Dan could handle continuous observation over his shoulder or whatever other restrictions that will be put in place ...arrogant personalities wont like that...I really think that is something to consider

Most coaches fit in the college game OR the pro game, not both. Rare exceptions in basketball and football include guys like Larry Brown and Jimmy Johnson. It's usually an either/or.

People like to point to Petrino, Saban, and Spurrier if they're pushing for an NFL guy. Problem is, those are college guys that tried the NFL and failed, because they belonged in college.

Pete Carroll is one of the few that was virtually an NFL lifer that came to college and had major success. Given his stints in the NFL though, maybe he was always meant to be a college coach, not an NFL coach. He and John Gruden are the only current NFL names that I think could come to college and have success, and Gruden is the only one of those two that had NFL success.

The people that like NFL names are usually the ones that want to impress their buddies at work or the country club with a name. They aren't thinking it through.

Dungy has NEVER coached in college. He has never had to recruit or use 18 year old students in his schemes with limited practice time. He also wouldn't tolerate a lot of the methods used by many of the "great recruiters" in college football today. Therefore, it might be difficult for Dungy to succeed at OM or many other schools.

However, Penn State could use a "good man" like Dungy right now, and PSU being a big program means they don't have to have a slick salesman to recruit well.

I dont' even doubt that he is a good coach. I just don't think that he is as good as advertised.

If Sean Payton quit this season and there was little to no roster change with the Saints, would he be your first choice or even in the top five of coaches you would want to hire?

Rich McKay became the Tampa Bay GM in '93 and hired Dungy in '96, I believe. <div>
</div><div>While Dungy did have success there, improved personnel, typically the GM's realm, could also explain TB's turn around in the 90's, including the three better-than-average years under Dungy. McKay then went on to help improve the Falcons' plight in the 2000s.</div><div>
</div><div>Point being, I agree with others' uncertainty about Dungy's potential as a college coach.</div>
