Good for him, but that’s ridiculous. Not like they’re going to sell more tix. Good news for Alonso, Yamamoto, Bellinger, Soto, etc.

$70 M/year starting when he is 30 (coming this July) until he is 40. I'm sure he'll be a hand full for opponents for a couple of years but if he gets hurt or declines because of previous hurts, Dodgers are going to have one huge drag on the payroll.... especially with the other big contracts they currently have.

The Angels had Ohtani and Trout and Pujols and had little money to spend on the remainder of the roster. Even with those future HOF-ers, they went no where.

That just about kills the sport. Now teams will have an overpriced superstar and a hand full of kids from the local High School to fill out their rosters!

For a DH that pitches from time to time?

Overpaid by a wide margin.
When he can't pitch due to injury, his value drops by 50%.

The Dogders Suites won't even pay for this ridiculous contract amount.

It is such an outlier that it pisses the rest of them off as it does not move tge needle for anyone else.

The Angels could have gotten something of value in return for Ohtani by trading him last year.
Instead they let emotion get in the way of business.

My friend's son finally got the chance to start a few games at the end of the season and had a 2.25 ERA as a starter. The Angels might send him back to AAA again. Professional Baseball can be a cruel business.

Terrible contract. Maybe he really was interested in going to Toronto and the Dodgers had to overpay to get him. Can't wait to see what Boras wants to Soto next year.

Congrats to Shohei getting his $700 Million. If it’s there, get that money!

Now if he had signed with the Mets, there would be investigations, national backlash, and calls for the Mets to go back to the Wilpons. But its ok since its the Dodgers and Dan Patrick is happy.

Not true, it's being reported that most of this salary is being deferred. Not sure what the definition of most is in this case and when the deferral starts and ends but this frees then up to go out and spend more for this year without a worry. This might look like the Bobby Bonilla contract on steroids. And they'll monetize the crap out of him in all sorts of ways.

Maybe the Dodgers can actually win a WS at some point. That 2020 title during Covid is certainly suspect with a 60 game season. They have all these players and they have been terrible in the playoffs.

Why bring up BB when it worked out for the mets and how many other deferred are so much more and worse.

I'm old enough to remember when 10 years for $252M was considered outrageous.
And my stupid mariners paid that contract. Now they are cutting payroll to maximize profits for the ownership, which is a group of greedy cowards

The Bonilla signing didn’t really work out for the Mets. Maybe the financial hit wasn’t as bad over time, but on the field it was a disappointment. What reporter did he threaten to show the Bronx to?

Deferral of Ohtani's salary obviously helps the Dodgers from a cash flow standpoint, but not from a luxury tax standpoint. They will take a luxury tax hit for the full $70m per year.

Because he was the only one that came to mind and he has a freaking day named after him because of it. I actually had to look it up and it seems like it's very rare. Only 13 retired players are getting paid this year. No clue if there are active players with referrals in the future.

They just don’t care and it never catches up to them. It caught up to the Padres this year. The thing is that the nature of baseball and the baseball playoff structure means that throwing all of this cash around can still mean nothing.

People are underestimating the value of the Japanese market. Every Dodger will be on live TV in Japan.

Have you ever watched an Angels game? Most of the advertising on the boards behind home plate is in Japanese.
The Dodgers have experience monetizing the Japanese market.
