Can’t see any car company, especially one of the Big Two, discontinuing any part for at least 15 years. Especially these days where so many people are keeping their cars for a long time. Would really tick off a lot of people.

This is on my wishlist. But Jersey roads and too many kids makes it really impractical. I would buy the ICE or the EV version.

Is that an SUV?
You think that, if there's already a car doing over 600 miles now, an SUV won't be doing it within the next 5 to 10 years? Hm.

Well, here's the thing. I haven't made any kind of proclamation as to what will actually happen. I just said I'm not getting an EV until it happens. If it doesn't happen in 5, 10, or 20 years, so be it. Not a problem for me. I'm in no kind of hurry at all. If patience is clownish to you, then I'm clownish. 🙂

Do I think it'll probably happen, and closer to 5 years than not? Yep. But I'm far from certain.

Meanwhile, we can let your aggressively stated certainty about the limits of range improvements stand on it's own. Because you're a very serious man. 🤣

Does Ford still put their headrests at an asinine angle for people who either practically lay down in their seat while they drive or have terrible neck posture? In every Ford I've had to drive at various jobs, I've often found myself leaning to one side and putting my head against the side of the headrest to avoid having to uncomfortably angle my neck forward. I don't understand how their cars are so uncomfortable yet so popular.

EVs don't need 600 miles of range to be attractive, but this is very cool nonetheless. I'd love to know more about their battery. As a concept car are they using ultra light weight, expensive material throughout the vehicle? In other words, is this scalable?

I don't think they NEED it, but 600 miles will be well beyond the point where naysayers can bring up range, even in light of road trips and long en-route charging times. For me, 400 miles, across weather ranges, is the point where they'll get attractive. Or 300 with sub-10-minute 10 to 100 percent (not 80) charging.

And no, not readily scalable right now. The EQXX is really a test bed with bleeding edge tech that we won't start to see for at least another cycle or two.

For instance, the battery pack managed to weigh roughly half the weight of the EQS pack despite having nearly the same capacity (100 v 108 kWh, iirc). That was done using tech directly from Formula 1/ E and some type of greeny composite made from sugar Cane and carbon fiber. The active rear aero was derived from an earlier tail-extender concept car from Frankfurt Motor Show a few years back. EQXX CoD is a groundbreaking 0.17.

But it will be interesting to see those types of features become more prevalent moving forward. Just saw Ford talking about adding active aero to its next electric truck.

My ID4 finally came off the assembly line and is being shipped. Estimated delivery is July - Sept. hopefully the NJ EV tax incentiv will be back.

eta: read a blog that said the NJ EV program will get a new allocation with the budget. But the amounts are reduced by 50%.

another ETA: sad to hear that Ford will run of EV tax credit by Q3 this year. Will have to reconsider my F150 Lighting order.

For NJ, you are referring to the rebate that ran out of funding or is the “no sales tax on EVs” gone now too? Just want to be sure I’m not misleading any friends after getting them interested in purchasing EVs through my saving 2 grand each year over the use of gasoline.

No sales tax on zero emissions vehicle doesn’t have an expiration date (to my knowledge). It doesn’t required funding. The NJ Charged Up program is a rebate that requires a budget because it actually gets paid out to the dealership.

Thanks. Just wanted to be sure I understood the meaning of your initial post correctly.

If I get mine by September (long shot?) will I get the federal $7500 tax credit?
Are you at all deterred by the 2023 F150 Lightning having a brand new Android/Google-Sync interface, while the 2022 F150 Lightning having Sync4, which is not upgradeable? I'm mildly peeved, but will probably still take the vehicle. If they run out of $7500 credits, I may pass.

I found the info here. Not sure if it’s reliable. But sounds like you will qualify for some if not all of the federal tax credit. Can’t comment on the interface because I never used it before. Not being able to upgrade seems silly in todays world.

@Knight Shift Yes, I know he is a bit goofy, but I remember seeing this video about the F150 Lightning tax credits. According to him, they will go into early next year. By the way, you may have already mentioned this but did you get a Maverick hybrid or Eco?

Yes, very dumb for Ford to roll out a new model with an old interface, and then replace it in the second model year with no chance of upgrading.
I have Sync3 in my Maverick, and while it has some features I like better than the interface I had on my Audi, one thing that sucks is that when my phone is connected to Bluetooth, I do not get audio alerts on non-text message apps. This may not sound like a big deal, but I have an app for the fire department that gives an audio alert. When connected to Bluetooth, if I am listening to AM/FM, Sirius or from my music library through the plugged in USB, I don't hear the alert. With the Audi Interface, I could select/deselect Bluetooth for media/audio apps.

Thanks. Ecoboost. Wish I had gotten the hybrid. But if we get the Lightning, we will do a lot of our local driving and commute in the Lightning.

Regarding the car’s tech‘s operating system, how much do you really care about digital tech in the car? For me, I really don’t care that much.

I mean, I would care a little when buying it and looking at specs versus other cars, I guess. But when actually driving cars, I doubt seriously I’d ever care about non-automotive tech. The tech in the ECU matters to me. That’s the stuff that deals with ABS or 4 wheel steering or dynamic suspension controls.

But the stuff running behind the car’s display? I haven’t even exercised half of what my newest cars can do. Just not interesting to me.

You gotta wonder, will you ever really notice what OS is running? I probably would not, I’m guessing.

Well, when your phone connects to the car via bluetooth, it is a big deal. I had to resort to turning off bluetooth on the Sync3 in my Maverick. Otherwise, I don't get my fire call alerts. Since the Bluetooth microphone on my Maverick sucks and was put in a stupid place (on the a pillar right behind the windshield), I guess that is another positive.

And if I want to run Google Maps or Waze on the display screen, I must be connected via Bluetooth. But I can just keep the phone disconnected from the system and run Waze off the phone. I did not have these problems with the Audi.

I wonder how many car manufacturers are aware of issues like this. You'd think that first responder types could make this more well known and get them to find a fix.

Bluetooth connectivity is a tech feature I do notice. That's a good point or a good example.

My needs with Bluetooth are very simple - connect to my phone for audio so I can stream Spotify through the car's sound system and do hands-free calls. And that stuff has been working well enough for my simplistic needs in all cars I've had since around 2010.

But I can definitely see where the fire-alerts issue would be problematic for you. That would be pretty irritating and would indeed cause me to pay more attention to the tech offered in new cars.

One frustrating thing is that sometimes tech, that once worked perfectly in even an older car, suddenly stops working after upgrading that phone/table's software or operating system.
