There's many reasons for the smoke down to the lower US . Climate change is absolutely making for optimal conditions to make this happen to this degree.

Anyone who thinks differently has their head in a smoke filled cloud
Do you think Canadien budget cuts to forest management and environmentalist opposing controlled burns/management and the forestry industry had anything to do with it? Hell California and Colorado continue to ***** about forest fires but NJ spends much more than them on forest management measures. It’s a lot cheaper to blame it on a different boogey man.

Been working outside all day and Its completely fine out there
At least you're consistently ignorant of public health risks. I was fine being out in it the past two days, also, but these levels of particulates can be very bad for many. My wife went outside for a few minutes and was hacking and sneezing and we were worried we'd have to go to the ER - I'd expect to see ER visits going up during this episode. And there are countless reports of people who have no respiratory issues reported burning eyes, headaches and coughing.

Bergen really cleared out in the last 3-4 hours. Absolutely no comparison to the previous 48.

I was in the city yesterday- from 11am to about 4 pm. Last time I saw it like that was the first few days after 9/11

* But let's clear the air "pun intended" - air quality was worse - yes, but not toxic...this headline was media creating panic
* It would not be a good idea to be working outside all day- it would be like burning leaves in your yard, back in the day. You are ok for a little while but not all day. But also would doubt as a single event to a healthy person, that it would have a long term effect
* If you have problems that are raspatory, heart or even 'cough' - COVID - either wear or mask or stay inside.

Sometimes- just put down the mouse(used to be paper) and use common sense.

And tough guys saying it was no big deal- you are so FOS...just saying

But the panic crowd- listening to media how it is worse that 9/11 - calm down too. No it isn't and wasnt - 9/11 was much worse because of toxins. Use your damn heads

Well, I'd say this post ties a bow on this discussion. We're done here.

All good points, but keep in mind 9/11 was localized to about a square mile of very high smoke/particulates/toxin levels, whereas this wildfire smoke event is impacting over 100,000 square miles with smoke levels that are largely unprecedented for the NE US.

It's funny this subject came up. All my plants have been standing tall the past few days. They seem to love this weather.

Also, while it's obviously true that we've had wildfires forever, it's also clear that the level of wildfires has risen significantly over the last ~40 years, as per a 2016 study (discussed in the NOAA article linked below, along with many other studies linking wildfires to climate change) which showed that the number of large fires in the western US have doubled between 1984 and 2015.

https://www.noaa.gov/noaa-wildfire/wildfire-climate-connection

And while the current situation with the fires in eastern Canada aren't enough to establish any link to climate change (could be a one off - eastern Canada and the eastern US are generally much wetter than western Canada/US), it's absolutely true that eastern Canada has been historically warm and dry this spring.

From my perspective, the wildfire situation has gotten much worse. Of the 10 largest wildfires in California recorded history, eight have occurred in the past 6 years. Thankfully, there have been ~18 months without significant wildfire smoke where I live near Sacramento. However, the next big wildfire is always lurking around the corner. And as all the folks back east understand, wildfires from hundreds of miles away can have a huge quality of life impact.

Thunderstorms can ignite hundreds of fires in their wake. Not unusual.
Exactly. Pretty sure you'll love this great video put together by the Instant Weather Ontario group, clearly demonstrating that a series of t-storms with lightning strikes occurred, followed soon after that by small visible fires, followed a little later by the huge fires we see now, driven by high winds, dry conditions and dry fuels. Not unusual at all, especially in remote areas, where it would be unbelievable to think they all would've been started by humans at around the same time.

This^^^^^^^, To Murphys credit he seems to be listening to his forest Rangers who annually have "prescribed burns". California stopped them long ago and they have annual forest fires and in some years devastating forest fires. Canada from what I have read followed in Californias model and stopped prescribed burns decades ago.
This has nothing to do with climate change and everything to do with bad forest management practices for which we are all paying the price for now.

According to the Canadians, they do have prescribed burns. California, too.

We all know @BROTHERSKINNY simply makes **** up all the time, like his post not long ago claiming more CO2 is produced from volcanoes than human activity, which is completely wrong. There are people who think that people will believe crap, just because that crap is said authoritatively - that tends to only work on weak-minded folks prone to believe in debunked conspiracy theories and we know BS is the king of debunked conspiracy theories.

When people can no longer win arguments on their merit, they resort to spreading lies or attacking legislatures.
