Thank you China! I’m sure it was an accident that the lantern flys happened to hitch that ride to Eastern PA.
Invasive species coming here is nothing new. Stink bugs are one of many examples. If they were going to do this on purpose, I'm sure they would have sent some sort of insect that is actually harmful to humans.

Jersey City a 2x2 square on the sidewalk in front of my building will have at least 10 lantern flys, they are every where. They land on my window on 29th floor. There are 100’s on the ground in front of the building, some dead, some live.

There definitely was a lot less lightning bugs this year. I think we had another thread where I mentioned I didn't see them until July. Usually you start to see them by mid-June.
Also the big, long legged mosquitos we had as a kid. They were slow moving and easy to avoid. I’ve seen maybe one or two all summer. Now it’s those little f’ers who I dont even know are on me until they’re biting me

We have these tiny dark ones I never recall seeing before and like you say they are biting before you see them and before dusk. Very annoying

Nothing escapes my free ranging Chickens and Turkeys. Once they hit the ground they’re toast.
Well you gotta start increasing the number of livestock on your farm. By the way, you got any blue hens for tailgating?

No but I could always spray paint one. However, I do have a breed which lays blue eggs.

YES! Good news. I also saw a robin eat one… now a few million more 😉

Either that or they might send some kind of virus that could be lethal to 665,000 Americans and eventually shut the world down. 🤔

That would be too obvious…they sent COVID instead.

Yeah sure, if you're trying to release a virus into another country, of course the best way to do it is to release it among your own population first with the hope that it eventually spreads to the intended destination.

Have you ever seen an infested tree? They number in the hundreds, if not thousands.

Tons in Camden County. One day my wife and I killed about a hundred on a Silver Maple in our yard. 50/50 Dawn soap and water in a spray bottle will kill them eventually. It also slows them down so they get stomped in my yard.

I never heard of these things until I saw this thread. Then this am, I found an article, or should I say big tech provided an article on IG about one being found in the Midwest. Scientists have no idea hit it got there.

Pretty sneaky if so right?? In all actuality though, I was trying to interject a little levity into the conversation.

I used to see these all over Jersey City. Haven’t seen them at least around my place for a while.

These guys are ruining my arborvitae trees. Any advice on keeping them away, or anything to spray on the trees so they don't get killed?

I have literally killed thousands of SLF in the last 2 months (mostly on my maples and birches) using one of these. About 150-200 a day! But they keep coming. It is also more fun then it should be. Each one eliminated (assuming half lay eggs) is about 50 less next year. Happy hunting.

Wrap duct tape (sticky side out) around tree trunks. Cover with some sort of mesh barrier so the lanternflies still get to the tape but other things (i.e. birds) don’t meet a sticky end.

These little bastards seem to be moving. I’m in southern Hunterdon County and the last two years they were everywhere. This year has not been as bad.

The stink bugs this year are another story. Never seen this many.

Any video of shooting a lanternfly with it? I was thinking about making a crude rubber band gun.

I have a cool slo-mo of shooting one (but I don’t know how to post my own photos/videos since I don’t use a sharing service). They are lethal to about 12-18 inches, but you can get with 2 or 3 inches on the lower ones. For those out of reach, up to about 5 feet above my gun reach, the salt spray makes them jump (usually downwards) so you hit them again when they land or step on them (remember they only jump 3 times then need to regain energy... that’s when you step on them). Unfortunately I see many out of reach up high in the trees (for anything above 12’ I have hit them with a hose to move them within range, but have only been partially successful). With the numbers I’m seeing next year is going to be bad.

I agree. We live right on the Somerset-Hunterdon border and remember first seeing them two years ago in Hunterdon. Now not only am I seeing them in my yard, but all over Princeton on my walks at lunchtime. My youngest son, a senior at RU, says they are all over New Brunswick now too.

I’m in Rahway today and I’ve seen quite a few down here. I stomped on around 5 in the liquor store parking lot on St. George’s Ave before heading over to my buds house, killed one poolside. I’m happy he doesn’t close his pool til November

Mind you by my place I haven’t seen any yet

We're overrun here in Sourland Mountain area.
Im on the west Amwell side of rt. 31 but I. East. Like 02 we had a bunch last year. Not so much this year. They must have jumped across the highway.

But unfortunately I did have about 200 stink bugs on the back side of my house last weekend.

No cicada. So I guess going 1 fer 3 isn't too bad.
