I haven't been to Memphis in a number of years, and I may get flamed for this, but I liked the Butcher Shop. Blues City Cafe had a pretty good one too if I remember correctly. But I'm sure there are countless other holes in the wall that make those two seem terrible.

Have not had a steak in Memphis in years, but Folks Folly was at one time, one of the best anywhere. I hear it's gone to **** though. Aside from that, The Butcher Shop was always pretty good. The Chicago Steakhouse at the Gold Strike is top quality. I had the Tomahawk Ribeye back in the summer. If you are feeling like a road trip, you can hit up the Como Steakhouse. Stan Sandroni runs his big *** mouth about it all the time. If its good enough for Stan, it's good enough for anyone.

I went to the Butcher Shop several years ago. I thought it was great. No shame in it.

I've had the ribeye at Acre, it's pretty damn good. Flemings is top notch, too.

Looking for a new place.. anybody been to Erling Jensen's?

I'm sure Iris has something incredible.

Folks Folly is the standard answer. A little stuffy for my taste. Grill 83 is pretty good. Haven't been there in several years though.

You mentioned Erling Jensens. It's good, but not worth the $$ in my opinion.

May the gorgonzola stuffed filet at Ronnie Grisanti's rest in peace.

Ruths chris steaks are good but sides Are garbage. Out of them, mortons and flemings, flemings is most constistant.

RC steaks are good though but besides their sweet potato side dish, their sides are applebees esque

Go to Restaurant Iris and get the surf and turf strip

A strip split and with either oysters or shrimp layed over it. Might be the best meal you will find in Memphis, and Iris is far and away my favorite restaurant in Memphis.

Outside of that Folks Folly is good, Acre is good, I guess you always have Ruth Chris as well

Texas de is wonderful and worth at least one trip, don't get me wrong, but if you're just looking for a good steak with a baked potato and salad, I wouldn't call it the best Memphis has to offer. The Butcher Shop is my choice.

Erling Jensen is very good but not for a steak. If you want a steak I'd try Flemings or Folks Folly. Hell, for the money and experience my wife and I actually enjoy making the drive to Como.

If you are looking for a really great restaurant that's different try Felicia Suzanne's. my favorite restaurant in Memphis. Hands down. Always a great experience.

My old roommate owns Iris. He worked for John Besh before he opened Iris

His food is great. He's got two or three now I think.

Buckley's if it is still there. Downtown on Madison or union about a block off or two off of front street. Known for their filets. Butcher Shop is also good.
Don't waste your money on Folks Folly.

Jim's Place (formerly Jim's Place East)

Great filet everytime I've been. I haven't eaten there since they moved, but if the food quality is the same, it'll be a good meal.

As a general note, I've always thought Memphis was pretty lacking in good restaurants for a city its size. Maybe I just don't know people who know where to eat.

Jim's Place is awesome. I have never had a bad meal from there, and yes their Steaks are great

no, it's not just you

i think it lacks in good restaurants as well..

let me rephrase by saying the suburbs lack in good quality restaurants. it's strange that the 3 zip codes (germantown (2) and collierville) with the highest median income have ZERO quality non-chain gourmet restaurants. east memphis and inside the loop is where you have to go. once you get there, then you've got maybe 10 or so quality restaurants with chefs that know what they're doing.

i say Acre is the best in Memphis metro hands-down. maybe it's because I can get Pappy Van Winkle for dessert, ha. If you haven't been, I highly recommend it. Wally Joe knows what the hell he doin.

The butcher Shop downtown closed last month. They sold the building downtown but still have the one in Germantown. Restaurant Iris is your best bet

Hate to hear Folks Folly might have taken a turn. Used to be one of my favorite spots in Memphis.
