I forgot the names of the books but I read 2 good books about those attacks

I can’t recall the name of both books (I read 2 on the topic several years ago). However the better of the two was “Twelve Days of TERROR” by Richard Fernicola, a NJ dentist. It was a fascinating read and HIGHLY recommend for awesome insight into NJ history in 1916. It provided must read details about the NJ shore before air conditioning and while Polio raged through society, it explains why there is a 7 Presidents Park, it talked about NJ as a go to destination (even being considered the Summer White House” for a few presidents during a stretch of time). A must read for RU and all Jersey residents. You’ll never again drive past mile marker 119 on the GSP and muddy little Matawan Creek without thinking about shark attacks.

The hysteria of the day, including a Jaws like shark rodeo that ended up landing a Great White in NY waters that “may have“ had human remains in its digestive system led to the conclusion that all 5 deaths in those 12 days were due to a single great white. The more reasoned modern view is that a Bull shark was more likely the culprit (at least in Matawan).

I encourage you all to read the book, you won’t be disappointed!

Edit: I believe the second book I read was “Close to Shore” by Michael Capuzzo
