look for merlins to be on the list of viable candidates. He will NOT be their top choice, but he will certainly make a BIG play for that job. Going to affect recruiting regardless of the outcome.

Sure hope somebody is keeping Hud advised AND that SOMEBODY has thought about making sure the communication channels are open to Jones and the Houston coach over the possibilities. Right now Jones is nothing but a Demarcus Walker plan B, but once the rumors start swirling, he might start looking 85 miles east. Somebody in the admin has GOT to stay on top of Jones and keep him calm until the dust settles. If they get Walker, Jones has no offer. Somebody needs to remind him of this every day.

Because Kelly and Mullen are buds?

I guess Kelly would put in a good word for Mullen, but whatever you call the scheme we put together on offense this year isn't going to sit well on the Oregon pallet. Mullen has to be regretting straying away from his bread and butter philosophy by now...

Bull. Mullen has been building everything towards next year......

I do think he was willing to leave after 2010, but hasn't been pushing for it since then. He knew his best teams would be 2013 and 2014.

Calling out your crap is beginning to become a weekly ritual for me.

Edited: The bull I'm calling out is that Mullen will be actively trying to get that job. I am not arguing that Oregon may come after Mullen.

I think the chances he gets an offer are less than 25%. That job looks to be destined for one of their current assistants. Or, alternatively, it's probably one of the very few places Petersen would say "yes" to. I agree with you that mullens should not have let extraneous influences dictate Russell. What a concrete-footed albatross he has turned out to be.

shumley i enjoy your posts (although i admit sometimes i'm not sure my sarcasm meter is tuned in well enough) but respectfully if you seriously think right now that DM is going to be a serious candidate for oregon you are smoking better stuff than i usually get. right now he's not on even the long list.

Only to ignorant State fans...to AD's and other decision makers, Mullen putting Miss State in NYD bowls looks pretty impressive. People outside of Mississippi see State as a school that is below .500 all-time in winning percentage and a coaching graveyard because, well, that's what it has been. They see Mullen doing things here nobody else has been able to do- so to them- that's impressive

Don't you realize that these seniors are holding back way better players...

Once that defense gets Boyd, Lawrence, Banks, and Slay off the roster, that defense gets way better.

Also, damn Bumphis and Smith need to realize that the next Antionio Hargro (Joe Morrow) has been forced to sit and watch while his NFL stock stays stagnate when it should be going through the roof.

Thankfully once all this deadwood graduates you will be able to have more playing time for clearly more talented players which allow the defense to improve.

I totally agree with Goat here, most of the spirit board said the same thing after the 2009 season when we said how much better our defense would be in 2010 after we got rid of the dead wood of Greg Hardy, Kendrick Lewis, Dex and John Jerry. We all know that backups to NFL players are automatically better the following year, and there is almost never a dropoff in production.

coach, first AD's and other decision makers look past the 8-4 record. the way ya'll got hammered by every good team you played this year may be lost on some state fans (not many SPSr's though) but not on serious people who are doing the hiring. and i'm amazed that you think what coach mullen has done at msu is that remarkable.. both our jobs are tough but even as an ole miss fan i think you are selling msu way short.

I'm talking about the lines, smart boy. You know, the heart of a football team. Skill players are only as good as the lines. Fletcher Cox proved how much that matters.

Shame for such talk, filling the recruits with such negativity and bad news. Cadaver told me writing things such a this was not allowed.

I'll remind you of this post later. Not because I think he has much of a chance in getting a legit offer, but because the party line from your brethren will be that "he's gone to Oregon" once the talk starts up.

I agree that a good defense start with the DL.

So after losing Boyd, clearly your best DL this year, who are you pointing to based on this past year's performance to give you all of this confidence? Cox was a pre-season ALL SEC player headed into his junior year. Which player on the DL has a chance to be first or second team ALL SEC next year?

Do you think next year's DL has a chance to be better than the 2010 DL that MSU had which included Cox and McPhee, two future starters in the NFL? Im sure you don't think the LB corps will be better because that 2010 team had White and Wright.

Now on the OL Im assuming you believe Gabe Jackson will come back, which would help since the 2010 OL had two NFL players on it, including one first round pick. Now the OL certainly should be solid next year, but that depends on what offense you run. Is it the running one or is the passing one?

Colin Cowherd has repeatedly stated that he's "heard" that the only job Chris Petersen would leave Boise for is Oregon.

And I do, too, agree that Mullen will get a look at the Oregon gig. Doubt he gets it, but he'll be mentioned and will flirt with it.

I think the majority of our talent on the DL are Soph and Frosh

It's up to them to decide whether or not they step up and become a solid DL. They step up and I think it will be night and day from this season to next season. There is no doubt if Quay, James, Eulls, Autry, Jones and Virges put forth the effort that our DL will be a pretty talented DL. While you are being a smartass, I do believe we have younger players with better upside than the seniors this season. They may not have been better this season to over take the seniors for playing time, but they definitely have the upside to be better than the seniors. The 1 position I'm most concerned about next season is the CB position. If we don't get more pressure on the QB next season, we will get lit up.

Mullen knew his 2013 and 2014 teams would be the best?? Really? You mean the 2013 team that will have redshirt seniors from the stellar Croom 2009 recruiting class, but filled with seniors and redshirt juniors from the horrible 2010 recruting class?
The 2014 team will be filled with seniors from the lightly regarded 2011 recruiting class. I can't believe that Mullen thinks that those teams will be his best.

Well said. Program building is all about replacing Sr. starters with younger, more talented replacements. We're doing that basically everywhere that we lose people except CB.

There was nothing horrible about the 2010 or 2011 classes. A few insecure MSU fans got their feeling hurt because we lost 3 players, 1 of which were never truly committed to us. There were a lot of solid players in both classes. Go back and check the actual names, and not the rankings, dipshit.

if kelly goes to the NFL, it's about 90% certain that oregon will simply promote the OC mark helfrich. he's an oregon native and a former grad assistant for the ducks. he knows kelly's system as well as anyone not names chip kelly. he would keep unity among the coaching staff (guys like allioti (DC), greatwood (OL), and campbell (RB) have been at oregon for years, long before kelly became HC) and probably help keep the recruiting rolling right along. mullen probably wouldn't even be on the radar unless a long string of other candidates turned down phil knight's $$$$$.

petersen was an assistant for oregon from 95-01. if kelly leaves, i'd probably say the odds are 90% helfrich gets promoted from OC, 9.9% that petersen takes the job, and 0.1% the field.

now shmuley... don't paint me with my brethren, some of them are a bit farther out than i am and i can't take repsonsibility for all their nonsense.......but that said, i doubt the talk will even start up unless from either ole miss partisans stirring the pot or promoters of coach mullen. it's not going to come from oregon i don't believe.

2010 looked great. Since then, not so much. The 1-5 closing drives home the point. Mullen simply is not that attractive to serious football schools. Again, I'm not ready to jump on the 'run his *** off' train, but if next season goes anything like the way this one finished....I will be and so will the majority.

Conveniently forgetting a guy named VICK BALLARD?? James Carmon too. JUCOs count. From 2010, Lawson, Holmes, Muniz, Griffin, another Hughes, Bohanna and Hill are all still on the team, many of them contributing. What are you smoking? Michael Carr is reportedly coming back as well.

In 2011 class, Trapp plays special teams. Harris, Market, DARIUS SLAY, Cox who we now have committed again after an All-American JUCO career, Knox, Warren, Jackson still also on the team. Did you just conveniently miss all these guys???

Does anybody else catch yourselves reading these Rebel posts (law dog, and jacksonreb) in a plantation owner voice with a heavy southern Haley Barbouresque tone, like a lawyer off of an old Time to Kill style movie? They sit here and paint this terrible picture of what we have returning for the next several years, even though it's false, in hopes that it will stay at the top of the page. That way it does two things...1) it makes the dipshit insecure MSU fans start wondering if they're right, and 2) if by chance a recruit comes by, they see post after post of how ****** our returning talent is. So what do we do? We argue with them for hours and feed everything they're trying to accomplish. We truly are our own worst enemy and deserve every bit of "we are MSU" that we endure. But maybe I'm wrong.

Sorry, I don't think there will be one 1st round draft pick in that group, much less the 3 that are possible from the 2009 class. That is a very mediocre group. Contributors but not great.

I wasn't going to name every freaking players. I posted starters/2nd stingers/players who have played a lot.

You have not made a good post on here yet. Seriously.

Of those 3 possible first-rounders from 2009, one was a 4* and highly recruited(Fletcher Cox). Banks was a no-offer 2*/3* depending on site. Gabe was a 3* with offers from MSU and USM -- who Rivals had as the 28th best player IN MISSISSIPPI. If this is a recruiting argument, we didn't beat ANYONE with a pulse for two of those guys. Only one that was a recruiting battle was Cox.

So, just how do you think you can adequately judge players from our 10 and 11 classes already?
