He didn't understand that the tribalism of American politics guaranteed that half the population would hate his politics, even if some eventually grew to tolerate him. You aren't making most people cross the isle because politics are tied closely to religion/lack thereof, economics, culture, and family and friendships. To get someone to "switch" requires they endanger all of these networks.
