No country where women can walk around public beaches wearing 2 piece bathing suits described as anal floss or with a thin strip of fabric over their birth canal can be described as socially conservative.

As they currently stand the results surprise me. Based on the posting here I thought the Democrats would have a significant majority. BTW, I indicated independent.

The fact that your vote, especially in national elections, is worthless if your state is either blue or red has turned a lot of people off. The Electoral College should be eliminated. The actual popular vote should be the only decider of who won. I live in NY as an Independent. I vote, but I know for a fact that NYC will decide the outcome every time for the Democrats. So, if I want to vote for a Democrat, the vote is really unnecessary. If I want to vote for a Republican, I may as well stay home. I have often voted for third party candidates as both my true choice and as a rebellion against the system.
As the saying goes, democracy stinks but it is better than the others.

I agree with this for the most part, since the notion seems to reflect myself and close friends decently well. But have you looked around us? Normal is not making short-sighted decisions with regard to school choice/cost, spending habits,and/or depending way too much on ones parents, then whining and passing blame around when personal finances get difficult and life doesn't go one's way.

Fiscally conservative, socially progressive = independent.

I'm a registered Democrat who considers himself an Independent and votes Republican around 90% of the time (especially for NJ state and local elections, where NJ Dems don't give a crap about taxpayers).

No it equals a Libertarian. www.lp.org
Not necessarily - they can define themselves as they want, but there is some benefit to government more than just a bare minimum. Moreover, many libertarians I've talked to see no benefit in government. Independents see more of the whole picture, which is why they are gaining more steam. People are tired of the idiotic dogma of the current political system.

I registered as a Democrat just to vote for Rush Holt in the special senate election primaries two years ago, but I'm closer to a socialist/Green than the centrist Democratic majority.

What the hell are you talking about? I vote, period! The facts as I stated are true and our founding fathers had no idea how distorted our political system would become. As for "keeping my Demos (?) to myself", this is a DEMOCRATIC forum and I will say what I please without your approval!

Sorry no. The EC is one of the protections against the tyranny of the majority.

Seems to me this board is way skewed Left. Surprised at the poll.
That's because you're skewed way right. Poll is about exactly where I thought it would be, since football fans skew a little right of the actual population. Post this poll on the CE board and it would be about 50-23-22, Rep/Dem/Ind (as opposed to 39/33/23 on this board), since that board skews way, way right, as we all know.

Maybe you should learn yourself some history. Look up Athenian democracy and see what an idiotic proposal like yours can result in.

I didn't say you couldn't spout off, just that your proposal is horrible.

I see this a lot coming from the right now. They have gone so far right that they think everyone to the left of them is a communist.

We may have to fix the republicans and democrats, but someone actually told me a long time ago why a two party system is best. Lets say its a three party system and the third party is called the whatever party. Then in a election the whatever party won 40% to 30% to 30%. That means that 60% of the country voted against the whatever party yet they are in power. You can see how much worse and worse it gets when more and more parties are added.

You could apply the same reasoning and say that 70% of the country voted against the other two parties, so which one was the most popular? Anyway, the voting system we use now is probably as bad as it gets for determining a winner. Range voting would be much better, where you rate each candidate on a score from 1-10 or 1-100 for example, and the person with the highest average wins. This way you can express how much you approve or disapprove of each choice. Currently, you can only express approval of only one choice, and everyone is disapproved equally, which is usually not reflective of people's feelings.

I can't understand how anyone thinks that having only two choices is the best way to go. That is only one choice more than having no choice at all, yet we brand ourselves as the beacon of democracy. As the current state of affairs shows, you can't encompass all political views in just two parties, and more importantly--what do you do when the party that is supposed to represent your views does a horrendous job of doing so, as the Democrats and Republicans do? Suppose you only had two choices in every decision you have to make in your life and think of how much you could be missing out on.

Based on the rantings on this board, I'd guess those who called themselves Independent are really Republicans.

I have no problem with socialism. None.

Not having any problem with socialism indicates incredible naïveté from never having lived in a country that fully implemented the system (such as Soviet Russia, or flat out ignorance. I'll be damned if that was repeated in this country, which my family came to for opportunity afforded by capitalism and a relative lack of religious discrimination (sadly that seems to be changing for the worse).

Labour.

The problem with the term "socialism" is that people have radically different ideas of what it means. For some, it is basically synonymous with communism, a system where the government controls the means of production.

For others, it means that some aspects of society are controlled publicly, but that the means of production are generally private. We have federal defense, interstate roads, social security, postal, aspects of education, parks, health and safety regulations, environmental controls, air traffic control, and so on. The question then becomes should we have federalised health care, or some combination of public/private, more federal control of education, etc. Should the federal government fund higher education?

Obama's economic team was fairly middle of the road, with a number of holdovers from the Bush administration. Thus calling him a socialist from the first definition is pretty silly. But from the second definition, he clearly has moved the country toward more public control, more socialism. The only problem here, in my mind, is to use the second definition to try to tar somebody from the first definition.

Repub for now. Fiscal conservative social liberal

Raised Catholic. Now an atheist.

The religious right in this country makes my skin crawl.

Because both parties spend like drunken sailors I will probably start to vote Dem before I die.

They used to hide it but Dems are now pubicly socialist. I can't have this country turn into a South American mess. I'll probably stick with the repubs. At least they fight wars and not run from them.

Major blocks of this globe have taken steps to tilt their male/female ratios towards males, there is going to be major upheavals as a result.

I am glad I am dead in 30yrs.

Interesting. Never heard it put like that.
