One bad thing about living in Cali is that the pizza sucks. Blaze Pizza anyone?

I really miss NJ pizza and I am jealous of you all.
The crazy thing is that I have at least three places that I go to in my town that are excellent and there are much more in the surrounding towns. Probably why I haven't made it out there yet, but the place is legendary and I need to make a point of it.

Lot of monster scores for Jersey pizza with all different styles. Delucia's definitely fits in with all the rest. We're lucky to live here with all this great pizza.

I have lived in Raritan for 23 years and I have only been there twice. It was ok but I didn't think it was anything special. I might have to give it another try after everything dies down. I prefer Chimney Rock and use that as my go to for pizza.

Chimney Rock is ok. I did like Delucia's better but a lot of the places are sometimes hit and miss as well.

I've been there once, pretty good, but I used to go into Raritan for Uncle Vinny's all the time!

Chimney Rock pizza is unique and pretty damn good. Not joking, just ordered dinner from C Rock, 5:20pm pick-up. The little one loves the pizza and minestrone soup. :)
I like it but I wouldn't rave about it. The one in Flemington tastes very similar to the original so I wouldn't chalk it up to that either. I just had it Sunday myself.

Same here in WA. Luckily found 2 decent places. The owner of one is Sicilian and the owner of the other is from NJ.

I also never would say Jersey has it's own style of pizza but it kind of does. It's like the elevated bar pies. In no order and not naming them all some of the top pizzerias have it like Conte's, Federici's, Vic's, Kinchley's Star Tavern, Patsy's, Delucia's, Reservoir, etc.

He always says. "One bite, you know the rules" Then he takes 7 bites before giving his rating. 😂

I thought you might enjoy the following article that was just published in the Seattle Times.

https://www.seattletimes.com/life/food-drink/secret-ingredient-or-gimmick-does-a-100-year-old-sourdough-starter-equal-great-pizza/
Will Grant, who is shown on the cover and mentioned at the end of the article, is my niece Penny's husband.
In 2017, Will won the Non-Traditional Best Pizza in America Trophy for his Vegetarian Sourdough Gorgonzola Pizza that is made from his family Sourdough (Will improved it) that has been in his family since the Klondike era. He is a member of the US Team that competes each year in the World Pizza Championships in Parma, Italy (Road trip?).

His Pizza restaurants have always been on Bainbridge Island (ferry ride from Seattle and surrounding towns).

He is also opening a Pizzaiola School.

As you can tell, I am a little biased, but he does have several great pizza varieties if you ever travel to Seattle.

I found Chimney Rock truly terrible. No idea why people like that place. I could make a comparable pizza with a matzo, jar sauce and store brand cheese. And it was my first NJ pizza in a few years, too. Immensely disappointing.

Wish this review dropped here earlier. Was just in the area and would have tried Delucia's.

Still managed to eat enough NJ pizza to get sick of it, tho.

I think chimney rock is pretty good. The rock fries are awesome and they usually have good beers on tap. Giannis on stelton road is surprisingly good imo. Haven’t tried the place in Raritan. Personally think pizza in the city is better but maybe didn’t hit the right places. Here in pa it’s pretty much terrible.

Since I moved to outside of Charlotte, I've found a great place that makes legit Neapolitan Pizza. I would say it rivals some of the best places I've had in NJ.

The owner brings EVERYTHING in from Italy, and sources his water from a place in Pennsy because apparently the mineral content is that closest of Naples.

I used to frequently go to Chimney Rock in the ‘70s and ‘80s. I knew the owner and family and could have bought the bar, property, and license for roughly $750k a few decades ago. I didn’t because I knew nothing about the restaurant business, knew no one at the time who did, and was pursuing my career. The new (‘90s) owner has done a great job with it and opened another in Flemington and I think another elsewhere. Very good pizza; different from many other pies but very good.

Thanks for posting! I haven’t made it to Bainbridge Island yet in my 6 years here but now have a reason to take the ferry over there!

I had a pie from Chimney Rock in Flemington not too long ago and it was a big miss compared to what I remember from back in the day. I’ll give it another go soon and chalk it up to a bad day for them.

its good BUT if you like your pizza cheesy and gooey this aint for you. Its on the drier side. I prefer lots of gooey cheese

Parents grew up in Raritan so this was a staple growing up, they use to sell frozen ones at the local supermarkets and they were just as good, 6-8 minutes in the oven and I would eat the entire thing. This place is going to blow up after that monster score.

Sounds like a textbook bar style pizza.

Right? I’m sitting here wondering how far Raritan is from me lol
We have Ralph’s Pizzeria*
Pizza is bomb(as the young kids say)

*Bar Stool pizza review: 8.9… guess he doesn’t love it as much as I do.

One thing I found is that if you have a bunch of different dudes making the pies you'll run into misses. If it's just one or at most a second guy, you're good!

That is so true. Way back in the mid-90's, worked in Parsippany and used to go south on 202 to Morris Plains for this little hole in the wall place called Tony's. The old guy who ran it was, of course, Tony, and he made all the food himself. The meatball pizza and pepperoni pizza was out of this world, every single time. We actually started having our meetings there, we'd run up a tab and our secretary would pay it weekly. Of course they only took cash at the time. Anyway, some time after I left Tony retired and two younger guys took it over. I went there a couple of times, the pizza was still good, but not as consistently fantastic as when Tony ran the place.

I just mapped it from my office in Branchburg on Rte. 22 - 3.9 miles. I'm planning on going into the office in the next week or two, so I might hit that for lunch.

DeLucia’s definitely is it’s own style. Harder/crunchier than just about any other pizza you’ll find. Sauce also has a unique tang too. Really good pizza, no doubt. But I can see where some might not rank it as high as Barstool did.

Yes you are coming from an expat who's lived in New Mexico for the last 27 years. That being said, I'm still happy that we live here.

Wow Delucia’s!!

So growing up in Whitehouse my mom used to take me to their old building as I recall for takeout pies ! Loved it. Many a stop on a Saturday after going to Duke Island Park in the 1980s.

Emptied out and sold my mom’s house a couple winters ago. Bishops Market sold the Delucia’s pizzas there frozen so was a good item to pickup and take home to my house after a day’s work.
Lotsa memories man.

Stan’s Chitch’s still the spot though. I drive there whenever I get in the area once or twice a year for a couple beers and a pie and a few to go.
