4pm deadline for the Franchise Tag.
Coming down to the wire.

2 QBs just signed:
Geno Smith 3/105m (35m/year)
Derek Carr 4/150m (70-100m guaranteed)

These seem like the baseline for a Jones deal.
Again, you can't say Jones is a better option over Smith/Carr and a franchise QB without paying him more than them.

With 40 minutes left, I don't see a Jones deal getting done. This sucks. He'll get tagged and Saquan will walk.

Gotta see the structure of the deal IMO. This is the going rate for QB's now. It's will go up once Herbrt, Hurts and Burrow sign

Gotta see the details, but overall, this is what the Giants were hoping for. A reasonable deal with Jones and tagging SB.

Ya it's weird wording.

I think it is 160 guaranteed.
Normally they would say 160m (125m guaranteed)
Accounting for the $35m in incentives.

But everyone is saying 160m PLUS 35m incentives.

Other news (will be interesting to see how this plays out):

The Ravens used the nonexclusive tag on Jackson, sources told ESPN. With the Ravens using the nonexclusive tag, Jackson can engage in contract talks with other teams. If Jackson signs an offer sheet with another team, Baltimore has the right to match the offer to keep him or take two first-round picks as compensation. The nonexclusive tag -- which will pay Jackson $32 million this season -- is less expensive than the exclusive one (projected at $45 million), which would have allowed the Ravens to control his rights this year.

so the 40 per year plus another possible 35 in incentives gets him pretty much to the 45 mil it was rumored to be crazy...

That tweet is worded insanely wrong
Hes not getting $82m for 4 years.
That would mean Jones gets no pay for Year 3 and 4.

Closer to $49m.
However, I would imagine if Jones isn't hitting the incentives (no clue what they are) he doesn't make it 4 years anyway.

ALL OF 160. then there's the incentives. Good
for both sides.

Did you see that anywhere? I can't find contract details yet and it would not make sense for the Giants to do this. If all was Guaranteed, Giants would take a cap hit of $40M per year.
This comment clears it up

Lots of conflicting information. What I last heard was 4 years $160M with something like $96 guaranteed. Also heard the cap hit in year 1 is about $19m. Not sure how they make that happen, but thats some creative math if true.

As with every contract in the NFL, the key is NEVER look at the total money. Players with huge contracts never reach the end of their deal, they either are cut are restructured to kick the cap space hit down the road after a certain point. Jones will get his 80 mill guaranteed from the Giants, but after the 2nd year, they will either restructure or cut him.

ESPN is reporting that only the $82m is guaranteed.

Covering for the GM's stupid decision to not use the players option in October when they could have signed him for 1 year for 25 million.

I think this was critical because at the end of the day Jones has had 1 good year . I hope he's fabulous but the truth is he threw 15 TD passes-----Mahomes threw 42------Burrow threw 40. We really don't know yet what he is.

They lost both games to Dallas and the Eagles in the regular season-----the Playoff game vs Philly was a disaster.

The Giants have 20 million in cap money----not very much and they need to get some guys on perimeter who can help him.

October? What are you talking about? Setting that aside, you’re advocating for a decision that would have taken up more cap space this year than the contract that Jones just signed, and then you go on to complain about the limited cap space this year.

This is why we always need to see the full context of an NFL contract and not take it as face value tgat 4 years 160mil means 40 per year. And how it is structured for cap is vital.
And let’s be honest- if tge Giants signed DJ for the 25 mil this year- fans would have been pissed the F off as many were even willing to just dump him.
Sounds like this current deal ended up a win win for both parties.
And DJ is young enough that if he really explodes these next couple of years- his next contract will be his big one.

I don't worry about 1 year-----as it stands now they're married to him for at least 3 .

Hope he's a great one-----we'll see.

Here is a good breakdown of the contract and the deadcap hits.

Jones is guaranteed 12m of base salary in 2025 if he's on the roster in March 2024.
So that is basically guaranteed.
If he's cut after 2024 - the 2025 deadcap will be closer to $30m I believe.

I believe he was referring to your incorrect statement that Jones' 5th year option should have been picked up in October. Giants would have had to exercise this by May 2022, prior to the season. No way they were doing this with a new GM/Coach and Jones coming off of a neck injury plagued season. Jones proved himself to Daboll - that's why they layed out the cash for his new contract. Has nothing to do with TDs.

Per WFAN, Jones is making what Judge will make this season. Crazy.
Except that all of Judge's money is guaranteed. And just the nature of the beast- A QB will most likely be the single person with the most significant impact every single game. A RF in MLB(no matter how good) will not single handed impact that many games during a baseball season.

Technically true. But this is why talk radio sucks....because they place focus on low information.

Jones salary this year is $9.5M guaranteed. He recieved a signing bonus of $35M against the entire 4 year contract. Jones will recieve $82M guaranteed over 4 years. If he performs well, he will capture the entire $160M or even more depending on if he is extended or reaches his extra incentive clauses. If Jones does not play well etc... he will likely be cut after contract year 2......making his guaranteed $82M.

Judge will make $360M over the next 9 years regardless.

You're definitely underestimating Judge's impact.
Not to disrespect Judge-without his efforts, Yankees may not have made the playoffs last year. Let’s say he single handed LT gave them 10-15 extra wins. Which is huge. But, 85-90% of every game- he is on the bench while someone else is hitting or in the field with the play not coming to him. But his impact last year was about as “plus” as a baseball player can be.
A QB directly factors into pretty much 50% of every single game.

Apparently Odell had a private workout for a handful of teams and the Giants were one of the teams there. I pray they don’t sign this clown. He seems like the total type of player that will not fit in to what Schoen and Daboll are building. Let him be a distraction elsewhere

At least wait until after the draft to see what you get and free agent changes.

Odell is OK with me but he's made of glass and I wouldn't bother.
As an aside, I blame the players who went after Coughlin for having Shockey go to seed.
I believe it was Tiki and Shockey complaining to media and owners about Coughlin being too strict.
Then Coughlin went slack and Shockey became an A-hole.
When OBJ got a little flaky Coughlin was conditioned to go limp again and OBJ got flakier.
OBJ was never the jerk Shockey was and he could have been corrected
Tom always looked lost when it came to players who needed a nudge here or there.

When it comes to OB- I just play it cautious- you can’t pay too $.
But, when he was here, I don’t remember any teammate or coach having a problem with him as a teammate or in tge locker room
