Ok, Jim Sumner's question is still on the table, but I will go ahead and throw one on the table....
Name the guard who left after Bill Foster's first year at Duke, upset over his playing status??
OFC
Nobody.
Rick Gomez left after Foster's second year. Barely played and barely remembered.
But I suspect you're aiming for Kenny Young, who stayed two years and was in the rotation, off the bench. Demanded to start and when reminded that Duke's starting guards were Tate Armstrong and Jim Spanarkel, he decided to try elsewhere. Bucknell, I believe.
Had he stayed, he would have gotten dibs on the vacancy that opened up with Armstrong's broken wrist. Instead, Steve Gray got the nod and was not ready for prime time.
Interesting speculation. Had Young stayed and played well after Armstrong's injury in '77, does he hold off Harrell and Bender as a senior incumbent in 1978?
Since no one has bit on my St. John's question, I'll give the answer. Maverick Rowan's father Ron played for that great 1985 St. John's team that included Chris Mullin, Bill Wennington, Walter Berry and Mark Jackson.
