You can buy NJ and DC and the INTEREST is tax exempt. If you buy at discount, the principal repayment over your basis is taxed as capital gains. You can actually buy other states but you only get the federal tax exemption.
If you buy at a premium to par, is that considered a capital loss?

So, I guess it makes sense to buy at par or above with the highest coupon rate. Does that sound right?

Muni bonds are fed tax free and state tax free if you live in the state that issued the bond (i.e. NJ tax free for NJ munis if you live in NJ, NY munis not NJ tax free for NJ residents). If you can get them below par and want to hold to maturity, that would be a win. I buy callable muni bonds based on yield to next call (one of my advisors specializes in muni bonds and is quite accurate as to when they will be called). Callable munis have higher interest rates than non-callable munis.
Got it, very interesting. Yes, I noticed that callable munis have the best rates.

The Disney rally was due to the potential of Disney+, but its stock crash was mostly due to how unprofitable it has been since starting it years ago. Can Disney+ actually make money? We shall see! Not sure.
EVERYONE knew D+ was an unprofitable disaster and cannibalized streaming revenue/deals. IMO the BS rally was simply stock market newbies buying something they knew and loved as part of the massive COVID run-up. Which def worked. Heck, my clueless 16 year old daughter got an A+ in her Finance class because she finished the year in first place for the investment assignment = she blew everyone in her class away sticking to what she likes/knows such as Lulu, Sbux, Chipotle, Meta, etc. Beat my pathetic performance by a mile. That was eye opening for me.

BTW, re: Disney, I didn’t realize what a trainwreck The Marvels is at the box office and look no further than the characters. Iger actually thought MCU fans would run out to see the three amigas? Who the hell is the intended audience? Obviously nobody because that’s who showed up at theaters.

setting aside the woke angle, it’s just poor allocation of capital and terrible decision making. That movie was was a.money loser the second they started filming. It’s the equivalent of making an American Girl Doll movie and the three main characters are boys. Wouldn’t be surprised if Disney retests the $80s at some point.

Did u see what they are doing with the new Silver Surfer movie? More woke stuff sadly. They already postponed the new Snow White because it was getting a ton of pushback. They try so hard to push an agenda the quality goes down.

It’s pretty funny actually. The plan all along with the “woke” releases was to attract major ESG investment that would far surpass the earnings hit from a boxoffice flop (which Disney knew all these releases would be). So far, that investment has not materialized.

Given he returned to the gig of CEO in Nov of 2022, the movie was certainly already in the works.

People did know it was unprofitable, But the disaster part? C'mon.

And your anecdote, ie your Daughter buying what she knows, goes against what you are railing against in terms of "newbies" buying Dis. Your contradicting yourself within a single paragraph.

My daughter's "portfolio" is rocking it YTD. Our little one selected:

VTI 30% and then 7 stocks at 10% (AAPL, GOOGL, DIS, McDonalds, Chipotle, Starbucks, and Roblox). Damn thing is crushing the S&P 500. Up about 25%.

ENPH back over $100. After it's big bounce after the CPI report(which signaled lower interest rates are coming) I've been waiting for a little pull back. But it keeps climbing.

25x P/E. EPS expecting to be flat into 2024, with potential for returning to growth beyond that.

FYI - Mark Newton is super bullish on gold and metals now. Also added TXT and AXON to his Upticks List (stocks that look bullish from a TA perspective).

No, I said that strategy worked during the COVID run up for newbies and worked for my daughter. It was eye-opening for me because it takes zero investment research or effort.

AI induced Santa Claus rally is already in effect. MSFT is a HODL and add. Recent soap opera had almost no impact interestingly. Seem to have a hard floor of $360 (and lots of buying comes quickly below $370) unless economic data really surprises or they print a bad quarter for some reason. Still hoping Putin gets what he has coming before the New Year in order to start 2024 out right.

I own JNUG, MP, and LTHM.

All in the red.
CVX finished the day positive. Bought those call options when it was nicely red. Up a quick 10%. :)

I definitely think there is a lithium play to make. EVs and Li have been beaten down so much, it's ripe for a rally. Perhaps a leap call with one of the miners?

That strategy, or at least the group of LULU, SBUX, META, and CMG, would have FAR outperfomed the market if someone bought them in 2010.

LTHM is 7x P/E. EPS expected to be down slightly into 2024, but then strong growth beyond that.

Chart looks like crap, falling knife since July, but maybe showing the beginning of a bottom.

Morningstar is super bullish on LTHM ($38 FMV) and ALB ($300 FMV). However, the reports indictable the Li market to start turning the corner well into 2024. So, perhaps we need some patience? Or leap calls! :)
