Not at the Hump, but one surprisingly good concert at the Amphitheater was Weird Al back in 1985. He actually had a pretty decent band. So it was funny and actually pretty good musically.

I was at that show

It had been raining and I was standing up front

So good

Joan Jett played there a couple years later— the night before Homecoming… against Memphis?

She asked us if State was going to win. We told her no and said we sucked (State actually won that game)

DAC played the amphitheater in the Junction in the early 90s. I think a frat arranged it?
Joan Jett played a free concert at the amp too. There were also tons of good/decent bands that played free to $5 type concerts in McArthy. Better than Ezra, Smithereens, Hoodoo Gurus, ....

Seems like there was a free or cheap concert the friday before most home football games.

I was one of the local workers for Musicmaker Productions back in the early 90's. We'd get paid to help the roadies unload the trucks and set everything up. Get a pass (some backstage) for the concert. Then break it all back down and load it up afterward. Got to meet a lot of the talent in the process. Good times. FYI: Clint black has little man syndrome. Martina McBride opened for him and was super nice. The Panic show at the amphitheater was crazy. There wasn't that much to set up as compared to other concerts in the hump, but they all were so wasted the entire time - even the roadies. There was more smoke pouring out of the dressing room than out of the fog machines.

I saw him later in the 90s in Tupelo and it was very good, which only pizzed me off even more about the Hump fiasco
I bought Hank Live when I was 10 or 11. I’m the only person I know that liked that album. I was fully prepared for excessive blues drunk Hank when I came of age.

That Panic concert in 2001 might be why they don't have concerts in the Hump anymore.

That night was interesting, but the next morning, one of the guys cleaning up found a 3" thick roll of 20s.

My first time in the Hump was when my parents brought me along to see the Statler Brothers and Barbara Mandrell. If memory serves correctly, Mandrell had to cancel and we got Grandpa Jones in her place. To be honest, it was probably an upgrade.

REM also played the Hump in 1987 or ‘88 (think it was 1988) in a smaller version of the Hump by using black curtains to screen off a large part of it to make it seem like a much smaller venue.

Went to see a "One Song Wonder" band in the 70's called Wild Cherry. They played in McCarthy Gym......and to my surprise, that place was packed to the rafters. I literally had to sit at the very top and when I stood up, I could put my hand on one of the steel rafters. Of course that one song that made them famous was "Play That Funky Music White Boy".

Shinedown was at the amphitheater in 06 too. Remember going to that one.
Yes, after that concert some moron tried to burn down Dorman. I left that concert early because well, Shinedown sucks.

Unfortunately, Dorman stayed on it's feet as the Fire Department made it in time.

That's a strong lineup. As much as I hate to admit it, Nickelback was my first concert in the Hump. It was the MTV Campus Invasion from back in 2001ish time period. I was in High School. Worst concert I've ever been to.

I've seen some good ones in the Hump since then. but NOTHING like that late 70's/early 80's line up.

The list missed one of the best, the Guess Who (Burton Cummings) and also Neil Diamond. Believe it or not Heart played in the the auditorium at Lee Hall one year. Don't hold be to it, but I think the Moody Blues played at State back in the day also.

I was at a few of those in the late 70s early 80s. Pat Benatar was there too, around 83 or 84.

A friend of mine got me a job doing stage setup for the garth brooks show in 92. I was never a big fan of country music, but we had passes to the show. After a nap, I came in and saw about half of it. Still not my thing but I did appreciate Garth a lot more after that.
Great thread by the way!

In my time (88-92), I mostly went to concerts in McCarthy. The only one in the Hump I remember was the Cheap Trick (LA Guns opened) in 1990. I was not into country music, but my parents came up to see Gene Watson (I think in the Hump) in fall of 88.

Not on the list and I can't find it online but Cinderella and White Lion were at the Hump in 1989. Also saw Bob Dylan there around 94. I saw him in Oxford earlier and it SUCKED. Loud, distorted music with a full band. At the Hump, it was him, an acoustic guitar and harmonica. Much better! In 1992 the Dead Milkmen played between the boomerang dorms.

Merle Haggard and Lori Morgan opened for Clint Black, and it was a PHENOMENAL concert.

Martina McBride when she still had her long hair opened for Garth…..she has a generational voice and is just classically beautiful. Hate or love Garth, that sucker puts on a SHOW. He gave his guitar to a little kid, gave away a cymbal and some sticks, a ton of picks and who knows what else.

Yep, I went to several of those "Music Maker Productions" concerts at The Hump. BTW, Great White opened for Whitesnake at that concert in '88. Yeah, not sure why we stopped having them. You'd think if we made money we would've continued so who knows. I know Tupelo still has quite a few and it's not bigger than The Hump.

Am I the only one who saw Jack White at the hump a few years ago? He ripped pretty hard, but it was sad bc hardly anyone was there. The next night he played a sold-out madison square garden

I was there. I had a floor GA ticket.

Jack was good but I had the impression he was still feeling things out. Starkville was the second stop in his tour after Columbus OH and yes MSG in New York was next

I was pretty impressed with the opening act Chicano Batman.

I was at that Saliva concert. They are very loud band and to have them in that smaller venue, they blew the doors off.

Saw Better Than Ezra a couple times at Rick’s. They put on a great show as a three man band.

Wow… looking back, we had some of the best times between ‘79 & ‘84! Great concerts, good football teams ( we beat the Bear), great baseball years ( many big time players), and some ok basketball. Even had Otis Day and the Knights (ala Animal House) for a Pike party one night. They were awesome! Great times!
