One of my favorites. We saw her years back at the Paramount Theater in Asbury Park.
Great show. Incredible voice.
Troy from the album The Lion and The Cobra is still one of my all-time favorite tunes.
Other of my favorite tunes by her are The Emperor's New Clothes , Feel So Different, and of course Nothing Compares 2U... all from her album I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got.
And also her excellent cover of Peter Tosh's classic Downpressor Man off of her album Throw Down Your Arms.
She sure suffered from her personal demons, but gave us so much great music.
Sad.

Never got to see her, but that voice was an incredible instrument on its own. Was actually a bigger fan of her first album (the Lion and the Cobra) than her mega-hit second album (I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got), as I really liked "Troy," "Mandinka," and "I Want Your (hands on me)." Her cover of Princes's "Nothing Compares 2 U" was amazing, but I didn't think the whole 2nd album was better than the first album. Didn't really follow her career much after that and yes, she was a troubled soul, as many artists seem to be.

Really? I know of exactly 1 song by Sinead O'connor and mostly know her for her antics outside of the music world. I think she was a tortured soul and she repeatedly stated that she never sought fame and I believe her.
I know she was living in some NJ flea bag motel for some time and then went back to Ireland. RIP Sinead, Hope you find the peace that escaped you in this earthly life.

I agree. I love "the Lion and the Cobra". Great from start to finish.

Textbook one hit wonder artist and troubled soul. Honestly, I thought she was already dead, but maybe I'm thinking of the singer from the Cranberries.

Regardless, RIP. Hoping she found some peace and happiness prior to passing.

You not appreciating her music is kind of irrelevant, since Sinead has tons of fans that helped her have four top 40 albums, including her huge 2nd album, which went to #1 in dozens of countries around the world, featuring one of the biggest singles of the era, which many list as a top 100 all-time song.

Great voice.

Number of catchy hits.

Liked the first couple of albums but never really thought of her after that.

I remember reading she eventually refused to play Mandinka I guess because she got sick of it.

Always liked that song. Many others were great.

Sinead was not a one hit wonder. She had plenty of stuff that was popular on alt rock playlists. She was the IT girl for a year. People are taking her fall from grace and eliminating her impact on music. She had 4 very solid albums,

I love Dolores and both her and Sinead had demons from abuse but Sineads were a bit darker. SImilar voice but very different in where they went with their music. Sad that the two biggest Irish rock singers ended up dying young. Dolores was a big fan of Sineads

Is it?
1 hit written by Prince. Disrespected the Pope on national TV with a juvenile hissyfit. Never apologized. Not heard from in nearly 25 years. Long-suffered from depression and other mental issues. May she RIP.

we found something to agree upon...the follow up album had a great song called Fire on Babylon and she also did a great cover of Success Has Made a Failure of Our Home.

She completely revamped/changed the Prince song to make it her own, so there's that. And she had four albums chart in the US top 40, with the 2nd one being #1 worldwide - and in the alternative music world she mostly inhabited, those are pretty good stats (including many songs that got significant airplay on alternative radio). By comparison, Kate Bush, who was just inducted into the RRHOF had 4 US top 50 albums (and none nowhere near #1, although she did do better in the UK).

And I don't really give a crap about her tearing up that pic of the Pope on TV - it was juvenile, but understandable from her perspective (probably enough on that without derailing the thread).

As I've said before, outside of politics, we agree on most things, especially sports and a fair amount on music. Also a big fan of the Cranberries, as I know you were.

Wow. On Monday I was walking around whistling "Nothing Compares To You" for no apparent reason whatsoever.
For some reason- Nothing Compares To You is usually in my head if I am up late. I think it is because I worked overnights in the late 80’s when it was playing all the time.
Great song but very haunting in its melody

The song is written in F major, so it's going to sound a little more dissonant than what you're accustomed to hearing from pop songs. It also makes use of the vii chord (Emin7b5) which is, again, unusual in the pop genre.

"Dreams" was used by the videographer for all the extras in our wedding video.

Song has a special place in my heart.

OK, Ocean Spray Cranberries crush girl . 😂

Whoopty do about completely revamping the song of a master musician and artist.
Alternative, schmalternative. She was a pop singer that got lumped in with alternative because she shaved her head. I hate that label. It's a convenient crutch for bands that do not have wider success, which she enjoyed with a revamped song.

Of course you don't give a crap the picture and your "understanding" of her.

But I brought two usually warring foes together for a bro hug, so kudos to me for that.

To be clear, I pitied her. She was an artist with some obvious vocal talent. She was tortured, unhappy and depressed. May she rest in peace as I said in my OP. Don't know why you feel the need to mansplain everything with your worldview. Peace out.

The revamp made it her song, IMO and most of my post was disputing your weak attempt at downplaying her level of success, which was on a par with another artist who's in the RRHOF. Her music stands on its own and the rest is noise - as with most artists, I care very little about their politics or personas. If you don't like her music, that's your choice - I do.

she was a talented tortured soul that many didn't understand and her mental problems were out for all to see and she talked about them
Her actions with the Pope's picture was because of the way she felt how the Catholic Church handled it's child abuse problem and maybe because of how she felt she was treated when in the Grianán Training Centre for eighteen months which was run by the Catholic order Our Lady of Charity.

Her talent was great, her problems many
but this is a fitting tribute to her as a talent and a person

Irish President releases statement

Michael D. Higgins, the President of Ireland, has shared a statement remembering Sinéad O’Connor.

“May I send my deepest condolences to Sinéad O’Connor’s father John, the members of her family and to all those with whom she shared her life," the statement begins.

"My first reaction on hearing the news of Sinéad’s loss was to remember her extraordinarily beautiful, unique voice.

"What was striking in all of the recordings she made and in all of her appearances was the authenticity of the performance, while her commitment to the delivery of the song and its meaning was total.

"To those of us who had the privilege of knowing her, one couldn’t but always be struck by the depth of her fearless commitment to the important issues which she brought to public attention, no matter how uncomfortable those truths may have been."

I see her in same bin as Alanis Morissette
Unique voice and songs.
Both extremely memorable but came and went pretty much
Sinead had all the demons.
I don't blame her - not knwing her story - but I have no surprise a young song killed himself

Been wondering that for years. Five top 30 albums, a couple of top 5 hits and several other top 40 hits. Unique sound and very good live band. Should be in already, but haven't even been nominated, which is a real travesty.
