Many folks say it didn’t happenObviously:

It’s funny, I know it was on TV, but for me anyway it seems to transcend that medium and became more than just something we saw on screen.Miracle on Ice
Elvis on Ed Sullivan - for the impact it had
Water cooler talk? That would mean people would have to come into the office. Elevator talk? Nah, people just stare at their cellphones and avoid eye contact. That's what this generation is completely missing out on. Subscription streaming services have killed any sense of national conversation and water cooler talk.

A different world back then. There were 3 major news networks, local news was 30 mins and national news was 30 mins. Today there are hundreds of channels, many 24/7 news channels competing for ratings. Technological innovation and progress changes culture, society . It always has been the driving force of change in the world. The way TV news is supposed to be.

Found that out years later
I remember Jim McKay's intro to the coverage that night and I noticed people celebrating with American flags sneaking into the background. I didn't think much of it at the time and it all made sense later. It was easier to avoid scores back then.I knew it was on tape delay because I had heard a 2nd period score listening to the radio as I was driving. But they didn't even broadcast the whole game, though they did the 3rd period.
Many remember it this way, but during the game broadcast, at period breaks, ABC went to live “man on the street” Reports with a young Jim Lampley in Lake Placid.I, like many others watched the miracle on ice game, not realizing the game was long over, and we were watching it on tape delay

The thing was a win in this game seemed inconceivable at the time. It was documented in the movie, but what was the score of that exhibition loss a little while before the Olympics, 10-3?Many remember it this way, but during the game broadcast, at period breaks, ABC went to live “man on the street” Reports with a young Jim Lampley in Lake Placid.
While he did not give away the result, the large crowd around him chanting USA really should have been a giveaway.
Yeah it went over my head too. But we should have known!
WKRP episode with the Turkey drop was one of the greatest things I have ever seen. Still laugh when I think about it“Who shot JR?” episode on Dallas.
The “WKRP in Cincinnati” Thanksgiving episode.
