Rutgers is becoming too entrenched in the conference to ever get kicked out. There is simply no reason to. Forget athletics. The research side all but guarantees existence forever.

How important is research when TV execs control the membership of the conference?

I believe the Apple media deal was going to be about $20M per team so, even at $30M the Big Ten partial payment is superior.
It is but then they estimate about 10am extra travel costs so it becomes about par maybe with the B10 deal being a little more. Regardless, they have long term security now.

President's actually control it.

Media rights deals are peanuts compared to grants the consortium gets. They don't want to rock that boat. Especially when there is zero reason to.

I don’t think we get any AAC teams, but I think Miami is an AAU team. Miami and Stanford would entice ND more than other schools. Knowing ND, they might insist on BC for the final slot.

Well said. Those that think football money drives the bus, are quite ignorant. Research grants are in the billions.

I have been following this expansion, the vitriol against Rutgers being in the Big Ten surfaces in virtually every independent podcast, and/or national sports news stream. Rutgers better get their act together in football ASAP or they may see a reduced payout from the B1G, or eventually possibly kicked out of the conference. The situation is fluid
Chill bro nothing like this is not the horizon. We need to improve for the fans and for our self respect, not for outside reasons.

The longer this goes on, the less strength ND is going to have.

The B1G isn't going to kowtow to them. They are a great brand but they aren't coming into the B1G calling shots. That's why they are in the Acc for everything but their crown jewel.

Ok, many people don’t understand this. There are no such thing as consortium grants. Individual universities receive grants, and they are all competing against each other for those grants, so they rarely cooperate or bid jointly for anything. Rutgers has not generated anything tangible from the research consortium, and expansion decisions are solely being made around football considerations that are being guided by out media partners, which is why Oregon and Washington are in, and Stanford and Cal are out.

That's 100% not going to happen. We're not Temple in the Big East lol.

And research grants have nothing to do with what athletic conference your in.

I don’t think being exited from the B1G is a consideration at all. However, the issue of OSU, Mich etc. demanding a different allocation of revenue based on football success and tv ratings is a real concern in the future in my opinion.

The ACC is really in a hard place right now with that crazy 2036 lock in. What a bunch of dumbasses
Not too long ago we would have jumped at the chance for a long term pact like that. They’re not stupid. It was the right move at the time.

Here’s the big question relative to our FSU friend Jay.

We know the TV partners didn’t value Oregon and Washington at near the full share, but also that stories have said the B1G has been told by the partners that ND is an automatic full share if they are ever added.

What about FSU? If they pay a boatload of money to get out of the ACC, what do they get if they try to join the B1G mid contract?
Every team added to the Big 10 is a member of the Association of American Universities.(AAU) FSU has no chance.

They thought the ACC Network would be critical to driving revenue growth in the future and cut a deal to get it. It turns out they were wrong about that.

Give me an example of a consortium grant we are a part of?
Why would the U of Chicago stay in the consortium then and how are member schools able to get $10B a year in grants? Are you claiming they just do that individually?

Supposedly the B1G did the research on Oregon and Washington’s value to the TV partners at the time USC and UCLA were added, which is why they knew they wouldn’t get a full share and why they were not just added then.

They aren’t flying blind here. They have a good idea of what partial share is justified that won’t dilute anything for the current members.
Also read that the 1/2 share that Oregon and Washington will be receiving is still more than a full share in every other conference except the SEC

True, but my point was they weren’t stupid. Times change. Our situation shows it’s better to be lucky than good

For decades the universities of the Big 10 were of the biggest research universities in the country, and they are all applying for any research programs and grants they can. Rutgers was doing this long before joining the Big 10. The consortium is a glorified Library sharing program, that is about it. Stanford is generating nearly $2 billion of research grants by itself.

Assuming another two schools move to the Big Ten (at least), then what does all this mean for RU in terms of our share of TV money? I don't follow all this stuff, but I don't really see how these moves for conference expansion will benefit RU, at least financially.
From the numbers I know, these moves do not benefit RU financially at this time. I don’t see how these schools pay for their share, although with a 50% revenue cut for UW and OU, which will increase to a full share in 2029-30, the shortfall to us is diminished.

I agree, the Big 10 thought the same thing, and our network is doing better than the ACC Network, but it turns out the the real money is made from broadcasting marquee games on the big traditional networks.

Most of the Big10 schools are heavy-duty research factories, and all except Nebraska do it on a scale to be AAU. Football has nothing to do with it. The consortium came much later. So yes, one school’s research level has nothing to do with the others’ levels. Research Collaboration happens more outside the conference than within it.

Agree with these main points but not the Stanford figure. Where did you see that ?

This is what you risk when you have leverage and choose not to use it. Obviously they didn't learn the lesson of inaction after the B12 was wounded when Texas/OU left.

I saw Wilner bring up "presidential stasis" as an issue and it's so true. These aren't business people and frankly many commishes aren't either so I don't think they always can play things out and fully understand the risk of inaction at times.
Delaying or not deciding to move forward is a decision. And that decision often has devastating consequences.

They have already come out and said that isn’t a requirement, because Notre Dame isn’t a member and they want them.

They bring an extra 12-14 home games a year that the B1G will be compensated for, either by the current partners or by selling a separate Sat night package.
