Really solid actor. Besides Officer, also did Roots, Raisin in the Sun, Blue Chips and bunch of others. Who would rather have as drill sargent, him or R Lee Ermey?

RIP. Also on 2 episodes of Rockford Files. One with the great Isaac Hayes, who died way too young.

My favorite movie with Louis Gossett Jr. actually made me appreciate him more than ever . “Enemy Mine”. A depiction of two space travelers who find they need each other in order to survive far from home. RIP Mr. Gossett .
The costumes were creepy, and the “male” aliens get pregnant. Weird movie.

Sad news. He was awesome. The story I heard yesterday about when he first got to Hollywood and how poorly he was treated was disturbing. But he rose above to shine. RIP Mr. Gossett.

There have been many memorable movie drill sergeants throughout film history, each bringing their own unique style and personality to the screen. Some of the best movie drill sergeants include:

1. Gunnery Sergeant Hartman (played by R. Lee Ermey) in "Full Metal Jacket" (1987) - Ermey's portrayal of the tough and uncompromising drill instructor is iconic, and his performance in the role is often regarded as one of the greatest in cinematic history.

2. Sergeant Major Plumley (played by Sam Elliott) in "We Were Soldiers" (2002) - Elliott's portrayal of the seasoned and stoic sergeant major provides a sense of calm and leadership amidst the chaos of war.

3. Sergeant First Class Hulka (played by Warren Oates) in "Stripes" (1981) - Oates' portrayal of the tough but ultimately caring drill sergeant adds humor and heart to this classic comedy.

4. Sergeant Emil Foley (played by Louis Gossett Jr.) in "An Officer and a Gentleman" (1982) - Gossett Jr.'s portrayal of the hardened yet ultimately supportive drill instructor earned him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

5. Sergeant Barnes (played by Tom Berenger) in "Platoon" (1986) - While not a traditional drill sergeant, Berenger's portrayal of the intense and morally ambiguous squad leader leaves a lasting impression.

These are just a few examples of memorable movie drill sergeants, but there are many others who have left their mark on film with their unforgettable performances.
