"Schoen gave the Jacksonville Jaguars picks No. 25, 160 (fifth round) and 240 (seventh round) to move up one spot to help his secondary.
That earned him a huge bear hug from Martindale, his defensive coordinator, in the draft room.
“You guys know Wink’s defense and what he likes,” Schoen said with a smile. “Deonte fits that mold to a ‘T.’ So he was ecstatic.”...
Multiple league sources believe Flowers would have been the Giants’ pick if he had slipped to 25, but he never made it there.
“The way it went down and the way the board fell, we were getting depleted,” Schoen admitted.
Giants draft crew is clever/smart/thorough
"So once the Jacksonville Jaguars came up on the clock at 24, Schoen said he executed a trade that he’d worked with Jags GM Trent Baalke ahead of time just in case...
“We track the 30 visits, and the reality is, the last four or five teams in a line there, when things looked like they were lining up for us, he visited a lot of those places,” the GM said. “So you take a lot of that into account, risk versus reward. Didn’t want to get greedy. Hey, this is a player we like, we covet, don’t get cute. Let’s just take him, and then we’ll move on to Day 2 of the draft.”
Schoen said he had options to trade back out of 25, too. And he also had a list of players at less premium positions that he could have selected if he’d stayed pat.
“When you’re picking at 25, we had multiple positions — and it may not be a popular position, but they were the best player available,” he said. “And we were prepared in different scenarios that we went through where we would have taken one of those players.”
