His genius is to understand that there are 50 million people who will never vote for him, and he will never ever do anything to change their mind, but the other 100 million "might", especially people who rarely vote. Politicians often seem wishy washing, or two faced because they are attempting to appeal to too many people...Obama for example attempted to compromise with Republicans when he had a majority in congress and everything he did was watered down. He didn't understand that the tribalism of American politics guaranteed that half the population would hate his politics, even if some eventually grew to tolerate him. You aren't making most people cross the isle because politics are tied closely to religion/lack thereof, economics, culture, and family and friendships. To get someone to "switch" requires they endanger all of these networks.
