I think China is also learning that you can't hide war and control the narrative with social media, smart phones, and streaming (which the citizens of Taiwan have access to just like Ukrainians). Russia and China like to conduct their business in the shadows. This is not possible any more with conflicts between nations.
Ukraine should just live stream the mayhem 24/7…let the whole world tune in. You’d think the Ukrainian press would be posting video after video.
I kind of figured my optimistic view above was a little deep in naivety.
But let's see if it sticks, the market has shaken off early losses the past couple of trading days.
NATO alliance: an attack on one member is an attack on all members.
At least 50-50 chance that tomorrow ends up green. CLs love to dump in extended markets. LOL!

I'm up about 7% from my lows on Thursday(Thursday right), so 2.2% sounds pretty modest. One might expect that type of move from short term trading.
Ukraine internet is pretty sketchy now. Musk opened Starlink to them but you need certain tech to access it.
One thing really kicking butt are the Turkish Bayraktar TB2 drones (acquired 2019). Russian tanks and vehicles rolling down streets are just sitting ducks. A good bit of video released by Uke military comes from drone cameras. The drone can be far and high so you see soldiers getting hit with no idea they are targeted
EU said to be providing planes and weapons to Uke. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said no Russian planes in EU air space (including commercial). US State Dept said Americans should leave Russia. People who have fought Russians say to be careful of the paramilitaries that can be brought it. That's when civilians get it

Futures were negative Friday morning and I thought going long into the weekend would keep things negative or muted but you saw what happened. We were kind of short term oversold though. I’d say after the last two trading days we could be short term overbought. But who knows, the only thing you can be sure of is volatility remains.

UKR is a damn big country! Putin can never hold it with 44 million people fighting. Doubt he has a clear endgame.

One vid I just aw was funny because Ukrainians drove up on a Russian vehicle with no fuel, and the Ukrianians said they would help them if they drove back to Russia. Everybody laughed. You get the sense the Ukes and Russians weren't particularly hostile to each other before this.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Russians and URK'ers probably are not "enemies". Many Russian soldiers are there because that was their orders, not because of hatred or desire to attack them.

Thanks for posting since watching the news is a total waste of time. They barely cover the actual war.

Curiously, everybody is taught about how armies die in Russia because they cant keep supplies going. So how is it Russia runs out of fuel so easy. You can tell its been a massive problem for Russia

Places like reddit are better than TV. You have people from all over who know the language and the machinery.
In the drone vid I put up the guy making the video is cursing out the Russians . People translated it like this

Apparently the strike was on the Chechens heading to Kiev to get the president. Somewhere around 100 were killed. Some of the bodies already made it back home. Military guys saying that without air dominance these convoys rolling down the street are sitting ducks
The vehicles have a big "V" painted on them to designate they were from eastern military district

The way the world united on this leads me to the opinion that the lesson of appeasement is burned in our collective memories.
I also think the Ukrainian population has been taught the horrors of Stalin from the time of their birth.
I had a good friend of Ukrainian heritage who passed away a few years ago and we used to have very interesting discussions about his family history.

Sure. I think there's maybe a little paradigm shift after this and there could be a sustained increase in defense spending across the west which obviously benefits the defense sector. Most probably thought, myself included, this couldn't happen in this day and age but we're seeing it happen. In that case, then I'd expect preparedness is important.
Who supplies Germany with equipment? They just jacked up their military budget. Regardless of the conflict, good to see so many nations come together against Russia. I'm sure China is taking notes.

Well I'd figure the usual names will benefit....LMT, RTX, NOC, GD. Maybe even Boeing. Airbus, BAE and Thales are other defense sector names in Europe.Trying to figure out the companies.

There's an aerospace and defense ETF as well since you like those. XAR It's not up as much as some of the specific names though.
The way Russia is organized at a Corps or Army level is why they have so many problems. Russia reorg’d their army into Battalion Tactical Groups a number of years ago which are highly effective in low intensity conflict but are very vulnerable in large scale, high intensity operations.
The reason many people, myself included, didn’t think there would be a full invasion is because literally every single thing that has happened since zero hour has happened exactly as expected. Russia isn’t capable of effectively fighting this conflict and never was, and this will likely bring about the end of Russia as a semi-superpower. What becomes of their nuclear status is an unknown. Why Putin would voluntary sacrifice his entire country, a move that is tremendously out of character for him, is really beyond me. I understand his/their concern Ukraine’s nuclear ambitions, but they chose the worst possible way to rectify it.

Don't lose sight of impending Fed rate hikes. Looking at 1% cumulative rate increase by June: .50+.25+.25 ??? Inflation here to stay for a good while. Economy to slow thru 1Q23. Fed to further raise rates at least another 1% in the interim. "Stagflation."
