Being 1st or 2nd in MVP voting virtually your entire career says what type of player you are for your generation.

Never said he wasn’t a great or HOF player.

But having zero interest in leaving a team “wasting away his career” while also resigning for 100m more than any other player also says something about the type of player you are.

Would Jordan have stayed in Chicago if the Bulls were constantly out of playoff contention by mid-season?

Trout is easily the best player in baseball. If you don’t know that, you should watch other teams besides the Yankees or Mets every now and again. It’s actually not close either.

MLB doesn’t make it very easy to watch other teams. That is a major reason why this generation’s Mickey Mantle is hardly a household name.

A major concern for baseball is the meager national profiles of its stars. By nearly any measure, pro football and pro basketball players outpace baseball players in national popularity.

According to YouGov’s ratings of active sports personalities, 91 percent of Americans have heard of LeBron James and 88 percent have heard of Tom Brady, but only 43 percent have heard of Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels, baseball’s best player.

You don’t have to look any further than the national reach of each league’s television broadcasts to see why this may be the case.

An analysis by The New York Times of television broadcasts by county shows how widespread the broadcasts of the N.F.L. and N.B.A. stars are — and how minimal they are for baseball’s stars like Trout.

Percentage of games aired by county in the 2018 season

100% of counties air at least a quarter of Brady’s games.

1% of counties air at least a quarter of Trout’s games.

98% of counties air at least a quarter of James’s games.

Few of Trout’s games are shown outside Southern California. For example, only six of his 162 games in 2018 were aired in Chicago. By contrast, 42 percent of LeBron James’s 82 games and 56 percent of Tom Brady’s 16 games were aired there.

Since even baseball’s best players rarely get airtime in markets outside their own, baseball struggles to promote its national stars on the same level as other sports do.

Over the past several seasons, baseball has tried to broaden the reach of its stars. But there may be no better solution than to find ways to let fans actually watch them play.

Maybe it’s a millennial thing?
Just put up your great individual stats and collect regular season MVPs but avoid any actual playoff baseball.

Wouldn’t the millennial thing actually be to all go to the same team to win, like the NBA. The way he is doing it is actually old school, stick with the team that drafted you and ride it out.

When NBA players did that they were told they didn’t care about winning and only about money. Now all of the sudden not carrying about winning is lauded.

You are certainly the expert for baseball history and mindset of an athlete.

How would you factor or weigh desire to win in ranking all-time great players?
Trout resigned with a team that has made the playoffs once in his 9 year career (3 playoff games).

Also - Banks and Williams was a very different landscape. They weren’t staying with losing teams and also signing for 433million (100m more than any other player).

This is a dumb take. I love that he has loyalty to his team and wants to play his career wearing the same uniform. It does not mean he does not want to WIN. It bothers me more when veterans leave their franchises to go chasing rings rather than do whatever they can to make those franchises the best they can be.

By your argument, you should be supportive of any college players using the transfer portal to leave RU in the future for a program with a better chance of winning the national championship or going to a Rose Bowl, or Eugene bailing on our hoops team when he is supposed to be a senior captain for a chance at making the NCAAs with Oregon next year.

I never understood why Trout signed that deal with LA. As soon as the season is over he is back in South Jersey and at every home Eagles game. The Angels can't seem to get their act together even having the two best players in baseball.
