I was at the Spring lake beach this past Tuesday and Wednesday
On Tuesday the beach had many and it bothered the beach goers quite a bit

on Thursday there were none

Guess it matters which way the wind blows?
That is true in places like Island Beach State Park.. wind from the west (the bay) in Summer brings biting flies. You check the weather and see if you can tell if there will be a wind out of the west before you bother going.. it can get so bad.

Guess there are no biting fly breeding grounds west of Spring Lake.. but lanternflies.. yes. As I mentioned above.. they like the Tree of Heaven, a Chinese import frm back in Colonial times (as an ornamental tree), and clearings made for railroads and other reasons seem to attract those trees.. good for them to grow.

Not that many in my yard this year. Few enough that I can shoot them with rubber bands stretched on a yard stick and really thin them out and it is sort of fun.

Up here in Bergen, I have seen/killed less than 10 this year. I assumed it was just a later season for them this year. I am hoping to not see many more. It seems when we have the heavy rains they seem to disappear.

So far not anywhere near the number as last year by me here in Bergen County. Early summer there was lots of tiny ones...although less than the previous season. That abated and I started to see only full-grown ones, but in way smaller numbers. The last few days hardly any at all.
I'm terminating most of them.
It's funny I had never seen the tiny ones before. I thought they were some weird spider/tick at first. Overall it seems they are easier to kill this year / more on the smaller side.

A couple of weekends back we went kayaking in Spruce Run. Oddly enough, the little buggers were scattered all over the surface of the reservoir water and far from shore. 😬

I found dozens of them on first two feet of a tree.
Spraying them with Dawn/water mix chased them off but they were back the next day

Ugly , duct tape around bottom of tree. Sticky side out of course.
OR
Home dept and Lowe’s are now selling a tape that you wrap your tree with. Like a sticky mouse trap for lantern flies

I look forward to stepping on some next week when I visit Jersey
Was out on the water at Spruce run res. today and last Sunday. There are a good amount of them out on the water but much much less than last summer and the summer before that.

I saw another 2-3 around my house yesterday here in Bergen. I also saw a few on the golf course. I don't think we are out of the woods yet but am hoping the September tailgates in Yellow are not infested like a year or so ago.

Between this year and last Ive noticed lanternflies like to congregate near buildings and concrete

They were all over the bleachers and walkways at my town rec center yesterday, and I remember there being literally thousands went I visited the statue of liberty last fall

Fun to kill

We had dinner outside near Madison Sq Park last night and they were all over the place, dive-bombing every table except ours for some reason. It was kind of funny.

Also, the hillbilly in me finally finally decided to get a salt gun. Fun and it actually works

Salt gun
I got one of those a couple years ago. Usually takes a few shots for bigger insects like lanternflies, so I take out their wings with the first shot and then aim for their head.

I found a wasps nest in my dryer vent today. I sprayed Raid in the hole before stuffing it with a paper towel and then spent the next 2 hours sniping wasps trying to re-eneter the now-closed hole like a psycho. A few neighbors stopped by asking what I was doing. I must have killed 100 wasps, reloaded the salt 4 times. The ones that dropped out of the sky spinning down like shot-down ww2 warplanes were the most satisfying. Even killed 2 random lanternflies that stopped by

So much fun for a mid 40s Dad on a lazy Sunday lol
