Another day where everyone else in the division lost. Braves now a unreal 14 games in the rear view mirror. There are going to be so many Mets fans at Truist Park next week. I may well attend one of the 3 games.

Mets are playing good baseball . I think they're better then the Dodgers right now. As for my Padres they finished the first part of this brutal schedule with a 4-3 road trip to SF and the Brew Crew. ........and that's with absolutely no one hitting outside of Machado. Merrill's below .300 and Tatis has looked so totally lost at the plate (hitting about .250) he was given a day off. They just played 6 one run ball games out of 7 (the other was 2-0). Now its' home for four with LA before 7 more on the road with the D-backs and Dodgers.
I love this game!

Going into the season- I think most of us were so worried about the pitching. and then, more so when we lost 2 starters. But as we have gone through the season, it is almost amazing how consistently good they have been. As you look at this season, you can break it down from starter to reliever, the full season, last 30 days, last 2 weeks, etc...And both relievers and starters have been in a 2.8ish ERA the entire time. And no ebb and flow. There is almost no break down where both groups just have not been in this range.

This has allowed us to not push the good starters into more innings or even over work the BP. And since it has been this consistent, there could be a good chance it stays this way.

And if Pete and Lindor continue on MVP type seasons, Soto keeps hitting and now, even a guy like McNeil is crushing it...what a damn fun season this is shaping up to see.

IMO there is no question that the Mets are better than the Dodgers right now. But... consider Roki Sasaki... Tyler Glasnow... Blake Snell... even Shohei Ohtani. They may all be back on the mound after the All-Star break. That will change everything.

Just as last year, I believe that the road to the Championship will go through LA. But this year, maybe the outcome will be different.

Dodgers better hold off the Padres.

LA has a ton of injuries with their pitching staff, but the Mets are missing two guys expected to be the top of the rotation. It goes both ways.

The league has to do something about deferred money. If the Mets pulled something like this, the league would create a second Cohen rule.

The league does do something about deferred money. For luxury tax purposes, it forces the team to take the present value of the deferral and amortize it over the life of the contract. Shohei Ohtani is getting paid $2M this year. But the Dodgers are being charged $46M in their luxury tax computation.

What more do you want MLB to do? Ban deferrals? Ain't happening without Union agreement. In other words, ain't happening.

Charge them the full rate of $70 million. This kicking the can down the road and dealing with it then is BS. There may be a different owner of the Dodgers stuck with a deal they disagree with. The MLB appears to be an old boys' network. As long as you play by the unwritten rules/codes, you can get away with certain things. A person like Cohen, who is known to rock the boat, will be penalized, as seen with the Cohen tax that came into existence a few years ago.

Exactly- it should be the full evaluation each year. The way it is- they are getting a $24 million dollar luxury tax break. And when the deferrals kick in, the tax threshold will most likely be higher, so it may not really make that much of a difference then.

BTW - I never had hard feelings against deGrom when he left and think it was a good business decision for the Met's. But, he is sort of like if we were to lose Pete next year to someone else- I would always be a fan of theirs.

I love to see what deGrom is doing right now. He has learned that he does not have to go 102 all the time. His pitching skills alone would make him great, even if his fastball was 95. And he is not making a hard push for that 3rd Cy Young. Would love to see him get it.

Seems like verybody has injured pitchers. Musgrove is out for the season with TJ surgery, Darvish hasnt pitched at all this year and now King is hurt

I was saying that for years that he and Syndergaard were great pitchers who started getting arm problems once they started throwing 100+ every pitch. It was too late for Syndergaard but DeGrom was lucky to be in Texas to be able have that great comeback season, pitching the same way he used to pitch before becoming a flame thrower.

Why should a team be charged $70M per year for a contract that has an economic value of $46M per year?

Is the full annual of Soto's contract going dollar for dollar against our luxury tax for each year?
Short answer is yes, because Soto's contract does not include any deferrals.

Longer answer is not exactly, because Soto's contract is not straight line. It is frontloaded. Whereas the luxury tax is straight line. So the Mets are actually getting somewhat of a tax break now, and will make up for it in later years.

The number that matters the most to Cohen
attendance up 13,000 per game

13,000 x $75 =$975,000 x 81 =$78,975,000

Home playoff game 42,000 x ?? $350 ?? $14,700,000 ++

Wow that is interesting. Mets going with only one lefty in the pen. Unlike many of their bullpen churns, this move was not driven by the need for a fresh arm. They must really like Garza. Nothing on his resume suggests he'll be successful at this level. But, the Mets have been right on these types of decisions a lot recently.
