One thing Bob Barchi doesn't seem to understand

Most large state universities, especially those competing in the Big Ten, realize the value of a successful athletic program. Especially the flagship sports of football and men's basketball. Successful teams in these two sports can bring tons of publicity and advertising. Remember how our enrollment went up after the 2006 football season? This man just doesn't seem to get it that this is an investment that needs to be made.

I don't want to pile on tonight after another painful loss, I think I have made my opinion of Barchi pretty clear, but you are on to something.

There's no nice way to say this but why are so many of our fans so dense? Attack Julie & Barchi all you want, as they're easy targets, but they serve at the mercy of the BOGs. If Brown & the clowns don't want to make a move or spend $, then Julie & Barchi can't do a damn thing. Julie & Barchi do what the BOGs authorize & only have authority to spend $250k without BOGs approval. Why is this so hard to understand?

You think the president of a BIG 10 school has no say in what investments his school makes?

Yes, I must be stupid if its this easy to understand.

Lets just get rid of Barchi and his $750k salary and put Brown in charge if he is that powerful, at least we would save a crap load of money!!!!!!

He has a say & as Ex Officio he is on the inner circle but he has no authority to spend like everyone wants him to without Brown & the rest of the BOGs approval. If they wanted a new coach, then they'd tell him, regardless of whether he wants it or not. If they don't want change, then he can say whatever he wants to them but it means nothing without their approval. Are people that unaware of basic corporate spending & signing authority?

As for Brown, when he takes himself off the milk carton let me know. What has he done as chair of BOGs?

However, the call for Athletics to cut the subsidy has transcended 2 Athletic Directors, and 2 university Presidents, and 2 chairmen of the BOG. The only constant has been the majority membership of the BOG. And consistently the BOG has made the call to reduce the subsidy.

The only thing that has changed between McCormick/Pernetti and Barchi/Hermann is that the focus to cut the subsidy has shifted from cutting costs to raising revenue. Pernetti worked under Barchi for such a short period of time, and the budget for that year was already in place before Barchi got here, that it isn't really clear if the focus on cutting costs came from Pernetti or McCormick.

Other school BOT and Presidents see revenue generating sports much differently than Rutgers. Past and present RU Administrations and BOT have been toxic not only to football but also to basketball. I often think of UCONN right up the road, a small school that's won 4 National Championships in BB, 2 Big East Championships in Football and 999 championships in women's BB. Can you imagine what the upside would be for UCONN if invited to a major conference? To me Kyle Flood exists because of an incompetent Administration.

Well Barchi did say firing Flood was on the table when he was suspended. Maybe he will surprise us.

Anyone who concludes that Barchi's tenure has been anything less than wildly successful, should mail their diplomas back.

You don't deserve it.

Logically, this being a football message board and all, we are hyper focused on athletics. Barchi's overall tenure is so far exceeding expectations that the BOG is planning on offering him an extension--which he will accept.

We all better sure as hell hope he "gets it." Otherwise, we're in for a dark decade.

And Leonard and Upstream are totally on point. Barchi's tenor in the press is the message he's been instructed to deliver. Nothing more, nothing less.

On a personal level, I don't believe he is committed to big time athletics. But I'm confident he would dutifully execute the mandate given to him by the BOG.

If they said, "go get (insert $3MM a year coach here)" he would. They aren't telling him that right now.

Well if he is not committed to big time athletics then he certainly is not "going to the mat" on Julie's behalf to lobby the BOG in the wisdom of making such an investment. With regard to his work with the medical school integration and delivering the benefits that are expected with that, he may be doing a good job but I guess my question would be if this is true shouldn't we start to see the schools image and ranking improve? Perhaps it takes time and I know these rankings take into account many factors but I think the most recent round did not reflect any bump for improvements on the academic side.

I agree with most of this but I'd say if he's going out and trying to raise private money for athletic endeavors just like he would for other university endeavor then I think he's doing his job and probably not as against big time athletics as others think. I just think he doesn't want it to come from university funds and the BOG is setting the tone on that as well.

A major problem is the fact that this state from the state leadership down has no interest in the university. You have state represenatives that went to different universities or did not ever attend college at all. They do not understand the importance of having a strong athletic program. I am starting a company and wanted to set up part of the operations in NJ, a way to tie it to RU and give back. Not one person wanted to partner in. They view the state as a real loser. Until we get change in the Goverment, BOT and a change in attitude by state residences, then it is a up hill battle.

Within the next three weeks, many people on this board will have to eat their words when they are proven wrong.

Unfortunately I don't know if the people proven wrong will be those who say the university leadership cares about athletics or those who say they don't.

OK I volunteer to be the lightning rod here.
McCormick already went all in once before wih no football success, no increased revenues, or donations

Maybe the bog looks at big ten revenues and says in 12years we will reap 200mllion( maybe ) But in 2013and 2014 we subsidized 80million, or 40percent of the expected haul . Who knows what 2015 brings but the subsidy has not been below 20million, from memory, since 2005. So half the amount expected to flow in has already been spent.

As for revenue producing sports is the suggestion that volleyball, baseball, tennis, soccer and wrestling are cause of 47million in subsidies? Most of these are partial scholarship and need what in the way of equipment?

And that football is driving the bus with 17million in ticket sales and donations out of the 76million dollar budget. They don't open the books but its hard to fathom that football breaks even and those Olympic sports lose 47million.

Now the Lesniak plan calls for 25million in tax credits and 75million coming from somewhere else for RAC renovation.

I understand everyone on this board is more of an insider than me but there is not much that makes sense here

That may be. But if Hermann thinks we need a new coach, then it is her job to find the funding and get Barchi to buy in. And then it is Barchi's responsibility to support her and to get the BOG to buy in.

I love how people are so sure they are right about people they know nothing about. People need to relax a little. I don't think its going out on a limb to suggest Barchi "gets it" a hell of a lot more than the people attacking him on these boards.

I would love to see some of you guys in a high level meeting.

I think he'd buy into anything as long as it's not increasing the subsidy. I don't see why he'd object to anything done with private funds and if he's helping to achieve that goal then I think he's doing his job.

Overall rankings may or may not have improved. I don't follow those things.

Business School rankings have improved dramatically, especially on the MBA level. We've gone from mid 60s to 49th. That has corresponded with increased investment (the new building), a concerted effort by Sharon Lydon (director of the program) and others (new dean Lei) to network and manage an information campaign with their counterparts in the Top 50.

Law school merger will result in improved rankings.

Life Science rankings have improved.

Grant money is up double digits on a % basis.

he absolutely understands and if he wants to ,at this time , he will be retained for any length he wants by the BOG--they and the state love him--as someone said if flood is fired it's up to Julie to get it done and raise the $

The BOG had only cared about getting the medical school started. They essentially sacrificed the rest of the school for that goal. How else can you explain hiring a president of 2,000 student health sciences school to run a large state liberal arts college. He has 0 experiences working for a schoo like Rutgers.

Unfortunately, because of resources & realities of time & the fact that there are many many moving parts to the puzzle of bringing the major components of the athletic program to a level of excellence, at this point in time it might be difficult to discern the difference between a shrewd & visionary Barchi and a clueless oblivious Barchi.

Take some tiny, tiny consolation in the thought that this could be worse - we could be seeing the actions of an impulsive dumb-poop Barchi who attempts an ill-fated firing 'for cause' that collapses and ends up costing $$$ and more reputation stain ... attempts this with no search plan - or plan on even how to begin ... and no funds to procure an incrementally better staff ... and ultimately selects a mediocre WTF choice & signs them to a five year deal.

So right now a clueless oblivious Barchi - would be saying next to nothing and is doing next to nothing.
AND
Right now, a shrewd & visionary Barchi - would be saying next to nothing - and while appearing to be doing next to nothing, would actually be directing the coordination of an expedited plan for dramatic improvement.

You're insane

Barchi has great value.. however.. so did Pernetti, who Barchi threw under the bus to hire Julie Hermann... who was inserted into the executive search process late in the game and not vetted properly. Barchi was willing to sacrifice any number of persons until the criticism came to his door.. then he got some balls and stood firm. If he had done that when people called for Pernetti to be fired we'd all be better off right now.

I don't know what Barchi knows or what he cares about, but he did hire Eddie Jordan to a contract that was twice what the previous coach was making at a time we didn't have an athletic director.

I think they are all waiting until the season plays out so they can see the data and make a logical decision. I don't think JH and Barchi will be too pumped when they see the loss in revenue the 2nd half of the season, ticket sales down and donations down. A good way to avoid those losses is investing in a new coach.

Wasn't a lot of the momentum from the business school started before? Also, while I understand the USNWR isn't scientific, we somehow managed to slip again, despite the most qualified entering class ever, the B1G and CIC, the merger, and everything you mentioned. I think there are still some areas he is not looking at. RU has to play the game to a certain extent. It's tougher to get into RU than TTFP these days, and I'm not sure the NJ upper middle class is aware, nor are the OOS students and their $$$ we should be asking for.

The thing about Barch is....he said it was his choice to suspend rather than fire Flood.

RU had ample cause to fire Flood in September, could have saved the season, could have said RU does what is right and PAYS NO BUYOUT.

But keeping him ensured he will get paid something, destroyed the season, angered the fans, and made RU look even more inept.

And again...Barchi stated this was his choice.

So why should we forgive him for that...this was also an academic scandal. This was the second time that a coach was suspended when he should have been fired under Barchi's watch.

Maybe he is merger magician but he has no idea about PR or basic contractual functions both of which you need to a run a university the size of RU.
