Anyone know a good import car mechanic in the Jackson area? I am trying to get a quote for something on a Volkswagen car.

Thread hijack. Anybody have any input on the reliability of Volkswagen? Particularly the passat. Looking at one for my child.
Another vote for the Accord if you're looking at a car like that.
Just sold one that I had put 215k miles on. It was the entire AC system that eventually gave out and I just decided to put that money toward another ride. I replaced the belts when needed and the brakes once. Car ran like it did the day I took it off the lot. Hell, I never even changed the spark plugs.

Had a Passat. Loved everything about the car. All the extras and the way it drove. However, it had a transmission issue that no one seemed to be able to fix. Had a couple of guys work on it but changed the plugs, plug wires, etc. Spent hundreds but never found the fix. It was not an isolated instance (after looking online) and it definitely soured my taste. Great car other than that.
Also, totaled the same car and walked away without a scratch. That thing is built like a tank (which is a good vote for you with the daughter). My final vote is this. If I lived in a city where I had access to a VW dealer, I would definitely put my kid in that car.

Don't get a VW. Had a Passat for a couple of years about 10 years ago. Loved the car, but it was unreliable as hell. After a couple of years and multiple trips to the repair shop (all warrantied at least), I got fed up with it and went back to Honda. Currently drive an Altima. Just get either an Accord or an Altima. They're both great cars.
Edit: Consumer Reports reliability ratings consistently rank VW as one of the worst brands. It's not just a few guys on a message board that have had problems with them.

I'm with all the others. Accords and altimas are two of the best cars on the road.
Don't bother with a VW. It's the kia of German brands... They are not as reliable as you'd think and they are much more expensive to maintain than an accord or Altima. Many shops wI'll hardly change the oil on a German car, much less do any real work. If you go the European route and you don't want to fool with a dealership, have someone you can take it to lined up because you can't take them just anywhere to have them fixed (or buy parts).
Another cheaper alternative I've heard good things about is a Ford Fusion. I don't know about the new ecoboosts, but the Duratec 2.5 and transmissions (2012 and older) are Mazda setups. those Mazda drivetrains are right there with nissan and Honda.

I drive a VW and love it. Great car, but I will agree with everyone else plugging the Accord. Had one while I was in college- got great gas mileage and any mechanic will work on. Really great car for a college student.
Often I find with my VW I have to go to the dealership.

Just get an Altima from Gray Daniels Nissan North (MSU Sponsor) Ask for a guy named Jake he hooked me up this past summer and he was a state guy.
AB Imports....on Gallatin near the strip joints but has worked on my foreign jobs for years. Great work, great price, great guy.
