It is quite possible that in 2024, Iglesias will have a career average season. That would a 91 OPS+, which by definition is below MLB average. For a glove-first utility player, a 91 OPS+ is quite acceptable.

But there is no way on God's green earth that he is repeating last year's offensive output. I say that BECAUSE of the analytics.

We do not have a 105 scholarship limit. Acquiring Iglesias means a younger player with a higher ceiling doesn't get a shot.

Again, if you can somehow move Marte or McNeil, I will change my tune.
What team would be dumb enough to take on Mart or McNeil with their salaries, lack of production and/or injury history? This is an example of sunk costs and you hope and pray you can get something out of them while they're there. Their salaries aren't that crazy that you can't absorb them and still make moves.

I think I saw that Manaea is now out for a significant time too. And still not looking for pitching help

Baty has been swinging the bat well this spring. Can he play other inf positions besides 3B? I thought I recall hearing he was working out at 2B as well at one point. While I tend to agree there is not a strong need to bring Iglesias back wouldn't that same logic have applied to not signing Madrigal?

Thinking outside the box a little…
Baty will never develop on the bench, and he’s swinging a hit bat in spring training. His value is higher now than it was. Thus…
1. Trade Baty and maybe a prospect for pitching help - Cease?
2. Let acuna go to AAA and continue to develop;
3. Sign OMG.
Not the craziest idea in the world…

They're giving him reps at SS and 2B I believe.

Sarcasm?

Iglesias came off a career year. He will not repeat it. Remember we are talking about the last spot on the bench. I am just as happy with Baty and Acuna competing for that role, with Mauricio joining the mix in mid-April, and likely Jett Williams at mid-season.

Now if the Mets can somehow move Marte and/or McNeil, that's a different story.
And they would like last spot on the bench to have minor league options for flexibility

agree with all of this but I’m just not so crazy about Cease. I wish there was a different pitching target but I’m not sure who that would be.

Castillo from Seattle? But he’s got a big contract.
IMHO, we are wasting Batys potential value in a trade by making him a bench player.

Agree with you about Baty. He’s still young but I have a feeling he’s not going to live up to expectations and his value is still decent for a trade.

The only reason I’d hesitate in trading Baty is if Vientos regresses badly - then you’d give Baty another shot. I believe in Vientos - great kid, bat and arm - but there have been plenty of one year wonders.

DH will be open next season. Baty at 3B with Vientos at DH would be fine if Baty's bat comes alive. I would trade him in the right deal. Cease is better than Castillo but he's upcoming FA.

We’ve got some pitching in the pipeline - and don’t sleep on Matt Allan. Anxious to see if he can rebound this year from the TJ surgery.
Allan has not pitched competitively in five years. If he makes it back into the Top 30 Prospect List, it would be a surprise. If he ever takes the ball on a major league mound, it would be quite the story. But given my limited attention span, I am kinda sleeping on him.

It would be a bonus if he came back.

Curious about Baty with his quick start in spring...Is he capable of taking over 2B? and what is his upside at the plate? Is he considered a potential comparable to Vientos?

Precisely what type of value do you think Baty has, and how much playing time do you want to give him? He's 25, has over 500 ABs in MLB, has a. .214 avg. and a .606 OPS.

Listen, he'll get a shot this year at some point. But to the extent he's not getting a lot of playing time, he earned it.

Trade Baty and he becomes the next Justin Turner! No forking way should they trade Baty.

Baty's potential was considered superior by the people who matter, since they handed him the job. It was Baty's job to lose, which he did.
In other words, it’s the previous Met management that thought he was better. Well, sure. They’re gone, and I presume most are happy about that.

Last year at this time, Brett Baty had been installed as the starting 3B. Mark Vientos had been penciled in as the righty DH, but that ended when they signed JD Martinez. Vientos began the season in the minors.

That was the current Stearns/Mendoza regime.

Although in fairness, neither the current nor the prior regime believed that Vientos had the defensive ability to play third on a regular basis.

Can Vientos platoon?

The poster commented that both Mets regimes didn’t feel Vientos could play regularly based on his defense. But his bat is explosive. They usually platoon guys like that, with the DH now in both leagues

Baty’s D isn’t all that good.

He also showed last year he can play third. Is he a defensive wiz, no but I expect him to improve.

Mets made first cuts today. Only notable cut IMO is Sean Reid-Foley. They will likely bring him back as a non roster player if he clears waivers.

Vientos isn’t going to platoon. Guy had almost 30 HRs and had a ton of clutch hits playing every day.
The things you read on message board, particularly in the spring.

Vientos may be given days when he's a DH. But he ain't platooning.

Look, I hope Baty reverses his performance in the major league over the last 3 years and over 500 ABs. That would be great. But Vientos is going to have to tank this year to lose the 3B job, as it should be after his performance last year.
