When the ESPN layoffs were going on, Jemele Hill was specifically pointed out by several people online as someone who did not deserve to keep her job when so many other good journalists were getting kicked to the curb. Not because of her gender, race, height, weight, political POV, high school GPA or any other factor other than the fact that anyone who has watched her on ESPN for more than a minute will ask how the hell she ever even got her job. She doesn't know what she's talking about 99% of the time. She does not bring any sort of insight or validity in her arguments when on shows like Around the Horn or OTL. The show "The 6" that took over the 6pm Sportscenter is so out of place for ESPN, it's unwatchable.
Linda Cohn, suspended for honestly answering a question regarding whether talking politics has affected ESPN subscriptions. Curt Schilling, let go for an inappropriate remark about transgenders in bathrooms. I agree with ESPN letting go of Schilling. I do not agree with Cohn being suspended. The issue, among any political reason is that Jemele Hill made a politically and emotionally charged remark about Trump. Yes, it's her personal twitter account. But how many people have been passed up on a job opportunity because of their social media? Crazy drugs/drinking related instagram photos, tweets involving every cuss word out there, comments on FB towards others that are socially unacceptable. People have lost their jobs over things much smaller than Jemele's tweet. Yeah, Jemele absolutely has the right to tweet that about our President. But what always gets overlooked about the First Amendment is that it does not make you immune to any repercussions or consequences. When people throw out the First Amendment, all of a sudden they turn in to Ricky Bobby and think because they said "with all due respect" before their statement that they can say or do whatever they want without any consequences.
She should be suspended without pay at minimum with a strong potential of being fired. Given the platform she has been handed by ESPN and the number of people she can reach out to through her social media BECAUSE of her position at ESPN, she absolutely has to understand that anything she says on her personal twitter account becomes associated with the network and puts them at risk. Any executive at ESPN should understand this.
