The game would have continued into another overtime period. This from NFL operations:

  • If the score is still tied at the end of an overtime period — or if the second team’s initial possession has not ended — the teams will play another overtime period. Play will continue regardless of how many overtime periods are needed for a winner to be determined.

Difference was QB play at the end. Purdy needs to season more. Mahomes is clutch.

Think 49ers made a mistake by winning coin toss and taking the ball. This format is more like college, you want to know what you need when you get the ball. KC knew they had to go on 4th down.
Only thing I can think of, is they wanted to give their D a rest as they were just on the field.

On another note do we really need the Olympic torch passing of the Lombardi trophy?

Yes and no. Their defense was just on the field to end regulation.

Maybe they needed a rest but still think it’s a big advantage to know what you need to do. College teams never take the ball first.

Mahomes and Reid too good in 4th
Mahomes cant be rattled at all.
Lamar MVP? Hah to that.

KC gains in 4th are like 8 yds, 12yd, 8yds, 10yds..on and on. San Fran could barley stop KC. SF were so deep and worried about the pass they leave the flats/mids empty. Where is Bosa? I never see the guy on QB.

I wondered if the Niners forgot the OT rule change that gives both teams one possession even if the first team scores a TD.

Interesting point. I still think in this situation, it's advantageous to take the ball first. Because if the two teams are still tied after they each had one possession, then the team that took the ball first gets a second possession needing only a FG to win.

For that reason, I think the KC final drive was pretty much TD or bust. If they were in FG range with 4th and short, or even 4th and medium, I think they had to go for it. You can't give your opponent the ball if a FG beats you. Not with the range of today's kickers.

Similarly, if SF had gotten 7 on its initial possession, then I think KC would have needed 8.

You know the map is awarded for regular the regular season, right?

Are you sure the first OT isn’t played like the end of regulation so that if the team that needs to tie or take the lead doesn’t do either by 0:00 it’s over ?

100%
That's why KC wasn't calling TOs.
They would have just gone to 2nd OT to finish their drive.
I believe the 4th OT would have been treated like the "end of game".

Then they do another coin toss and start over with 5th OT like a new game starting.

1.0 did in OT @ Illinois in 2005, which proved to me then that we didn’t have a credible coach and instead had a low football IQ fraud, and he’s done nothing since then to change my mind; his philosphy still undermines winning.

Yes and Lamar had 24 TDs and 7 INTs passing - pretty average.
He was ranked 15th for NFL QB by ESPN (Mahomes was 8th)
I know Jackson also rushed for 850 and 5 TDs but in 2027 Daniel Jones rushed for 708 and 7TDs.
Plus if someone has seen a lot of playoff football the run heavy QBs rarely win titles.
Playoff defenses and DCs are too good to lose to a scrambler.

Dallas had a DB with 9 INTs and 5 TDs - epic
McCaffrey had 2000+ total yds and 21 TDs - got SF into the SB and scored.
All things being equal the QBs gets MVP the most but Lamar wasn't greater than Mahomes.
I never heard so much about a MVP the last month of season - felt like a fix was in

Interesting. I thought they took too much time as the time ran down but that wouldnt have mattered. Didn’t know
