Saw Pat Benatar there in 84 or 85A buddy of mine and I were talking last night and randomly got on this topic. I knew The Hump had some solid concerts back in the day, but I had no idea we brought in that many future legends. Kinda makes me jealous of the old-timers. Check out some of the ones I highlighted—here’s the link I pulled them from - https://www.alumni.msstate.edu/concerts-hump

Babe MccARTHYCheap Trick was not at the Hump. It was at the old gym whose name I forget.
The singer was so wasted he couldn't talk. Could just sing his tunes.
Man I loved that place... I would pay a lot of money to go back and get a sandwich and a large sweet tea today. At the old Bulldog Deli (current Bulldog Burger) they had all of the old concert posters. There were so many big time acts.
ZZ were definitely A-listers in the 70's and 80's but not as much in the 2000's (to me). I only meant the numbers of big time acts in their prime were lower after 2001 when I said that. I love Blues Traveler and others who played too, but I wouldn't call '07 their prime years. We went to the ZZ Top concert after 2001 and it was excellent. I guess it depends on different people's A-list. We've also gone to several concerts at the Riley Center in Meridian. Did State switch from the Hump to the Riley Center?
Yep. I have given up sweet tea but man I used to tear in up in there.Man I loved that place... I would pay a lot of money to go back and get a sandwich and a large sweet tea today.
Did we really have Ronnie freakin Millsap for SBW?? LOL Thank God I don't remember that at all.And this list doesn't appear to include SBW concerts. I worked stage crew/spot lights for Ronnie Milsap and a few others back around 1990ish.
The Smithereens played at McCarthy during that time too. May have been 91 or 92.In my time (88-92), I mostly went to concerts in McCarthy. The only one in the Hump I remember was the Cheap Trick (LA Guns opened) in 1990. I was not into country music, but my parents came up to see Gene Watson (I think in the Hump) in fall of 88.
I was at that weird Al concert too.I was at that show
It had been raining and I was standing up front
So good
Joan Jett played there a couple years later— the night before Homecoming… against Memphis?
She asked us if State was going to win. We told her no and said we sucked (State actually won that game)
I was at that Saliva concert. They are very loud band and to have them in that smaller venue, they blew the doors off.
Saw Better Than Ezra a couple times at Rick’s. They put on a great show as a three man band.
Kenny and dolly did a show there in the round In the early 80s.i Believe the Kenny Loggins was actually Kenny Rogers ....he was the most expensive of any of the groups at the time ....he commanded 100k guarantee ...groups like Kansas were like 40 K
I'm not sure why we had a lull, but I do believe they are coming back. I think we'll see some good bands coming back - whether that's at the Hump, Dude, or DWS, I don't know... but lots of schools are doing big concerts again. Why were concerts at the Hump stopped? Maybe because ticket prices have gone out of sight?

Yes. They play a part in putting together Bulldog Bash in the fall, and they also get a couple of smaller artists for a small festival at the amphitheater in the spring. Is the Music Makers organization still in existence?
REM and Hoodoogurus at the animal husbandry building in 89.A buddy of mine and I were talking last night and randomly got on this topic. I thought it was great. And I got paid to be there.Did we really have Ronnie freakin Millsap for SBW?? LOL Thank God I don't remember that at all.
I get it, not railing on ol Ronnie. I like some of his stuff now. Just sounded funny that college students had him as the headliner. I would have loved to have been in the mosh pit for 'Any Day Now'.I thought it was great. And I got paid to be there.
The scent alone is fine, but combined with BO and cheap weed... vomit-inducing.![]()

I’m more partial to Smoky Mountain Rain but way back when he was a big deal on the country scene.I get it, not railing on ol Ronnie. I like some of his stuff now. Just sounded funny that college students had him as the headliner. I would have loved to have been in the mosh pit for 'Any Day Now'.
I just figured vomit and piss were the smells they were going for. I am a two shower a day guy. I 17ing hate hippies that think this **** makes up for a bath. The scent alone is fine, but combined with BO and cheap weed... vomit-inducing.
I was unaware of this event, but that had to be wild. I imagine the purple drank could make even stadium cups smell delicious.Three 6 Mafia and Chamillionaire also missing from the list. Saw them at the Hump in 08
I always was told hell smells like piss and vomit 24/7/365I just figured vomit and piss were the smells they were going for. I am a two shower a day guy. I 17ing hate hippies that think this **** makes up for a bath.
It's unlikely he would have seen you there.Did we really have Ronnie freakin Millsap for SBW?? LOL Thank God I don't remember that at all.

One of my fraternity brothers owned it. He went on to become a very successful restaurateur, owning several establishments. He'd let us do deliveries anytime we wanted, making some extra dough, but mostly so we could deliver to the sorority houses.Man I loved that place... I would pay a lot of money to go back and get a sandwich and a large sweet tea today.
