thank God we're in the premier football conference

the reality is that if the ncaa had not been blind for so long then this would most likely not have happened. Title ix be damned as well

I think the existing TV contracts might be what saves fringe schools such as Rutgers NW Vanderbilt etc from being included. I would think the “great split” would have to be a conference collective decision due to the existing contracts . Otherwise , the top brands / bluebloods would just go play with themselves. And also maybe some school Presidents speak up and say this is going too far and don’t want to be a part of housing a professional team within their academic institution

This is kind of what I thought would happen as the NIL ecosystem (for lack of a better word) is not sustainable:

"Evans acknowledged to the group that university donor collectives are using NIL rules — originally meant for commercial and endorsement opportunities — as “a form of pay-for-play” that circumvents a traditional pay system, such as employment.

“We’ve gotten around it by going this route,” he said.

However, the farce is nearing an end.

There is an ongoing, aggressive push to make college athletes employees, including a court case in Pennsylvania and a complaint before the National Labor Relations Board."

It was referenced in the article too but with all the crazy coaching contracts and deals, it's just too unseemly and gaudy for players not to want their cut as well and I don't blame them. But employment also comes with pluses and minuses.

It is only a matter of time . The path was set many years ago and all these events are just the predictable dominoes falling to a very predictable outcome.

What I am curious about is .. does this continue to exist under academic institutions. It will become its own professional sports league with complicated contracts for many more people now trying to fit into the pretend context of being scholars. Will the contracts require them to be taking classes , will they have the rights to become free agents (sorry “transfers”) in the new context of contracts. Sure the schools want the money and marketing - but this is becoming so far detached from the school that at some point I wonder if even alumni question why they stick with the minor league team named after their schools mascot

Has to remain connected to the universities or interest would dwindle. The tie in to the colleges is what makes the following in the first place.

Agreed . That’s where I see the future issues starting to form and potentially reverse course. When regulation or presidents say this professional sport can no longer coincide inside an academic institution. Then it gets reallly interesting how this plays out

I wonder if most Rutgers fans want us to continue playing professional football under the university umbrella?

Does going this route eliminate the need for athletic scholarships and Title IX compliance?

The colleges just don't want to be regulated but the ncaa was forced on them because they were out of control. Their current behavior hardly suggests they've learned anything after 100 years. They want to be like the NFL but without a head office.

Reminds me of the old NIBL Basketball League , where employees of companies played basketball all across the nation against another company's basketball team.

It can but if the athletes aren’t students the system risks suffering major identity issues. Simply put - a sports program in the name of a school makes no sense if the athletes are students of the university in some capacity.
